SANTEE. Calif. (KGTV) - Two dogs have died after a fire broke out in an East County home.The fire broke out at a home on Big Rock Road and Rancho Fanita Drive just before 2 p.m. Wednesday. The fire started in the home's kitchen, according to Santee Fire Department crews.Neighbors said they first saw smoke and though the fire was in a large field behind the home, before realizing it was in a corner of the house.One neighbor reportedly ran over and called the home's owner, who was not home but told the neighbor her dogs were inside. The neighbor broke a window out and tried to get into the home to save the dogs but was pushed back because of the thick smoke.Santee Fire arrived and broke into the back of the home to put out the blaze. Crews found the dogs and performed CPR and gave them oxygen but they had already died.Crews said the neighbor was right not to enter the home if the smoke was as bad as described. The cause of the fire is under investigation.The owner of the home reportedly lives there with her daughter and son-in-law. 1073

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man has been taken into custody following a carjacking Friday afternoon in Santee, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.The incident started on the 9800 block of Mission Gorge Road around 1 p.m. when the suspect reportedly threatened to kill a 77-year-old woman and her family before hitting her, removing her from the car, and driving away with her purse and cell phone.Sheriff's deputies and La Mesa Police later found the suspect, Chris DiSalvo, 30, sitting in the stolen car on the 4600 block of Palm Drive in La Mesa. When he saw law enforcement, the department says he took off, crashing into a tree and running into a nearby apartment complex.DiSalvo was later found hiding in a stairwell and was arrested, the department says.According to authorities, DiSalvo admitted to taking drugs. He was given a dose of Naloxone and taken to the hospital.Upon his release from the medical facility, the department says he will be booked on several felony charges, including carjacking. 1035

(KGTV) - One of San Diego County's universities is among the safest campuses in the country, according to a new study.The North San Diego County college was named among the country's safest campuses by the National Council for Home Safety and Security, the school announced. Data used to rank schools is compiled using information by the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting and the Campus Safety Security Survey."Keeping our students safe is the University Police Department’s No. 1 priority," CSUSM Chief of Police Scott Ybarrondo said in a release. "There are enough stresses in college life, and worrying about your safety on campus should not be one of them. (KGTV and AP) — A former Camp Pendleton Marine was found guilty Wednesday of the murders of five women in Southern California more than two decades ago, including a San Diego woman in 1988.Orange County jurors convicted Andrew Urdiales of five counts of murder with enhancements for attacking a volunteer usher after a college piano concert and picking up four prostitutes, driving them to remote or deserted areas, having sex with them and killing them.The verdict raises to eight the number of women killed by the 53-year-old former Marine.Urdiales was previously convicted of killing three women in Illinois in 2002 and 2004. He was given a death sentence that was commuted to life without parole after Illinois barred the death penalty.He was extradited to California in 2011 to stand trial in the murders of five women in Riverside, Orange and San Diego counties between 1986 and 1995. Two years later, he picked up Julie McGhee, a 29-year-old prostitute, and drove her to a remote area, had sex with her, shot her in the head and left her body in the desert, authorities said.Urdiales went on to attack and kill three more Southern California women and three Illinois women who were working as prostitutes, authorities said.The California murders went unsolved for more than a decade until Urdiales was arrested after he returned home to Illinois.Authorities stopped Urdiales in 1996 and found a weapon in his truck that he wasn't allowed to carry, prosecutors said.
