(KGTV) - A brush fire erupted near homes in the Eastlake area of Chula Vista Tuesday, but no evacuations were ordered as crews doused the flames.The fire was reported shortly after 9 a.m. near the 400 block of Agua Vista Drive, according to Cal Fire officials.The blaze briefly burned vegetation several yards from some homes, but crews in the air and on the ground were able to stop the fire’s spread before it reached structures.After nearly two hours, crews contained the fire to 44 acres burned.10News learned the fire may have been accidentally caused by landscapers using equipment to clear out weeds. 635

(KGTV) — It’s a United States census year and so far, census numbers are not where they should be for San Diego, so Chula Vista leaders held a “week of action” to try to increase numbers.San Diego County has reported a 67.7% response rate compared to 68% in 2010. The goal is to surpass the 2010 numbers and hit 70% this year.Angelica Davis with the City of Chula Vista said they had planned many outreach events to connect with the community, but coronavirus has made that difficult, so they’ve had to find new ways to encourage people to fill out the census in a safe way.The final day of the week, residents could attend a drive-through event where the first 50 cars got whole pizzas and everyone was entered to win prizes and bikes. Anyone who came had access to translators, technology, and people who could answer questions.Davis said these resources are crucial in the Chula Vista community, especially with a push this year for 80% of participants to do the census online.“Not everybody has access to wireless or devices to be able to do it online,” she said.She also said many people in the Chula Vista community are worried about how their information will be used. Of the nine questions on the census, none of them ask about citizenship status and all responses remain private.“The information that gets obtained by the census cannot be taken by other reporting agencies, it’s all confidential,” said Davis.Davis said another problem is that people don’t realize what the census does, so they don’t bother to do it.”We’ve actually had people ask well what is the census, and I don’t think they make that connection that with that data, they determine where the funding is needed, where it needs to go,”The more people who live in a community, the more funding they’ll get, and that funding goes toward resources like rental assistance and food programs, which she said have all been needed the past few months with coronavirus.The U.S. Census Bureau is scheduled to start door knocks to encourage census participation in August. (KGTV) -- Sweetwater Unified School District officials said Thursday they are investigating an incident in which someone disrupted an online classroom by playing inappropriate audio.According to a district spokesperson, the incident happened Wednesday during a session taught by an Olympian High School teacher. The incident was reported by both a student and the teacher.Audio described as "sexual" in nature was played in the virtual classroom.District spokesperson Manny Rubio told 10News that the source of the audio is unlikely to be a hacker, and that a student or students cooperated in the disruption."Each course has an access code and we believe there are other students using those codes to enter and create disruptions," said Rubio. "Our IT staff is looking to identify the specific sources."It's unknown if the school or district requires students to use cameras to attend the online classroom.The district's 25 campuses matriculated over 40,000 students for online classes this school year, which started Monday. Students have been assigned equipment and software to access their virtual classes, including Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. Rubio said that since Monday, there have a few similar incidences of disruption but that a great majority of students are having positive experiences. (KGTV) - A nurse is calling her co-workers guardian angels after they saved her life.Early Borja is nurse a Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center and had quite a medical episode over the summer.Borja was in the car with her husband in July when she suffered what she thought was an asthma attack. It became more serious when she lost consciousness. Her husband drove her to the emergency room at Sharp Chula Vista, where a team of nurses, respiratory therapists and Dr. Nyda Pamintuan saved her life. Borja was revived and a few days later she was discharged from the hospital.On Thursday, she met the team that helped bring her back and also presented the doctor who led the effort with the Guardian Angel award.“I’m back alive working because of you,” said Borja through tears as she thanked the team.Borja has worked at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center for 27-years. 897

CIA director Gina Haspel found herself at the center of a political dispute Tuesday amid reports that the White House was blocking her from briefing Senators on the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.Illinois Democrat Sen.
