SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local couple is making a plea for the return of some family heirlooms after a burglary at their home while it was being fumigated.The mess Denise Duffy walked into is now stamped in her mind and heart."Very upsetting. I just felt very sick," said Duffy.Just off 54th street in Oak Park, after several days of termite treatment, Duffy and her husband met the fumigation crew Wednesday morning so they could get back in their home. Turns out, somebody else had been inside. The tent was sliced open, along with a screen window on the side of the house. The thief ransacked the entire house, stealing electronics and dozens of pieces of jewelry, most of them family heirlooms."My parents are dead. My grandparents are dead, and I had a piece of them," said Duffy.Among the pieces that priceless heirlooms was a gold necklace she wore at her wedding nearly 40 years ago, given to her by her grandfather. Also gone was her husband's gold wedding band."It's pretty tough on you ... brings back memories. Stuff you hope to have for your kids," he said.The Duffys aren't alone. Last week in El Cajon, there was a burglary with a similar M.O. A home - two days into a fumigation - was broken into after the tent was sliced open overnight. In that case, a senior couple lost jewelry, coins and other valuables collected during their lifetimes. The pain of their loss is shared by the Duffys. "Just a violation ... Can't replace any of it," said Denise.Her husband's wedding band engraved with their wedding date '11-28-80' and 'Love Never Fails.'It's unknown right now if there's a link between the two crimes. 1629

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego family is living in an empty home and says nearly everything they own is being held hostage by a moving company.They’re part of a growing group of people around the country who say they’re victims of a deceptive bait-and-switch operation. 10News has spoken to a representative of the moving company who denies wrongdoing.Over FaceTime, Brad and Vanessa Angle gave 10News a tour of their house in North Carolina. They recently moved there from their home in Poway. The family is sleeping on mattresses on the floor since their furniture and household items never arrived. The goal of relocating was to live a stress-free life, but the feeling of emptiness is driving them to tears.“It affects a lot it. It affects my daily life. I have to keep going, you know. I try to stand up every day for my kids. I have three kids that I have to be there for,” Vanessa said.What hurts the most is losing the memories. Her husband, Brad, says Titan Moving and Storage has the family’s irreplaceable belongings, like the photos and videos of their kids, and Vanessa’s wedding dress.On Titan Moving and Storage’s paperwork to the Angle family, it shows the company’s address is in Chantilly, Va.The Angles say the company had originally given them a binding estimate of ,300 with ,205 down. Yet after movers loaded everything up during the family’s moving day in July, the Angles say the movers claimed that the family had more items than what they were originally quoted for. The movers doubled the estimate.The Angles say the movers demanded a partial payment.“I think it was ,700-something dollars that we had to write a check for,” says Brad. He says his family was assured that any issues could be worked out with a company associate come Monday.Monday came and went. “[An associate] answered the phone on my first call and then immediately hung up and then wouldn't answer after that,” says Brad of his attempt to resolve the dispute with the company.The Angles stopped payment on the check and the situation went from bad to worse.The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, or FMCSA, is the government agency that oversees interstate moving trucks. The agency reports that the carrier has never been authorized to move household goods. The FMCSA is currently investigating the carrier.This year alone, the FMCSA reports there have been 98 complaints filed against the carrier. Complaints have come in from customers like Chris Baumann in Florida. He says the company pulled a bait-and-switch operation on him.“If I didn't have a headset on, you'd hear this house echoing. It's empty,” he said over video chat about not receiving his belongings from the moving company.He and others say they had checked reviews before hiring the company. Titan Moving and Storage only has one star on Yelp, but there are other companies listed on Yelp with similar names and better reviews, causing confusion for customers. The Angles recently got what they call "hostage” photos from the carrier. They were sent pictures of their items that are being held at an undisclosed storage facility in California. The company tells us it won’t release anything until receiving a storage payment from the family.“They're trying to charge us over a thousand dollars a month for storage which is insane,” says Brad.Titan Moving and Storage’s website has been down for several days. A manager with the company told us they're not taking new customers. He declined a taped interview but acknowledged that the company does not have a license to move household goods.He claimed it was due to a “filing issue” and said the company works with licensed third-party movers. The FMCSA tells 10News that the company is still not authorized to use third-party movers for household goods. The manager also told us that the company tried to resolve the matter with the Angles last month by offering them a reduced moving fee.The Angles call that a lie.“I see it as a crime. They don't have a license,” adds Vanessa.According to the FMCSA, the FMCSA does not have the authority to resolve claims against a moving company. State law enforcement, transportation and consumer affairs agencies are responsible for pursuing suspected incidents of moving fraud and regulating the operations of intrastate moves.According to the California Department of Consumer Affairs, moving companies that operate within California are required to be licensed by the Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair, Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation (BEARHFTI), part of the Department of Consumer Affairs.The BEARHFTI became the new licensing and regulatory home for household movers on July 1, 2018. The BEARHFTI is aware of the consumer complaints against Titan Moving and Storage but cannot comment specifically during the open investigation.A spokesperson tells 10News that the company is not licensed with the BEARHFTI.A sergeant with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department tells 10News that its detectives are looking into the matter. 5031

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Marine was killed in a hit-and-run accident in the Midway District just after 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night, according to San Diego Police.The victim, who was in his early 20's, was visiting an establishment with his friends earlier that night.At some point, his friends could not find him. Police said he walked or fell into the street in the 2700 block of Midway Drive.Police said a car hit him and took off toward Rosecrans Street. There was no description of the driver or vehicle available. Police were checking surveillance video and his phone to find out more information. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A San Diego fire captain convicted of domestic violence was sentenced Wednesday.Steven Michaels received three years probation, 52 weeks of counseling and 180 days of custody which will be served in a county parole and alternative custody program, according to City News Service.Michaels, a veteran fire captain with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, pleaded guilty in 2017 to shoving his girlfriend against a wall and refusing to let her use a phone to call for help, CNS reported.RELATED: Veteran San Diego fire captain pleads guilty to domestic violence chargeMichaels filed a request to have the felony charge reduced to a misdemeanor, but Judge Timothy Walsh denied the request citing a history of alcohol-related incidents of domestic violence.The felony conviction will likely cause Michaels to lose his job."He's taken away his career," said Walsh," if there is a career left. Four times!"When asked if Michaels was still employed by the department, Monica Munoz, a spokesperson for San Diego Fire-Rescue, only said, “we can’t give information about personnel issues.”10News has also requested comment from a spokesperson with SDFD's personnel department. Public records website, Transparent California, shows Michaels made 3,407 in 2016.The victim, Jane Doe, initially told investigators she feared for her safety, according to prosecutors. However, at the sentencing hearing she told the court she did not wish for Michaels to be convicted.Verna Tabor with the Center for Community Solutions says it is not uncommon for victims to blame themselves. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A researcher at the San Diego Museum of Natural History helped identify a new species of dinosaur, which was just added to the Anatomical Record.Dr. Ashley Poust made the discovery 10 years ago while on a research trip to China."There were a couple of features that immediately stood out to me, made me thing maybe we have something new here," he says.Dr. Poust says the shape of the skull and the presence of two long, decorative tail feathers made him think this was a new species."There's not any other dinosaurs that aren't birds, that we know of, who have long feathers like that," he says.Dr. Poust named the dinosaur "Wulong Bohaiensis." The word Wulong means "Dancing Dragon" in Chinese. The other part of the name comes from the area where it was found.A find like this helps fill in the gaps in how dinosaurs and birds evolved differently. Dr. Poust says Wulong was only about 1 year old when it died. That means it grew those long feathers much earlier than birds typically do. He thinks they could be functional, or it shows a major difference between dinosaurs and birds."You can't really answer those questions in California, but you can answer those questions in a place like China," says Dr. Poust.According to a release, the dinosaur was an early relative of the Velociraptor. It lived 120 million years ago and would have been about the size of a crow or raven.Dr. Poust says he's excited to share the new species with the world. The skeleton is on display at the Dalian Museum in China. It likely will not come to San Diego, as the specimen is too delicate for such a long journey. 1628
