Actress Lori Loughlin and her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, could end up in legal disputes with the University of Southern California, where their daughters were accepted as an alleged part of the sweeping college admissions scandal, court records show.Any civil action by or against the couple, however, is "completely speculative" at this point, an attorney for the couple wrote last month. His letter, filed Thursday into the court record, came in response to a request by federal prosecutors for a hearing on possible conflicts of interest among law firms involved in the high-profile case.Loughlin and Giannulli are among dozens of wealthy parents accused of using bribery to game the competitive college admissions process. Prosecutors say they paid 0,000 to a fake charity to get their two daughters into USC, falsely designating them as crew team recruits. Both have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Each charge is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.Loughlin and Giannulli are represented in the criminal case by the law firm Latham & Watkins, which represents USC in an unrelated matter, court documents show. Prosecutors cited the circumstances as possibly posing a conflict of interest in the future."USC has suggested that Latham's representation of Ms. Loughlin and Mr. Giannulli may conflict with USC's interests in possible future civil litigation with these individuals," attorney William Trach wrote."But any such future civil litigation is completely speculative, Latham is not proposing to represent Ms. Loughlin or Mr. Giannulli in any such civil litigation, USC has never articulated how Latham's representation of the defendants in this case would bear on any such civil litigation," he wrote. The letter also asserts that concerns that either party may seek to overturn a criminal conviction by claiming ineffective counsel is not realistic."Having carefully reviewed the applicable ethical rules and precedent in light of the substance and scope of our representations, our firm has concluded that there is no current or foreseeable conflict of interest, and that we have taken appropriate steps to avoid any such conflict of interest arising in the course of the case," Trach wrote. He also noted that both Loughlin and Giannulli have co-counsel who can represent them if they need to cross-examine a university employee.USC and other attorneys for Loughlin and Giannulli did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment. 2558

American Airlines now won't use its fleet of Boeing 737 Max planes any time this summer. The world's largest airline, which has 24 of the 737 Max jets in its fleet, said it is canceling about 115 flights a day through September 3 as a result of the grounding. It previously had canceled flights through August 19. The plane was grounded in mid-March after two fatal crashes, putting focus on a particular safety feature on the plane.American's canceled flights are the most extensive among US airlines. Southwest, which has 34 of the 737 Max jets in its fleet, has canceled flights only through August 5 at this time. United Airlines' cancellations also run into August. Not all of the American flights scheduled to be flown by the 737 Max will be canceled outright. Some will be flown with other aircraft. American is also canceling some flights scheduled to be flown by different aircraft, such as the original 737, to shift those resources to other flights.American said it is adjusting its schedules to affect the fewest number of passengers possible, and passengers whose flights are canceled will be able to rebook at no cost or get a full refund if they don't wish to take their trip. The 115 flights and 24 planes represent about 2% of American's overall operations. The airline operates about 6,800 flights a day during the busy summer travel season, including those flown for it by regional feeder airlines. Its mainline operations include a total of more than 900 aircraft.Late summer is one of the busiest times of the year for air travel, so the lost flights will hurt the airline — although Boeing is expecting to find ways to compensate airlines hurt by the Max grounding. It is seeking to win approval for a software fix that is designed to address the automatic safety feature that is the focus of the investigation into the two fatal crashes."American Airlines remains confident that impending software updates to the Boeing 737 MAX, along with the new training elements Boeing is developing ... will lead to recertification of the aircraft soon," American said in its statement. "We are pleased with the progress to date." 2150

A woman is in custody and a toddler is missing from Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, after the child's father said a rideshare driver abducted his daughter on Saturday evening, according to police documents and a news release.Paul Johnson said he was riding in a car with Lyft and Uber stickers with his daughter and a friend, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Allegheny County police.Johnson said that when he got out of the car and went to get his daughter out of the car seat, the driver drove away with the toddler, the complaint said. The complaint didn't identify the child, but a police news release said she is named Nalani.Johnson told detectives he tried calling the driver's cellphone multiple times but she never picked up, so he called 911 around 5 p.m. ET.Police arrested driver Sharena Nancy, 25, in the vehicle during a traffic stop around 7:30 p.m. ET, but did not find the child inside, the complaint said.According to the complaint, Nancy told detectives that Johnson sold the child to an individual for ,000 and asked her to complete the dropoff.Nancy said he showed her a photo of a black woman she was supposed to meet and asked her to drive the toddler "20 minutes" from a gas station in Monroeville along US Route 22 to meet the woman, the complaint says.Nancy said she was told the woman would then "flag" her down and Nancy was to turn over the toddler, the complaint says.Nancy told detectives she encountered a silver SUV with out-of-state plates parked on the side of the road and did as she had been instructed -- passing the toddler and the carseat over to a woman standing next to the car and then driving off. Nancy told police she also saw a second woman inside the SUV.Nancy said she then drove around, smoked cigarettes and talked on the phone with her husband, the complaint said.Nancy, who is being held without bail at the Allegheny County jail, was arraigned on Monday after being charged with kidnapping of a minor, interference with custody of children and concealment of whereabouts of a child. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 16.CNN was unable to identify or reach an attorney for Nancy.Nalani's grandmother, Taji Walsh, told 2210
