CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Chula Vista police officer shot and killed a man who stabbed him several times in the face Tuesday night.Two officers got a call from a resident on Melrose Ave. who said a man threw a piece of concrete the size of a baseball at his head abouut 9 p.m.The officers determined the man was at a home on Monterey Ave. and went to the address at 10:25 p.m., police said.A woman opened the home's front door to the two officers.  The man began assaulting the first officer, police said, and they scuffled.Police tell 10News the man stabbed the officer up to half a dozen times in the head and face. The officer fired several times in self-defense, police said.At least one shot hit the man, who died on his way to the hospital.  CVPD identified him as 27-year-old David Scott.The second officer and the department chaplain, who was on a ridealong, were able to assist the injured officer. He was taken to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. He did not require surgery and is expected to recover.City News Service contributed to this report. 1101

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A suspect police say led them on a chase in a car that was reported stolen has been arrested.Chula Vista Police say they received a report of a stolen Honda Civic Tuesday. After spotting the car around 3:02 p.m. Wednesday near I-5 and E Street, police tried to pull the driver over, but he led them on a chase through city streets, running several red lights in the process. The suspect then drove onto State Route 54. After the suspect began to drive east in the westbound lanes, police called off the chase.Shortly after police called off the chase, the suspect got out of the car and ran into the Villa Bonita apartment complex. The suspect was arrested after residents at the complex were able to point out which unit the the man went into.  808

(KGTV) – More than 300 South Bay parents and students attended a school safety forum Monday night.The Sweetwater Union High School District and Chula Vista police held the meeting at Chula Vista High School’s Performing Arts Center.“We certainly had some questions, we pinged our kids on what drills are being done on their campuses,” said Ricky Gallegos, who has two kids that attend high schools in the district.School officials and police assured parents that they practice and prepare for the unthinkable. But police were also candid about their limited resources. They have 10 school resource officers for 61 campuses and more than 51,000 students in Chula Vista.  Police asked parents for their help by reminding them to be involved with their kids and school community and to report whatever doesn't sound right. They also told them about the “P-3 Anonymous Tip App” which was launched within the past year. They said it there have been more than 400 tips made and law enforcement removed 13 guns from San Diego County Schools as a result of the app.“I think it’s petty cool, especially that it’s anonymous because I know some students are worried that they’ll talk to someone else,” Leira Gardea, a sophomore at Chula Vista High School said.Mental health was also a big topic of discussion. The Sweetwater Union High School District says they have 13 therapists and assured parents they do their best to disturbed or troubled youth the help they need.Chula Vista Police is holding another school safety forum next week. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- The South Bay community is mourning the sudden loss of a beloved Olympian High School teacher.Vanessa Sholty’s family said she suffered a stroke on Friday and passed away Sunday. She was only 39-years-old.Sholty’s sister, Rebecca Webb, spoke about her love for teaching dance and her love for children. “She’s been dancing for her whole life. She loves to dance and teach the kids to dance,” Webb said.Sholty taught dance and physical education at Olympian High School in Chula Vista. With distance learning and COVID-19 protocols, Sholty — like the other teachers — made adjustments.“She set up her whole living room like a dance studio,” Webb said.Sholty leaves behind her husband and two young children. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with costs.“We were not prepared for any of this,” Sholty said. “I walk into her house and I see all her school stuff still there because she had she was working that day… it's just some major shock for us all.”Webb said support from the community, including messages from students and fellow staff members, is helping them keep strong.“Her passing has deeply affected us all,” said a post on the Olympian High School Facebook page. “We have grief counselors available for anyone wishing to talk about this tragic event. These counselors will be available the remainder of the week and as needed in the future."“Hearing their stories of what a great teacher she was, it makes us proud of her to know… she cared so much about everybody around her,” Webb said. 1546

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A South Bay city is the latest the approve the sale of legal marijuana in San Diego County.An ordinance that will allow the sale of legal weed in Chula Vista was approved by city leaders Tuesday, after City Council twice delayed a vote on the issue.The ordinance allows for 12 commercial licenses (three in each of the city's four districts) and eight total storefronts (two per district). RELATED: Parents raise concerns over marijuana shop operating near children in Chula VistaPot shops will be required to be at least 150 feet from residential zones, 600 feet from youth centers or parks, and 1000 feet from churches, schools, or daycare centers. Business applicants must have a year of experience operating a legal marijuana business.The ordinance will also allow legal delivery services to operate in the city and for businesses that grow cannabis, though only in industrial areas of the city. Now, Chula Vista resident will be tasked with voting on a local cannabis tax. Tax dollars would pay for new changes, processes, and enforcement of marijuana in the city.If everything is approved, the measure would go into effect Jan. 1, 2019, a year after a voter-approved proposition legalized weed across California.Chula Vista leaders hope the new ordinance will help crack down on illegal pot shops operating within the city. 1421
