SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A hands-on workforce training program is helping people with disabilities land jobs.Hands On @ Hyatt provides two weeks of on-the-job training at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego. Students in the culinary training program get 100 hours of paid training, working with professional chefs.Kyle Lovell was a student in the program and ultimately landed a full-time job at the Hyatt as a cook."We're all here at the end of the day to work, to find a job, to make it on our own," said Lovell, "I hope everyone that has a disability knows they aren't alone."Lovell has a learning disability, but the program works with people ranging from physical disabilities to hearing impairment."I hope employers will see there are people out there with challenges that can work really hard and do a really good job," said Lovell.While unemployment hovers around 4 percent, it's twice as high for people with disabilities.The state-funded program is a partnership of Florida-based company Hands on Educational Services.Anyone interested in applying can learn more here. 1082

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego man is back in the U.S. after being held in a Mexican jail since Sunday. Rob Thomas, a Marine veteran and avid surfer, had been kept in custody after Mexican authorities determined he was at fault for a traffic collision that sent four people to the hospital, according to friends and local news outlet Rosarito en la Noticia.Under Mexican law, drivers found at fault in a collision can be detained until they prove they can cover the estimated costs of the crash. Thomas did not have valid car insurance in Mexico, so authorities demanded a cash bond, said longtime friend Mikey “Beats” Beltran. The amount of the bond was negotiated by an attorney representing Thomas, but it could be ,000 to ,000, friends said. “This is without a doubt a traveler’s worst nightmare, ending up in a foreign jail surrounded by people that don’t speak your language,” he said. “They don’t feed the people in detention, and so friends of ours that are down there, they’ve had to feed him daily.”Thomas was in Rosarito on a surf trip. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A portion of City Hall in Downtown San Diego was evacuated after crews working in the building possibly disturbed asbestos.According to the city, construction crews working on the lobby possibly disturbed the asbestos around 2 p.m. Thursday. The city said in a memo that a contractor working on the sprinkler system accidentally dislodged a section of the ceiling, causing it to crash to the ground. "Immediate action was taken to isolate and contain the material,'' according to the memo. The substance hasn’t yet been confirmed as asbestos, but hundreds of people were forced to evacuate as a precaution. Crews plan to conduct air testing Thursday night with the expectation of reopening City Hall Friday morning. According to caring.com, San Diego ranks 159th out of 302 cities nationally for best and worst cities for seniors. San Diego ranked high on the list when it comes to quality of life, ranking 94th out of the 302 cities. Some areas where San Diego ranked lower include healthcare,180th out of 302 and affordability, placing 194th out of 302. In California, San Diego ranked fairly low, coming in at 45th among 75 cities. The best cities in The Golden State for seniors are San Francisco, Woodland Hills, Santa Monica and Burlingame. Nationally, San Francisco also took the top spot, followed by Fredericksburg, Virginia, Washington D.C. and Boston Massachusetts. Caring.com rated the cities using data on healthcare, housing options, community engagement, transportation, quality of life and workforce development.
