SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Officials on Sunday released the names of the service members involved with a deadly amphibious assault vehicle training accident off the Southern California coast last week.A total of 16 service members were involved in the AAV accident on July 30, after the vehicle started taking on water while conducting shore-to-ship waterborne operations near San Clemente Island. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than a million California voters have signed up for a new statewide tool that can track a mail-in ballot through its journey from the post office to the mailbox to the final election tally, said California Secretary of State Alex Padilla.“Where’s My Ballot?” can send voters texts, emails or recorded voice calls updating them on their ballot’s status, including when the ballot has been mailed to a voter, when the elections office has received it, and when the ballot has been counted. Voters must sign up for the service.The system can also alert the voter if election officials have rejected their ballot due to a discrepancy, like if the ballot has been flagged for a missing or mismatched signature.“Vote-by-mail has been popular in California for many, many years. But with a further increase in vote-by-mail participation, the transparency and accountability of those mail-in ballots is even more paramount,” Secretary of State Alex Padilla said in an interview.Because of the pandemic, election officials are sending mail ballots to every active, registered voter in California for the first time in state history. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for additional victims after arresting a man they say tried to drag a 17-year-old girl to his car in North Park in late May. According to police, the attempted kidnapping happened around 7:15 a.m. on the corner of 30th Street and El Cajon Boulevard May 31. Police say Thomas Luis Salas, 38, approached the 17-year-old at a bus stop before making casual conversation. He then extended his hand for a handshake and, when the juvenile shook his hand, police say Salas tried to grab her arm and pull her toward his light blue 2011 Ford Escape. The 17-year-old fought back and was able to get away. Investigators were able to track down and identify Salas as the suspect in the case. He was arrested on attempted kidnapping charges. His bail is set at 0,000. Police are asking additional victims to come forward. Salas is a Hispanic man five feet, nine inches tall and weighs 220 pounds. He was unshaven with a goatee. Police say Salas’ eyes have a “sleepy” appearance. He also has a large tattoo on his right arm of a cartoon face inside a “sunburst” or “Flame” design. According to police, Salas may have approached other juvenile women with his phone out attempting to engage in conversation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Parents and students are concerned after someone found a bullet in a Point Loma High School restroom. The incident was reported on Monday and while students say there was a lack of communication from school staff, word traveled fast on campus. The school says police are now investigating. "We never heard anything over the intercom or anything," says senior Javan Hedrick. "In my 4th period class, it came up out of nowhere. Everyone was talking about some bullet found in the boys bathroom." Around noon, parents received an email sent from the school's principal, that says in part: "At Point Loma, our first priority is to provide a safe and secure learning environment for our students. As such, I wanted to make you aware of an incident that occurred this morning. School Police investigated a report of a bullet found on the floor of the boys restroom. After an investigation, it was determined there was no threat."Some parents pulled their kids out of class and aren't sure when they'll send them back. "I walked into the office, it was a crazy amount of kids trying to go home," says Hedrick. Students say they would have felt a little better if school staff talked to them about the incident. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Tuesday the North San Diego Business Chamber honored first responders who've gone above and beyond in their duties protecting the community. One of the recipients was San Diego Police Department K9 Officer Jonathan Wiese, honored for his actions during the active shooter incident at the Chabad of Poway synagogue.Wiese was on his way to meet his family for lunch when he heard the shots fired call and immediately responded to the area.Despite having little information and no back-up, Officer Wiese was able to track the suspect down who then surrendered. "Active shooter is right up there with 'officer down'; the calls don't get more intense than that, when you know someone is actively shooting there's going to be multiple victims, there's going to be a large scene, it's going to be chaotic," said Wiese. Officer Wiese says his 20 years of training kicked in."I tried not to think about the danger, just tried to figure out what I needed to do," said Wiese. "Every single day we have great stories like this, and so I want the public to know this is not unusual, this is our normal," said Chief Craig Carter with the Escondido Police Department.
