SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In the wake of this summer's protests over racial inequality, a high school athletic director from San Diego is trying to change a system he says doesn't have enough minority representation.Francis Parker AD Anthony Thomas started NOMAD, the National Organization of Minority Athletic Directors."We have to get comfortable being uncomfortable," says Thomas. "And we have to have difficult conversations within our community."Thomas began the organization with three other AD's from Oakland, Minneapolis, and Richmond, Virginia.They say NOMAD will guide and mentor minority coaches, athletes, and administrators who want to further their careers.Thomas says seeing the racial unrest in the wake of George Floyd's death was a turning point."I saw myself under that knee. I saw my student-athletes under that knee. I saw my nephew under that knee. So it was really a call to action," says Thomas.Thomas' school plays in the Coastal Conference. He noticed that only two of its 18 schools have black athletic directors. Thomas saw similar numbers across the state and country but couldn't find any specific data because no one had been tracking it yet on the high school level."You have to lead by example," says Thomas. "That's what we decided to do as Nomad is to get out ahead of it, and no longer wait, no longer be complicit."In its first five months, NOMAD has grown to more than 200 members. They've already held a handful of virtual webinars teaching people how to advance their careers in athletics. Thomas wants to make sure everyone has representation and opportunity."The data tells a story," says Thomas. "There's not a lot of opportunities for underrepresented people to become athletic directors, and we would like to see that change in the best way possible. And we want to facilitate hoping in that shift."Thomas thinks this can also help students by giving minority athletes people they can look up to who also look like them.He says NOMAD can also help guide conversations between players and coaches of different ethnic and racial groups that intersect in sports."This job is not about color. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In an exclusive interview with ABC10 News, a firefighter shared his heroic story of helping battle the massive fire that erupted aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard this past July.“It was a crazy situation,” said Deputy Fire Chief Robert Sepulveda with Navy Region Southwest Fire Emergency Services. “We [had] about 400-plus firefighters on-scene at the time,” he stated and added, “I was on the front lines with the firefighters and was directing the fire attack on the forward side of the ship at that time.”His first shift lasted for 30 hours. It took almost a week to knock it all down. “What I was feeling at that time was obviously fear and wanting to make sure that everyone was safe on-scene and make sure I had that command presence to be able to unify everybody,” he told ABC10 NewsHe has now received a civilian of the year award for his heroic actions.On Monday, Navy officials announced that the warship would be decommissioned after it was gutted this summer during the explosive fire at Naval Base San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — ICE served four subpoenas to the San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) Friday for information protected by sanctuary state policies regarding migrants arrested in San Diego.SDSO is required to protect the data under California's sanctuary state laws, which prohibits local law enforcement from cooperating with immigration detainers or requests for data concerning illegal immigrants."The public needs to be aware and concerned that California sanctuary state laws do not protect public safety and is bad public policy. Criminal aliens are being released back into the community daily and most will reoffend resulting in more victims, " said Gregory Archambeault, San Diego Field Office Director for ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in San Diego.RELATED: US border agents to pursue migrants in 'sanctuary' citiesICE says it rarely uses subpoenas for information because most law enforcement agencies comply with requests for data on illegal immigrants that have been arrested.California passed its sanctuary state policy in 2017, preventing local agencies from complying with ICE's request. Friday's subpoenas are the agency's first issued in California."The Sheriff’s Department has received the subpoenas from ICE and is in the process of reviewing them. If able to, the Department will comply with the lawful requests in a timely manner," a statement from SDSO read.ICE is seeking information to the following cases:A 40-year-old Mexican national who was arrested in December by San Diego Police for continuing sexual abuse of a child, lewd and lascivious act of a child under fourteen years old, and oral copulation with a person under fourteen years old. ICE says the individual has two DUI convictions from 2009, has been returned to Mexico on eleven occasions between 2009 and 2011, and is currently in SDSO custody.A 42-year-old Mexican national who was arrested for first degree robbery by SDPD in November 2019. ICE says he has a prior conviction for possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) from 2013 and he was granted a voluntarily departure, but failed to leave the U.S. ICE says he has since been released back into the community.A 31-year-old Mexican national who was arrested by SDPD for battery of spouse and false imprisonment in December 2019. ICE says he has a prior conviction for a deceptive government identification from 2008 and that he's been removed from the U. S. three times between 2008 and 2010. ICE says he has since been released back into the community.A 28-year-old Mexican national who was arrested for assault with force, great bodily injury, child cruelty and battery of spouse by SDPD in January 2020. ICE says he was previously arrested in 2017 for battery on spouse by local law enforcement and was returned to Mexico multiple times in 2004 and in 2018.
