CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A fire in a drainage tunnel had Chula Vista firefighters donning protective masks Thursday.The fire broke out about 4:30 Thursday afternoon at Eastlake Parkway and Otay Lakes Road, near the Vons and Lowe's shopping centers. It was quickly knocked down."Witnesses reported smoke billowing from a storm drain and several people running from the area," Chula Vista Fire IAFF local 2180 officials posted on twitter. "Please give our firefighters room while they work."The Chula Vista Fire Department said juveniles started the fire in the drain and left the area. No one was hurt.Officials are searching for two teens who may be involved in the incident.Firefighters are battling a tunnel fire off of Otay Lakes Road. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Sweetwater Unified School District officials said Thursday they are investigating an incident in which someone disrupted an online classroom by playing inappropriate audio.According to a district spokesperson, the incident happened Wednesday during a session taught by an Olympian High School teacher. The incident was reported by both a student and the teacher.Audio described as "sexual" in nature was played in the virtual classroom.District spokesperson Manny Rubio told 10News that the source of the audio is unlikely to be a hacker, and that a student or students cooperated in the disruption."Each course has an access code and we believe there are other students using those codes to enter and create disruptions," said Rubio. "Our IT staff is looking to identify the specific sources."It's unknown if the school or district requires students to use cameras to attend the online classroom.The district's 25 campuses matriculated over 40,000 students for online classes this school year, which started Monday. Students have been assigned equipment and software to access their virtual classes, including Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. Rubio said that since Monday, there have a few similar incidences of disruption but that a great majority of students are having positive experiences. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A Chula Vista company that sells health and wellness products received a letter from the Federal Trade Commission Friday warning company representatives to halt alleged claims that its products could treat or prevent COVID-19.Youngevity International Inc. was issued a letter stating that claims made on the company's website or through social media posts "unlawfully advertise that certain products treat or prevent" coronavirus.The FTC alleges one such claim made by Youngevity "business opportunity participants or representatives" includes a statement that with certain company products, "your body will be able to withstand and eliminate Covid-19 and the vaccines forthcoming for Covid-19."The agency also states that a link on the company's website marked "FlattenTheCurve Shop Immune Support" redirects users to the company's online store, where various "immune support" products are available for sale.Phone calls made to the company were transferred to Youngevity CEO Stephen Wallach, whose voicemail mailbox was full Friday afternoon.The FTC's letter states that it is unlawful to advertise that a product can prevent, treat or cure human disease without scientific evidence or studies substantiating such claims, of which there are none for COVID-19 in relation to Youngevity's products.The letter to Youngevity was one of six sent to companies across the country on Friday. The FTC also sent a batch of nearly 100 letters last month to various companies allegedly claiming their products and therapies could treat or prevent COVID-19, including four based in San Diego: ActiveHerb Technology Inc., Aspire Regenerative Health, EcoShield, LLC and Forever Ozone. 1699

CHULA VISTA (KGTV)-- It was back to school--virtually--for the Sweetwater Union High School District. They are the first school district in the county to start the year.Some parents said the one issue they ran into was technical problems. Gina Chavez, a mother of three and an elementary school teacher, said two of her three kids dealt with issues getting started. She said day one was "crazy."“My daughter started the day without an advisory class and no code for her science class,” Chavez said.Her other daughter couldn’t log onto her iPad, issued by the school district. “We had to scramble. I got my work computer, was able to log her on that way. [I] had to do a trouble ticket.”Two of her children have special needs and are on IEPs, individualized education programs. There still some question about how that will be handled in a remote environment.“I still haven’t heard anything as far as how they are going to specifically address his goals. I’m still waiting and if I don’t hear by the end of the week, I will be reaching out to figure that out,” Chavez said.A district spokesperson said roughly 9,400 devices were distributed last week. The majority of students were able to hold on to their devices from last year.Regarding technical problems, spokesperson Manny Rubio acknowledged the issues, but said the “issues are being resolve fairly quickly.”“It seems as though the great majority of students were logged in and had access to their classes,” Rubio wrote in an email to ABC 10News. “We do have our IT staff as well as school site staff available to answer questions and resolve issues.”Under the distance learning model, students are block schedules with three classes per day. There will be 30 to 45 minutes of virtual face time with the student’s teacher. The remaining time will be independent study, according to the plan released by the district.“I feel like I was torn in three different directions this morning trying to help every child get where they needed to be,” Chavez said. “If I had work today… I think I would have been in tears.”Chavez said she hopes the glitches get resolved by the end of the week.The Sweetwater Union High School District is facing many challenges, including a roughly million budget shortfall.An audit of the district conducted by the independent state agency Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) showed there was enough evidence that fraud or misappropriation of funds may have occurred within the district. 2491

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The City of Chula Vista is highlighting local businesses that are adapting to serving customers outdoors because of the pandemic. City officials started posting pictures on the city's Facebook and Instagram pages on Monday. Since Monday, they've highlighted barber shops, art galleries, restaurants and yoga studios. The city is calling them ABC, or Accommodating Business Champions. The plan is to feature a different business every day. Itaglo Pasta Bar was one of the businesses featured. Owner and Chef Alejandro Vicens says he was happy to see his business featured by the city. Like so many businesses, Vicens has moved everything outdoors to be able to continue to operate. The city says it plans to continue highlighting business that are moving outdoors. City staff also tells 10News they've been going around the city taking pictures of those that are doing things properly to serve their customers. On Sundays during the month of August, Chula Vista also approved for a portion of Third Avenue to be closed to traffic, so businesses can expand onto the street. 1111
