TRABUCO CANYON, Calif. – A large brush fire burning in the Cleveland National Forest’s Trabuco Canyon is spreading quickly Monday afternoon. The fire, dubbed the Holy Fire, was reported around 1:30 p.m. near Holy Jim Canyon and Trabuco Creek roads, according to KABC.The Orange County Fire Authority said the blaze grew quickly from between seven and 10 acres to at least 700.The fire also destroyed at least one structure and is threatening several communication towers at the top of a nearby hill.The fire is currently burning away from Orange County and those living in the community of Holy Jim were asked to evacuate out of precaution. Cal Fire is assisting in fighting the blaze. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. 765

There's a new push to acknowledge the greater impact of racism on health.Three Democratic lawmakers created the Anti-Racism and Public Health Act, which would create two new programs within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).One is a National Center for Anti-Racism to research health disparities and develop policies to close the divide. The other is a new program within the CDC’s Center for Injury Prevention and Control that would be focused on preventing law enforcement violence.The bill also calls on the federal government to declare racism a public health crisis. Meanwhile, many state and local governments have already done that.The American Public Health Association says federal action would identify racism as an issue of national importance.“I think the goal is to get us to take our heads of the sand and not be afraid to call racism for what it is,” said Dr. Georges Benjamin, Executive Director at the American Public Health Association.Benjamin says the pandemic has shown the extent of racism as a health issue, pointing to matters that prevent people of color from getting tested and the apprehension Black men face when it comes to putting on a mask, because it can be seen as threatening.He says the stress can raise blood pressure and cause health issues.“If you actually go in and understand their life experiences, they have higher degrees of stress,” said Benjamin. “Stress, it changes a whole range of bodily hormones that have negative impacts on the body.”The American Public Health Association declared systemic racism a public health crisis in June, shortly after George Floyd’s death.A U.S. Senate version of the bill has been referred to committee. 1708

TIJUANA, Mexico. (KGTV and AP) -- At least three people were killed in wind-driven fires that scorched a large swath of Baja, California last week, the Associated Press reports. Last Friday, Mexico’s civil defense told AP the fires forced more than 1,600 people to evacuate their homes. The fires burned near Tecate, Tijuana and between the coastal towns of Rosarito and Ensenada. The fire near Tecate burned more than 35,000 acres, according to AP. Schools were also shut down in Tijuana, Tecate and Rosarito due to heavy smoke in the area. Mexican officials told CNN the fire tore through 125 homes, 30 of which are in the city of Tijuana. Anna Gloria Rodriguez showed a growing pile of donations in her office Wednesday. “Furniture, some blankets and pillows,” Rodriguez said. Rodriguez is part of the Kumeyaay Nation and is heading up the effort to collect donations to bring to her family across the border. “The Kumeyaay Nation has people on both sides of the border. We have family in all the communities,” she continued. “The whole big mountains already burned but still one part on fire, so there was a lot of people in the community trying to put dirt and water.”While her family and many others are safe, the fires left some without electricity or easy access to clean water or food.
