Relatively small shares of adults say they hardly ever (9%) or never (7%) wore a mask in the past month, and 4% say they have not gone to these types of places."Reporter Adam Racusin spoke with two doctors in different parts of California to get their take on masks."The primary purpose of wearing a face covering is to protect other people in case you're one of the probably significant number of people who are shedding the virus and not have symptoms," said Dr. Dean Winslow, a professor of medicine at the Stanford University Medical Center.Winslow said the risk of coming into contact with the virus is higher when in indoor settings.RELATED: Some San Diegans push for end of San Diego County face mask requirement"Historically, the major outbreaks we've seen we know where the point source is, and have almost always been indoors," he said."Eventually, the people around us, how healthy they are, is going to come back to haunt us," said Dr. Jyotu Sandhu, Family Medicine, Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group. "So there's some people who really appreciate the mask and recognize that their social responsibility dictates, they really care about other people, they want to make sure that if inadvertently they are infected they don't want to pass it on to anyone, gosh they would feel terrible about that. Then you have folks on the other end who just don't want their freedom curtailed in any way. They don't want to be told what to do, and to cover their face feels very personal. And then you have folks everywhere in between in that spectrum. He donned a mask and black-and-white tights and had a knack for performing seamless moves.In early September, the man known for his strength felt tired and then developed a cough and fever. A few weeks later, he was having trouble breathing and was taken to the ER."He went in with pneumonia and was then diagnosed with COVID-19," said his daughter Barbara Rodriguez.Barbara says a few days later, he was placed on a ventilator. About three weeks later, Martin, a husband and father of two, died at the age of 53."He gave me strength, gave me guidance, and helped me become the person I am today. Knowing I won't have him for the future is painful," said Barbara.The man she knew as her loving, caring father stood in contrast to the character inside the ring. After several years in Mexico's famed AAA Lucha Libre in the early 90s, Rodriguez moved to San Diego and became a freelancer, wrestling in leagues in Southern California, Canada, and Mexico. He was always the bad guy and he loved it."Hyped him up even more. He loved entertaining people, making them laugh and feeling emotion," said Barbara.Since the pandemic began, his matches had been canceled. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s something that has never happened before and could have long-lasting political impacts.Experts are projecting California will lose at least one congressional seat, and possibly two, once the 2020 Census numbers are finalized. The Census officially ended last week.If the outside projections are correct, it would be the first time ever that California’s political voice will shrink, and San Diego County is one of the most likely regions to have its representation diminish, according to Douglas Johnson, a researcher at the Rose Institute at Claremont McKenna College.Fewer House seats will affect all Californians, Johnson said, when big issues go before Congress.“That would mean we have two less votes in D.C. when there are votes on which state should get transportation dollars or what should be water policy or anything like that,” Johnson said.It also means California could drop from 55 votes to 53 in the Electoral College, giving the Golden State less influence in future presidential elections.When the squiggly congressional maps get redrawn, Johnson says it’s easy to predict which region will lose the first House seat: eastern Los Angeles County.“We can see that area is way short of the population for where it should be to justify the number of seats it has,” he said.Predicting the second seat on the hypothetical chopping block is trickier, he said.It could get carved out of the agriculture-rich Central Valley. But Johnson thinks the more likely scenario is that a seat in Northern San Diego County could be absorbed, in an area covering Solana Beach, Vista, Carlsbad, Oceanside and into southern Orange County.“The district in the middle is the 49th, and so it's the most likely to get squeezed,” he said.Ultimately, it will be up to the California Citizens Redistricting Commission to redraw the lines, a group created in 2010.They come up with crazy shapes because each district must have an equal population -- within one person -- based on interpretation from the Supreme Court. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's already been one year since the San Diego Zoo Safari Park saw the first southern white rhino born through artificial insemination arrive at its park.Edward turned one-year-old on July 28, celebrating with a party at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center with his mother Victoria, 8-month-old female calf Future, and her mother Amani."Even though he doesn’t know it’s his birthday, it is very special to see Edward – a healthy, robust rhino - running around, enjoying his special treats," said Barbara Durrant, director of Reproductive Sciences at San Diego Zoo Global. "We aren’t just celebrating his birthday but also are celebrating the significance of his birth."Edward was born last year after hormone-induced ovulation and artificial insemination with frozen semen from southern white rhino Maoto on March 22, 2018. Victoria gave birth 16 months later. Edward's birth was the zoo's first successful attempt to birth a southern white rhino via artificial insemination and a critical step toward recovering its distant cousin, the northern white rhino. Currently, only two northern white rhinos exist in the world and both are female.Researchers believe that a northern white rhino calf could be born from artificial insemination within 10 to 20 years. 1313
