SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State's scheduled football game Friday at Fresno State was canceled Sunday due to COVID-19 contact tracing within the Bulldogs' program.The Mountain West Conference is declaring the game a no contest, and has no plans to reschedule it, conference officials said Sunday.The Aztecs (3-2), who were coming off a 26-21 loss at undefeated Nevada on Saturday, will now hold onto the Old Oil Can trophy for another year after beating Fresno State, 17-7, last season in San Diego.The Bulldogs (3-1) had their planned game Saturday against San Jose State canceled on Friday, also due to COVID-19 contact tracing within the Bulldogs program."We are disappointed about the game on Friday being canceled due to COVID issues but the health and safety of our student-athletes is most important," SDSU athletic director John David Wicker said. "We will actively search for a game this weekend because our coaches, student-athletes and staff want to play."We have reached out to the conference office and the Pac-12 that we are actively looking for a game. We will have to see how testing goes this week for all of the schools in our conference and the Pac-12."Fresno State athletic director Terry Tumey said "in partnership with Mountain West Conference leadership and the leadership at San Diego State, we explored every alternative solution we could identify in order to play the game on its scheduled weekend. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Registrar of Voters has received more than 560,000 ballots, it was announced Wednesday, more than three times the amount received at this point before the 2016 election.With less than two weeks remaining before the Nov. 3 election, the ballots are in the process of being put through a sorting machine that captures images of voters' signatures for comparison to ones the registrar has on file.Mail-in ballots were sent to all 1.9 million registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even to those who had not requested one. Nearly a quarter of those have already been processed."Within minutes after the polls close at 8 p.m. on election night, the results for those early returns that were mailed in or deposited at drop- off locations before election day are counted," the registrar's office tweeted.For those who prefer to vote in person, the Registrar of Voters office in Kearny Mesa is open for early voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Voters also have the option to drop off their ballot at one of 126 drop-off locations around the county -- including dozens of libraries, YMCAs, county offices and The Old Globe Theater in Balboa Park.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person San Diego-area polling places will be open for four days instead of one, Registrar Michael Vu said.Vu has announced that his office is working with county public health services to ensure the health and safety of election workers and voters. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council rejected an emergency ordinance Tuesday that would have banned motorized scooters on boardwalks in Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, Mission Bay and La Jolla.  State law already bans motorized scooters from sidewalks but doesn't mention boardwalks.   The vehicles have become increasingly common in San Diego since they were introduced in February by scooter-sharing companies Bird and LimeBike. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister reminded local property owners today to pay property taxes on time or face a hefty penalty. The first installment of the 2018-2019 secured property tax bill was due on Nov. 1 and will become delinquent after Dec. 10. ``So far, we have had 41 percent of taxpayers send us .3 billion in first installment payments,'' McAllister said. ``But we're coming up on the deadline, and we don't want anyone to have to pay a 10 percent penalty for being even a minute late.'' Online payments will be accepted until midnight on Dec. 10. Taxpayers should log on to sdtcc.com early and give themselves plenty of time to complete an e-check payment before the automatic midnight cutoff, according to McAllister. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Legion Major League Rugby team announced Tuesday that it released recently signed player Steffon Armitage in the wake of his conviction for sexually assaulting a woman in France.On Monday, a French court found Armitage guilty of groping a woman's breasts outside a bar last year in the town of Pau, where he was playing at the time of the assault. Armitage, 34, admitted he had also been drinking heavily that night.The court handed Armitage a suspended prison sentence and ordered him to compensate the victim with 5,000 euros, roughly ,500 in U.S. dollars.The Legion signed Armitage in July. Earlier in the decade, Armitage won three European Rugby Champions Cup titles with France's FC Toulannais and was named the European Rugby Cup's 2013-2014 player of the year.He had been expected to join the team at the beginning of pre-season training in December."Armitage's conduct does not reflect the values of the Legion and therefore, the team is going to go in a different direction for the 2020 season," the team said in a statement released Tuesday.The Legion launched with Major League Rugby in 2018 as one of the league's seven founding teams.
