DENVER, Colorado — Tom Sullivan, whose son Alex died in a mass shooting inside a Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colorado in 2012, unseated Republican incumbent Cole Wist to win the state House seat for District 37.As of early Wednesday morning, Sullivan had 53 percent of the votes with 95 percent of results reported.Sullivan, a veteran, is a proponent of gun control. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV)- After the recent horse deaths at the Del Mar Racetrack, a small group of animal activists is proposing a ban on horse racing. Local supporters of the track are saying "no." Animal rights activists were set to speak at the California Horse Racing Board meeting Thursday morning when things got heated between both sides before the session started. "We are trying to initiate a ban on horse racing, not just in California but in this country," says animal rights activist Ellen Ericksen. Ericksen says she's concerned about the safety of the animals who spend most of their time racing. "Horses are dying left and right."Supporters of the horse racing industry say the animals are being taken care of. "We take every precaution we can with these horses because we love them," says Jockey Aaron Gryder. Gryder has been a jockey at the Del Mar Racetrack for the past 32 years. "It's not our job; it's our passion."This past summer, the Del Mar Racetrack implemented new protocols to ensure horse safety, like having veterinarians on the track during every workout. "We want to make sure when the horses step out on the racetrack they are 100% in great condition," says Gryder.Supporters also say doing away with horse racing could leave a lot of people without a job. "They have plenty of time to start looking for other employment," says Ericksen. "They have plenty of time to get re-trained."A statement sent to 10News from the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club says: "Del Mar has implemented an unprecedented series of safety and welfare measures over the last several years and, while we always will strive to do better, these reforms are working. (KGTV) - All eyes were on Del Mar's bluffs near the train tracks during Wednesday's storm.Watching the cliffs near Seagrove Park, 10News spotted dirt trickling down the cliffs each time a a train passed by, raising concern after a large bluff collapse Friday.Another area was deemed precarious by the North County Transit District (NCTD) less than a block away from last weekend's collapse.Transit workers told 10News everything was going to plan Wednesday, referencing sand bags keeping debris out of storm drains, funneling water away from the fragile sandstone cliffs.RELATED: Travel nightmare for train passengers after Del Mar bluff collapseAn NCTD official said the agency has personnel monitoring the bluffs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until further notice."At this time, the tracks are safe and trains are permitted to travel through the area at restricted speeds," said an NCTD spokesperson.SANDAG and North County Transit District completed a million project last fall to shore up the bluffs. 1031
