LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The mother of a crash victim is pleading for the driver of the car to come forward.Monica Cloyd said her son, Michael Gutierrez, was severely injured Saturday morning on Wildcat Canyon Road near the Barona Casino when the driver of the car he was in crashed into a pole.She says the car belonged to her son, a 23-year-old ironworker, but said he had been drinking so he gave his keys to his friend.RELATED: Prosecutors: Ramona driver tried to hide evidence of hit-and-run crashEarlier in the night, she said they had been at a party in La Jolla but her son’s friend ended up driving them to Barona instead of going home.They made it to the casino, but on the way back, the car crashed along Wildcat Canyon Road.Cloyd said a 16-year-old girl was also in the car and was seriously injured.RELATED: Hit-and-run victim placed on life support days before his wedding dayThe man who was driving ran from the scene, according to Cloyd. She said authorities have not been able to locate him. (KGTV) - A new group formed on social media in response to the destruction of looters and arsonists after Saturday's peaceful protest against injustice.La Mesa Civil Defense is a Facebook group formed Monday by Attorney Scott McMillan. McMIllan was devastated by the chaos Saturday night, "we lost our museum, we lost our art gallery, we lost two of our banks... I did not want to see it [La Mesa] burn to the ground."McMillan said the goal of the page is to communicate how they will protect the town should anything happen in the future, "La Mesa Civil Defense is going to stand in front of the buildings with fire extinguishers and garden hoses and their presence."He said he stood at Nebo Dr. and Lemon Ave. from 7:30 p.m. Saturday night until 6 a.m. guarding local businesses and trying to get looters to stop causing destruction.He said a few people spoke with him.One man explained he was upset about George Floyd's death, McMiIllan said he responded saying, "how does breaking (a neighboring boutique that's been around for 10 years) her windows and stealing her merchandise, honor the memory of George Floyd?"He said the man left and came back to tell McMillan he was right.Those are the conversations he hopes blossom from this group and bring peace to La Mesa.McMillan said he is not asking anyone to use lethal force unless they feel like their life is being threatened.He said they are stepping in to help police and firefighters overwhelmed during these times. 10News reached out to La Mesa PD for a comment and have not heard back. 1571

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A hospital parking lot isn’t the typical place for a family reunion, but after 69 days in the hospital, it was the perfect place for the Rael family to gather to celebrate the fact that Wanda Vigil is now going home.Wanda spend 69 days at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood battling COVID-19 — 42 of them on a ventilator.“She’s a fighter. We were told 20 days in she probably wasn’t going to make it,” brother Alan Rael said.Alan and about two dozen family members gathered in the parking lot of St. Anthony’s on Thursday as Wanda was discharged from the hospital.“It’s a beautiful thing. It’s miraculous,” sister Linda Deborah Sanchez said.Hospital workers lined the lobby in a socially distanced fashion to clap and cheer as Wanda was wheeled out. Her family was waiting outside with signs and hugs.“I am so grateful,” Wanda said.She still has a damaged vocal cord, meaning she can only whisper, and her family acknowledged that she had plenty of recovery still to go.“She still has a journey ahead of her, but she’s alive,” Sanchez said.“My heart is so happy. I’m so happy. My family has been there through thick and thin,” Wanda said.Multiple members of the Rael family were diagnosed with COVID-19, and all recovered. They wanted to send the message that though this day was a happy one, and the vaccine is now being distributed, there are still many people in the hospital fighting the virus.“It’s a serious thing.
