CHONGQING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Rain-triggered landslides in southwest China Monday blocked a river, creating a barrier lake in Chongqing Municipality and forcing the evacuation of more than 12,000 people, flood control authorities said.The landslide blocked the Luojiang River in Chengkou County early Monday, creating a dam holding 15 to 20 million cubic meters of water, said Xing Hua, a Chengkou Water Resources Bureau spokesman.As of 5 a.m. Monday, the barrier lake was five-square-kilometers in area and 18-meters deep, said Xing.Photo taken on July 19, 2010 shows the Ciqikou Town surrounded by flood water of the Jialingjiang River, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality. BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The number of criminal explosion cases as well as gun crimes in China dropped by 13.4 and 33.1 percent year on year, respectively, in the first five months of 2010, Ministry of Public Security said in a statement Monday.The statement, however, did not provide exact numbers.Police nationwide seized over 351 tonnes of explosives, 1.7 million detonators, 15,000 guns, 1.84 million bullets, 300,000 imitation guns and 170,000 illegal knives since the launching of a national crackdown on illegal explosive and guns, the statement said.The widespread publicity about the police crackdown apparently paid off with 3,099 tips received from the public which led to the solving of 1,538 cases and the arrest of 2,065 suspects, said the statement.Those who provided information to police were rewarded with 960,000 yuan (about 141,000 U.S. dollars) in total, it said.

BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Experts from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan Sunday started their third round of talks in Beijing to pave the way for a long-awaited pact to boost cross-Strait economic ties.During the talks, the two sides will discuss the main content of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), and goods and services trade in the "early harvest program."The ECFA is intended to normalize mainland-Taiwan economic ties and bring the two economies closer.The first round of talks took place in January in Beijing, and the second two months later in Taipei.Fan Liqing, spokeswoman of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, told a press conference Saturday that negotiations had made pronounced progress and were approaching completion.Yang Yi, another spokesman of the same organization, was reported as saying in March that the two sides should work together to complete the pact in June.Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), said on April 2 the SEF also hoped to see the signing of the ECFA by the end of June.

HONG KONG, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- A chartered plane, carrying the bodies of the eight victims, victims' relatives and survivors in the hostage crisis in Philippine capital Manila, arrived at the Hong Kong International Airport on Wednesday evening.Following the arrival, an around-90-minute condolence ceremony was held at the airport, with a senior Hong Kong official and the victims' relatives laying wreaths on the coffins.In a speech after the ceremony, Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong government Henry Tang urged the Philippine government to provide a detailed account of the causes of death and injury.COMING HOMEThe chartered plane of Cathay Pacific flight number CX 2903, which carried the coffins bearing the bodies of the victims, victims' relatives, several survivors and their kins, arrived in Hong Kong at 7:50 p.m. local time (1150 GMT).The chartered flight took off around 6:19 p.m. local time in Manila after a brief farewell ceremony.The eight slain Hong Kongers and the survivors were among the 21 Hong Kong tourists who were caught in a 11-hour hostage crisis in Manila on Monday.
