A joint statement released by federal and state officials on Thursday described last week’s presidential election as the “most secure in American history” despite calls from President Donald Trump’s campaign that the election was “stolen.”The letter was signed by leaders of the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission and the National Association of State Election Directors, among others. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency was established two years ago as a branch of Homeland Security during the Trump administration.In bold, the authors of the statement wrote, “There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised.” This statement matches those from secretaries of state and boards of election throughout the US.“The November 3rd election was the most secure in American history,” the statement reads. “Right now, across the country, election officials are reviewing and double checking the entire election process prior to finalizing the result.”The group says that claims of election fraud are “unfounded.”“While we know there are many unfounded claims and opportunities for misinformation about the process of our elections, we can assure you we have the utmost confidence in the security and integrity of our elections, and you should too,” the statement read. “When you have questions, turn to elections officials as trusted voices as they administer elections.”Earlier this week, CNN among other outlets, reported that the Department of Justice, under Attorney General Bill Barr’s direction, was launching an investigation into voting irregularities. Regardless of where they're taking place, teachers are still spending money on supplies.According to a survey by AdoptAClassroom.org, many teachers have spent about a third of their school supply expenses on distance learning materials.“They're actually spending more,” said Ann Pifer, Executive Director at AdoptAClassroom. “70% of the teachers we surveyed said that they have delivered supplies to students' homes, either by bringing them personally or by mailing assignments with supplies.”Nearly every three out of four teachers have spent money on printers, ink and paper to make work packets for students who may not have access to computers and internet.Nearly half have spent money on postage and mailing supplies, so they can send learning materials to students.Even in schools where classes are being held in person, AdoptAClassroom still expects teachers to spend more money on supplies.“In a normal elementary classroom, there's a basket of pens and papers and crayons and scissors on a table,” said Pifer. “And groups of students share those supplies to do projects. A Brownsville, Texas man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after stealing and reselling .2 million in fajitas from a juvenile detention center over the span of nine years.Gilberto Escamilla had previously pleaded guilty to felony theft charges.Escamilla was caught last summer after he took a day off work from the Darrel B. Hester Juvenile Detention Center for a doctor's appointment. A driver called the kitchen at the juvenile center saying they had 800 pounds of fajitas to drop off.The center did not serve fajitas, but the driver said he had been delivering the meat to the center for nine years.After the driver spilled the beans, investigators found packages of fajitas in Escamilla's fridge where he reportedly sold the meat to separate buyers.Escamilla was fired from his job in August.The-CNN-Wire 865

A man is hospitalized, but expected to survive, after his girlfriend struck him with her car following a domestic argument, according to police in Port St. Lucie, Florida.The incident happened in the 1900 block of W. Dunbrooke Circle.Police said the man got out of the car and began walking down the street and the woman then dropped off her baby at their house, drove back to where the man was walking and hit him.Video posted by police shows crime scene tape around a car which appears to have a big dent in the hood and a shattered windshield.The man, described as the woman's 24-year-old live-in boyfriend, was airlifted to a hospital with head trauma.  He was undergoing surgery late Wednesday afternoon.Police did not identify either person but said the investigation continues. “It sounded like a car hitting a shopping cart," said Lance Chmura who lives just across the street from the crash scene. He was making breakfast around 9 a.m. when he heard the impact and ran out to help.“I went down, grabbed his hand and stabilized him because he was starting to thrash around a bit," said Chmura.The impact of the crash was so intense it sent the man flying 35 yards down the street.“She (the girlfriend) then left the scene, drove back home.  Her relative got in car and came back to the scene," said Master Sgt. Frank Sabol with Port St. Lucie Police.The victim’s grandmother would not reveal what the girlfriend said to her immediately after the crash, but said the couple had a good relationship and had just moved down here last month. She said she thinks this was an accident.“I think they were just playing around and didn’t realize the severity of it," said the grandmother.“The initial investigation determines she was on the wrong side of the road when he was struck," added Sgt. Sabol.Right now, it’s being investigated as a case of domestic violence. No arrests have been made.  1948
