ENSHI, HUBEI, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's most difficult mountain railway was linked up in Enshi Prefecture, central China's Hubei Province, and is expected to open within the year, according to officials at the railway's construction headquarters Wednesday.The Yichang-Yiwan Railway, totalling 377 km in length, runs from the Yiwan District in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality to Yichang City of Hubei Province.It was designed to greatly shorten the journey between the mountainous regions in the southwest and the eastern parts of China, according to Zhang Mei, head of the engineering administration center of the Ministry of Railway.The railway trip from Chongqing to Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, for example, will take only five hours once the link is open to rail traffic, instead of the previous 22 hours, said Zhang.The railway was first laid out in 1903 by Sun Yat-sen, founder of the Kuomintang party, over 100 years ago.The reason the construction had not begun till 2003 is that the railway must travel one of the most mountainous regions in China's southwest, whose difficult terrain made the construction work the most difficult in China's railway history, said Zhang."Beneath the luxuriant mountains we encountered myriad natural barriers, such as underground rivers, limestone caves, and coal seams," said Zhang.To link the line, workers had to build 253 bridges and dig 159 tunnels, which account for 74 percent of the total railway length, winning the railway the title of the "tunnel and bridge museum."Starting in late 2003, it took seven years for the construction to be completed, said Zhao Hui, project manager of China Tiesiju Civil Engineering Group, which undertook the construction."I joined the project at the age of 25, and now I'm 32. BEIJING, Aug.1 (Xinhua) -- China's General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) has voiced its support for journalists' rights of supervision after police in an east China county wrongly issued an arrest warrant for a journalist."News organizations have the right to know, interview, cover, criticize and monitor events regarding national and public interests. Journalistic activities by news organizations and their reporters are protected by law," read a statement posted on the GAPP's website.The statement came after police of Suichang County in Zhejiang Province canceled a warrant for Qiu Ziming, a reporter of the Economic Observer News, who was accused of defamation by a publicly-listed company.Qiu had previously been wanted by the police of Suichang after Zhejiang Kan Specialty Material Co., Ltd. (Kan) accused him of defaming the company with fabricated stories.However, police of Lishui City, which administers Suichang, ordered the county's public security bureau to cancel the warrant for Qiu after a review found the warrant failed to meet statutory requirements.Police officials said earlier Friday that the investigation into allegations of defamation against Qiu and his newspaper would continue.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Amid sirens and blaring horns, people across China Sunday stood in tribute to victims of a massive mudslide in a remote northwest town.Chinese leaders, students, workers and members of the public paused for three minutes from 10 a.m. Sunday, a week after the devastating mudslide hit Zhouqu County, in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu Province.At least 1,248 people have died and 496 are listed as missing.Chinese President Hu Jintao, top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao and other top Chinese leaders stood and paid silent tribute to the victims at the beginning of a meeting by the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee held in Beijing on Sunday morning.DEEP GRIEFAt the Dongjie Village in Zhouqu, more than 5,000 rescuers and villagers stood still on the debris of mudslide, bowing their heads in commemoration of those killed in the disaster.A huge black banner hung in front of the mourners, and wreaths lay on the ground. The white lettering on the banner read, "Mourning in deep grief for deceased compatriots of the Zhouqu massive mudslide.""I only feel sad as I stand on the debris of our homes," said villager Zhang Xiujuan."Although my husband, my son and I survived, I lost more than 30 relatives in the mudslide," she said.In Dongjie, two thirds of the families were buried when the mudslide struck. GUANLING, Guizhou, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a rain-triggered landslide in southwest China's Guizhou Province had risen to 13 after rescuers recovered another two bodies Thursday night, rescue headquarters said.Some 2,000 people continued the rescue operation, but the chance of survival for the other 86 villagers was slim after being buried under mud for three days, rescuers said.More bodies are expected to be found as rescuers comb the ruins."It is almost impossible for any of the trapped to be alive now. We are doing our utmost to retrieve the bodies. Flood water blocked the rail transport in Shandong for two hours, affecting 22 trains, Thursday.Local meteorological bureaus said heavy rains would continue to pound Shandong and some area of Qinghai Province.
