(KGTV) - A trio of teenage girls is helping the Community Resource Center fill their "Holiday Baskets" this year.The girls, Lucie Babcock, Talia Buzi and Abbie Raysman, donated hundreds of dollars' worth of toys, food and household items to the CRC's yearly campaign."It's just a great feeling to know you're givine and helping people have an amazing holiday season," Lucie says.The three girls held a bake sale earlier this month to raise money. They sold muffins, cookies, brownies, coffee and orange juice in their Carmel Valley neighborhood."It was so much fun," says Abbie. "Lucie's brother was dancing in the middle of the street with a sign, stopping traffic."The bake sale raised around 0, which the girls used on a shopping spree for the donations.The CRC Holiday Baskets program helps 1,600 needy families in the North County. It gives them toys, clothes, food and more for the Christmas season. Organizers say they're impressed with the young girls' desire to give, and that it's small donations like these that help them serve so many people.Lucie started donating to Holiday Baskets when she was 9 years old. Over the years, her bake sale grew to the point where she needed help. Her friends Talia and Abbie were happy to lend a hand."I think it's a really great organization," says Talia of the CRC. "This is a great way to help people who are less fortunate."Lucie says it's all about making sure other kids get the same feeling of joy she does during the holidays."That's what I try to think about, that a kid who's not expecting anything can wake up and have something like this. DENVER – Shanann Watts’ family has sued Chris Watts to try and keep him from ever profiting off the deaths of their daughter or granddaughters.The lawsuit when Watts was sentenced to life in prison without parole, is a wrongful death claim intended to help the family recoup funeral expenses, the loss of Shanann’s future income and give them compensation for ongoing emotional distress stemming from the killings of Shanann, her daughters Bella and Celeste, and her unborn child.The family’s attorneys say that the family and Shanann’s estate are entitled to economic and non-economic damages under Colorado law, and the lawsuit asks that the family be able to amend the claims in the future. That will likely amount to thousands of dollars in restitution, District Attorney Michael Rourke said last week.One of the family’s attorneys, Steven Lambert, said last week that the point of the suit was to keep Watts from profiting off the case in the future should he write a book or try and get money from the sale of their house.“He cannot profit from any inheritance that he would normally receive from Shanann,” Lambert said. “On top of that, any proceed that he might derive from a sale of a book – he would not be able to keep any of that. Also, any assets that he might receive once we get a judgment from the court, we can file any liens and get things like that on any assets from here into the future.”The lawsuit says that Shanann’s father, Frank Rzucek, is also entitled to similar claims because Watts pleaded guilty to unlawful termination of a pregnancy for killing his and Shanann’s unborn child, whom the family called Nico.Watts pleaded guilty to nine counts in the case and received three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, in addition to several more consecutive and concurrent sentences for other counts.He was transferred this week to a Denver facility to undergo mental and medical evaluations before he is sent to prison. 1982

This year, during a virtual convention, there are no parties or meetups, which made us wonder what it has been like for delegates so far.A BIT OF A DISAPPOINTMENT Shaun Sindleman spent months running to be a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, representing the state of Colorado. He was looking forward to being on the convention floor and, as a Bernie Sanders supporter, being persuaded to vote for Joe Biden. "I was just like let down. This is my first time running as a delegate. It’s probably my last time running as a delegate," Sindleman said. 816

DENVER, Colo. -- Sam’s No. 3 has been serving customers since 1927.“My grandfather was Sam,” said Sam's No. 3 restaurant owner Alex Armatas.Armatas says the business has made it through historic upheavals like the Great Depression and uprisings after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, but never has the restaurant had to close for 10 weeks straight.“The impact has been brutal. You go from 100% of business to zero,” Armatas said.Employees like Jason Salazar were temporarily furloughed.“I’ve never not worked since I was 17. So, to just be unemployed was like… what do I do,” Salazar said.When it was time to come back, Salazar says they had to adjust to a new lengthy process.“Just walking in, somebody takes my temperature right away, I wash my hands right away, I put on gloves right away. We don’t even enter the building without a mask.”Masks, social distancing, sanitation -- so much had to be considered when thinking of ways to prevent the potential spread of the virus.“We would normally have a [ketchup] bottle at the table or whatever, but now they’re just individual little containers for them,” Salazar said.The less people touch, the better. Armatas says they’ve fully transitioned to a contactless ordering system. The menu is now on an app.“We got a new app so we can track how many people are in the restaurant so we’re not allowing more than 50 people in the restaurant,” Armatas said.Normally, they can seat more than 200 people. So they’re operating at 25% capacity. However, customers say they’re happy to be back. Anne Wesley says Sam’s No. 3 has been one of her favorite spots more than the past 15 years.“We love it because neither of us are great cooks so it’s wonderful to have somebody prepare a meal for us that we would never prepare for ourselves,” Wesley said.She says she feels completely safe.“I mean you walk in there’s hand sanitizer right away. There’s plenty of social distancing. Our server had a mask and gloves on and so I didn’t feel in any way that our health was being compromised.”The servers say they’ve been grateful for generous tips from customers like Wesley, especially considering they’re operating under thin margins.“The bottom line has been crushed. The restaurant industry has been hurt quite a bit,” Armatas said.According to the National Restaurant Association, the restaurant industry has suffered more job and sale losses than all other U.S. industries since the pandemic began. Some restaurants have permanently closed their doors. Senior Vice President Larry Lynch says those that have stayed afloat are eager to open up dining rooms again, but it will actually cost restaurant owners more.“If you’re takeout and delivery, your cost structure has gone down some so you can at least maintain at that point. But once turn on the lights and open the doors and turn on the air conditioning and bring back the staff, your costs go up,” Lynch said.“How much food should I bring in? How much labor can I afford?” Armatas said.Lynch says it’s more important than ever for restaurant owners to be smart with their finances.“The one thing they could do is manage those menus carefully. Reduce the number of offerings, make it the ones that are most popular. Limit the risk of food waste, and you’ve done a lot to bring yourself closer to profit,” Lynch said.He wants restaurants to feel encouraged and know that they can open again it just takes a lot of work.“It usually takes a week or two to get in and make sure everything’s operating: the refrigerators are clean, the walk-ins are clean, everything’s working properly, you get the staff back in,” Lynch said.Once the logistics are sorted out, Armatas says owners need to remind themselves of why they opened in the first place.“If people know that you really truly care about them and want to make their experience great, that has to be your focus. Because if your focus is money, it won’t work,” Armatas.Whether a business stays open or not, is ultimately up to the customers.“As a community, if we want to thrive, we have to help each other out. And by supporting local businesses, it’s a very easy way, and it’s an enjoyable way,” Wesley said. 4171

DETROIT - The bodies of 11 infants were found in the ceiling of a former funeral home on Detroit's east side Friday evening, according to Detroit Police. Police say the bodies were found in a box and in a small casket. Cadaver dogs were on scene, and in all police found the 11 bodies of infants and stillborns. The Cantrell Funeral Home was shut down earlier this year due to several violations and "deplorable, unsanitary conditions." Police say a tip through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) sparked the investigation. LARA reported Cantrell Funeral Home had 60 days to either assign its existing prepaid contracts to another person registered under the Prepaid Act and notify the Department and contract buyers of the assignment within 30 days of the assignment.The funeral home's other option was to cancel their current contracts and issue refunds to each contract buyer, providing copies of refund checks and correspondence to each contract buyer to the Department within 90 days, unless the Department modifies, vacates, or extends the terms of the Order.A spokesperson from LARA has released this statement regarding their investigation: 1228
