NEW YORK CITY — A woman was seriously injured Monday night when a man unexpectedly pushed her into a train pulling into a Manhattan subway station, according to the NYPD.Police said the shoving happened around 9:30 p.m. at the West 4th Street-Washington Square subway station near Sixth Avenue in Greenwich Village. The 55-year-old woman was standing on the platform when the man suddenly pushed her into a moving train pulling into the station, officials said. The victim hit the side of the train and then fell back onto the platform, police said. She was rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition. The NYPD later said the woman sustained a fractured spine and broken neck in the seemingly random attack.Police responded and took a Queens man, who they believed to be responsible, into custody, according to authorities.Matthew Montanez, 23, was arrested on charges including felony assault and felony reckless endangerment, the NYPD said. This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom on WPIX in New York City. 1032

NEW YORK — Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday that all New York school districts were able to reopen for the next academic year.Cuomo said that his decision was based on infection rates across the state. He previously announced a state formula to determine whether or not schools will reopen.School districts have been developing reopening plans, with feedback from parents and teachers. However, according to the governor, of the 749 districts across the state, 127 have yet to submit reopening plans and 50 plans were incomplete. The Department of Health will continue to go over plans as the come in, the governor said.According to Cuomo, the Health Department can disapprove of a district's plans if they don't meet the proper safety measures, which could delay the opening of schools in that district.New York City Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza also unveiled updated school reopening plans this week, which requires teachers and students to be in masks the whole day.Class sizes have also been slashed to 12 or less students, while many areas like gyms and cafeterias are getting revamped to create makeshift classrooms.Disinfection and virus protection are some of the top areas of concern.New York schools have been closed since mid-March in an attempt to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus outbreak. 1323

NEW ORLEANS — A Black man whose life sentence for stealing hedge clippers in a home burglary drew scathing criticism from the chief justice of Louisiana's Supreme Court has been granted parole. Louisiana's high court had denied release for 63-year-old Fair Wayne Bryant earlier this year for the 1997 burglary that netted him a set of hedge clippers. In dissent, Chief Justice Bernette Johnson said the habitual offender law under which Bryant was sentenced was a “modern manifestation” of Jim Crow era laws aimed at jailing Black people for simple crime. Conditions of Bryant's parole include mandatory attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and community service. 678

NEWPORT BEACH (CNS) - President Donald Trump is scheduled to come to Orange County Sunday for a private fundraiser at tech mogul Palmer Luckey's estate, it was reported Friday. The news came Thursday, just as latest fundraising numbers showed the president falling behind former Vice President Joe Biden in campaign cash, The Orange County Register reported.Biden reportedly raised a record-breaking 3 million in September to Trump's 7.8 million. And Biden reported 2 million in cash heading into October vs. Trump's 1 million.Invitations for Sunday's fundraiser at Luckey's Newport Beach home show tickets ranging from ,800 for an individual admission to 0,000 for a couple to attend and take a photo with the president, according to the Register. Ric Grenell, Trump's former acting Director of National Intelligence, is also slated to be a special guest at the event. The event was originally slated to take place Oct. 6, but was postponed after Trump contracted the coronavirus. The president says he no longer feels ill and his doctors have cleared him for public appearances. But some experts have expressed concern about him holding in-person events less than two weeks after he was released from the hospital, and they continue to discourage any large public gatherings.Luckey has donated 5,600 to Trump's campaign this cycle, according to Federal Election Commission records. And he's donated more than .7 million total this cycle, with much of the rest of those funds going to GOP committees and Republicans running for seats, such as Michelle Steel and Young Kim, who are both trying to unseat Democratic members of Congress.Luckey is a Long Beach native who was 19 when he co-founded the Oculus Rift virtual-reality system in Irvine. His company sold for an estimated billion to Facebook in 2014. 1838

NOANK, Ct. -- As a humid summer breeze blew across the bow of the oyster boat Marc Harrell was standing on, he looked out toward Long Island Sound and could see some signs that the nation’s economy is recovering.Harrell has spent most of his life fishing those waters for oysters under the guidance of Captain Jim Markow, both men are the backbone of Mystic Oysters, a family owned business that’s been around for decades.“Our business hasn’t completely rebounded yet, it’s still going to be some time before it does,” Harrell said as he dropped an oyster dredge off the side of the boat.In Noank, Connecticut, the headwaters of the Atlantic Ocean come crashing into the Mystic River. The combination of saltwater and fresh water creates what most in the coastal community say are some of the best oysters in the world. But the coronavirus outbreak has been threatening a way of life that’s been a part of this community for generations. It’s a pandemic impacting both land and sea.“We don’t know what’s going to happen and we’re still not 100% optimistic that everything is going to be the same once this is all done,” Markow said. For the better part of 40 years, Markow has operated Mystic Oysters. The small family-owned company prides itself on harvesting oysters directly from their own oyster beds and shipping them directly to restaurants and suppliers up and down the East Coast. But as countless restaurants closed because of the coronavirus, Mystic Oysters no longer had a customer base.Like so many other small businesses across the country, COVID-19 has forced Mystic Oysters to reinvent themselves. The company has started selling directly to consumers, harnessing social media and word-of-mouth to bring customers directly to the docks to buy oysters as fresh as they come. They’ve even started coordinating with other small businesses and fisherman to hold farmers’ markets and pop-up sales tents around the area.Revenue is still down considerably but Markow sees a future in their new business model.“It’s exciting to see the opportunities that are out there that we weren’t aware of,” he said. “We were forced into a situation to reinvent our business and I think in the long run it’ll be a positive, in the short run though, definitely scary.”Experts say that kind of ingenuity and creativity is something other small businesses can emulate as they try to navigate the uncertainty surrounding the virus.“That’s always been the staple of small business, finding those market opportunities and working with the resources they have to survive,” said Holly Wade, who serves as a researcher with the National Federation of Independent Businesses. As for Mystic Oysters, they see diversification as a way forward. For the first time in the company’s history they’ve even started selling fresh lobsters directly to consumers. Markow hopes other small business owners who might be struggling see what they’re doing here and find hope for a future rebound.“Don’t give up, keep thinking. There’s a lot of opportunities out there if you want to be creative.” 3071
