ESCONDIDO, CA (KGTV) -- Due to the pandemic, musical groups. both large and small, had to put their concert tours on hold. And that is exactly what happened to a mother and daughter duo from Escondido. Ruth and Emilia have had to find other ways to perform their environmentally themed music."It's always entertaining, you never know what is going to happen."The two have a love for children's music, as their lyrics, and performances always provide a learning experience for their young audience."We have two messages in our music," says Ruth. "One is taking care of the environment, and the other is acceptance of others to make the world a better place." Emilia says one other goal is also to keep the music fun and lively. "So that it would be something grown-ups don't mind listening to in the car, but also that kids enjoy dancing to."Prior to the pandemic, Ruth and Emilia planned a summer tour of libraries, children's museums, and kids festivals, but when the Coronavirus hit, those plans changed."Our CD release party was canceled because it happened the same day all the stay at home starting taking place."So the duo has had to adapt, and change the way they could reach their audience."We found other outlets, like doing live shows on Facebook and on Instagram. And even seeing if we could expand to people we wouldn't necessarily see on our tour."However, some good news came from the pandemic, as it brought mother and daughter closer together. Emilia has made her way back to Escondido for the time being, from her home in Los Angeles. "We don't get to see each other everyday," says Emilia. "Now, Ruth and Emilia as a unit, can flourish some new stuff that we haven't been able to do, but have been wanting to do for a while." 1754

Federal investigators are looking into nine mail-in ballots that were reportedly discovered discarded from a county elections office in northeast Pennsylvania. The district attorney in Luzerne County reached out to federal authorities Monday, according to the U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. The FBI and state police are investigating."At this point we can confirm that a small number of military ballots were discarded," U.S. Attorney David Freed's office said in a statement, adding that of the nine ballots, seven had been cast for Trump."Two of the discarded ballots had been resealed inside their appropriate envelopes by Luzerne elections staff prior to recovery by the FBI and the contents of those 2 ballots are unknown,” the statement continued. The investigation also found four “apparently official, bar-coded, absentee ballot envelopes that were empty” in an outside dumpster.Military ballots and other absentee ballots are supposed to be stored securely, unopened, until official counting begins on Election Day.The investigation, Freed says, found staff in Luzerne County opened nearly all envelopes “received in the elections office were opened as a matter of course. It was explained to investigators the envelopes used for official overseas, military, absentee and mail-in ballot requests are so similar, that the staff believed that adhering to the protocol of preserving envelopes unopened would cause them to miss such ballot requests.”Freed states this was a known issue from previous elections and the problem has not been corrected.Freed says the investigation into the small number of mail-in ballots remains active, and there are still questions about what exactly happened, he wanted to make it public at this point “based on the limited amount of time before the general election and the vital public importance of these issues.” 1885

Election officials in Georgia are expected to release a report that details the results of a hand recount of the 2020 presidential election on Thursday, a report that's expected to confirm President-elect Joe Biden narrowly defeated President Donald Trump in the state. The recount — which was prompted by a state law and is not connected to any suspected fraud — was ordered last week by Georgia Sec. of State Brad Raffensperger.Counties were required to report the results of their hand recount by 11:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday night. The Associated Press reports that Gabriel Sterling, the voting system implementation manager in the state, said he expects a report on the recount to be released by mid-day Thursday.Georgia is the final state that The Associated Press has not yet called for either candidate.Prior to the recount, Biden held a lead of about 14,000 votes statewide. While a handful of counties have reported that the hand recount found a few Trump votes that had not been counted, the new tally is only expected to shift the vote count by a few hundred votes. On Wednesday, DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond directly disputed an allegation of a "vote error" levied by State Republican party chairman David Shafer. While Shafer alleged that the error affected the count by more than 9,000 votes, Thurmond called the claim "unsubstantiated." Even in the unlikely event that Georgia would swing to Trump, Biden would still have the 270 electoral college votes needed to claim the presidency. 1511

ESCONDIDO (KGTV) – An Escondido couple is out thousands of dollars after falling for a sophisticated truck scam“You hear about it everywhere, but you’re like it’s not going to happen to me,” Terha Newby said.   Terha and her husband, Chris, found the perfect truck for sale on Craigslist back in September. Someone from El Monte was selling a Chevy Silverado 2600 HD for about ,000. “The registration matches the pink slip, the VIN, everything. You’re like, 'Its good!'” Terha said.  But it was far from good.It turns out the truck was stolen out of Orange County last year. Afterwards, someone replaced the VINs on the truck with a duplicate VIN of a truck that someone owns in Texas. They even had matching paperwork to go with it. But the VINs set off an alarm for the DMV when the Newbys went to get their new truck registered.“The VIN that was in the vehicle belonged to truck in Texas, and it was on a lien,” Terha said. “These guys are professionals, they’re out there, and that’s all they do for a living.”Chris said the seller gave them a Carfax report, but it was a fake one. He now regrets not getting their own. “From now on, for a fee, Carfax would have prevented it,” Chris said. The stolen Silverado was impounded and went back to the insurance company of the truck’s original owner. Luckily, they sold it back to the Newbys for about ,000, which they gladly agreed to.“They told us this is not something we do, but they felt bad for our situation,” Tehra said. “Still tough we had to re-buy anything.”“I’m just glad I have a car,” Chris said. The CHP gave these car-buying tips when buying from a third person private party. 1700

Families in South Texas and across the country are dealing with similar issues as nursing homes and other long-term care facilities as they restrict visitors to help protect vulnerable residents and staff from the coronavirus pandemic. While times have certainly changed for how people interact during this COVID-19 pandemic, the Solstice Senior Living Center hosted a “Hugs for Hope” event to help bridge the gap between family and friends in a creative way - with a “hugging booth.”“Hope for a better time, hope for a better place, for our residence, and for their families," Solstice Senior Living executive director Michelle Kelm said. "Hugs to make them feel like there is hope for our future, that this is not going to be our future forever."We will have contact with our families, and we will find ways to overcome anything that comes our way.”Families said the human touch with their relatives was especially comforting.“We have been up to visit him a couple of times where we could pass things to him," said Barbra Culp, who was visiting her 96-year-old father. "This is the first time we can actually touch him. I think it is great. I hope all the places do it."A sheet of plastic with holes and specialty sleeves may seem simple, but for the folks here at the Center, this divider is special.“It felt great; it would have felt better if we wouldn't have the gloves, and the thing in between us," said Carol Solovey, who visited her 89-year-old mother. "But it felt great."Others said they have been waiting months to reconnect with their loved ones."Oh, it felt amazing," said Kim Buchanan, who was visiting her mother. "It was something you didn't want to let go; you just want to keep holding her.""I have not been able to physically touch her since February. Solstice has done a great job of keeping our families protected. It has been a long time coming."The event was especially meaningful for Solstice Senior Living resident Judi Barraba.“I can't describe it...it has been so long," Barraba said. "Usually we are a huggy, huggy family. So not being able to do it for five or six months, it has been hard."Saturday's event could not have happened without the help of C-101 radio host Rex Gabriel, who helped families connect with their loved ones while following all CDC guidelines with his “Hugging Booth."“Everything is CDC-friendly. As you have seen, we are wiping down in between usage with two different kinds of cleaners in between each use," Kelm said. "Everybody is wearing masks, gloves, and we are asking that they all social distance. We have had all families wait in their cars till it is time to actually come up to receive their hug,” said Kelm.“It is actually like my heart is touching her heart. It is the closest we have been in months, and it is the closest you get to touch your loved ones. I also know that they are doing a great job of protecting them as well so we can see them after all this is done,” said Buchanan. While COVID-19 keeps people apart, the love of family and friends is still essential.Story was originally reported by Roland Rodriguez at KRIS 3104
