VALLEY CENTER, Calif. (KGTV) — A fiery plane crash in Guatemala left a North County family without a husband and father. Luke Sullivan, 28, was killed after his plane crashed near Chimaltenango, located northwest of Guatemala City. Luke's wife, Ashley, says they had recently moved there three weeks ago, after Luke got his dream job, as a missionary pilot. He was working with a group operating in Guatemala. Luke would fly missionary personnel to various villages. He was working to become a missionary himself to speak to the different communities. His plane went down on Thursday, June 27. Ashley says he was making a landing, but something went wrong. "We were waiting for him, because it looked like he was just going to turn around, making a go-around approach," she said. "I hear an explosion and see more smoke." Emergency crews pulled Luke out of the plane before it exploded. His passenger had jumped out of the plane. Both men were severely burned. Luke was taken to the hospital but died overnight. His passenger survived and is currently being treated at a burn center in Dallas. "Luke was an extremely good pilot, and very experienced," Ashley said. She says he's been flying for more than nine years. "What we kind of pieced together — my father is a pilot also — is that something caught fire in the cockpit. It was very quick because I saw his landing and it looked perfectly normal." An investigation into the crash is ongoing. The Sullivans have three young children, twins that are three years old, and a one year old. His wife is also five months pregnant. The family has started a GoFundMe for funeral expenses. They've also started a GoFundMe to help pay for the family of the other man in the crash, to help pay for his hospital bills. 1783

"Elder Orphans" are on the rise due to increased isolation due to COVID-19 and experts say it’s also causing an uptick in elder abuse.“It's worse now than it's ever been,” says Anthony Cirillo, an aging and caregiving expert and president of the "Aging Experience," a company that focuses on elder care and caregiving issues. Elder abuse was a problem before COVID-19 hit. The pandemic only exacerbated it, Cirillo said.“We’re all going through these kinds of things and I think you become more vulnerable and emotional and become more open to listening to people who might be trying to exploit you. So isolation is just a killer right now,” says Cirillo.Debby Bitticks says her father-in-law became a victim of elder abuse.“I was really naive in assuming that this person was going to give quality care turned out to be a crook,” Bitticks said. “Everything that you could possibly read about that could go wrong with elder abuse was happening with my father-in-law.”Well before the coronavirus, elder abuse was happening right before her eyes.“We had to hire a private investigator. Of course we notified social services, had to hire an elder care lawyer, yes, we did save his life and brought him to live with us,” Bitticks said.She turned the experience into a movie called "Saving our Parents."“We just want to let people know inspect what you except,” Bitticks said. “Don’t ever assume that your parents are OK without knowing to look for any signs of change.”The film was made in 2008. Since then, it's been shown all over the world, won awards and has been used as a training tool.“It’s as important today as it was when I made it,” Bitticks said. “It’s endless in terms of information, its timeless. All of us have aging parents, the new generation needs to know this."When asked about the warning signs, and what you should look for to spot a problem, Cirillo said, “Look for the signs. Bruises, welts, lacerations, is mom or dad taking care of themselves, are they clean or unwashed, are they having trouble sleeping, have they lost a bunch of weight, any sign of trauma.”He also says if you hire someone, carefully screen them and do a background check. Monitor your loved one's finances and watch their bank accounts. Make sure you draw up an estate plan. And he says start those conversations now.“Everything is about preparation. nobody wants to talk about aging until there’s a crisis situation and when there’s a crisis everybody reacts but in reality, we should be talking about all of these issues early on,” Cirillo said.Experts also advise, especially during this pandemic, if you can't be there, it's imperative that you have someone check in on your family as it's more important than ever to be involved. With the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) yet to develop a regulatory framework for CBD-infused products, states are stepping in. This week, Illinois introduced new legislation that could require the testing of CBD products sold in its state. The hemp-derived cannabidiol, or CBD, is sold as a supplement, promising to manage everything from anxiety and insomnia to chronic pain.Rahul Easwar, co-founder of Chicago-based CBD-retailer LeafyQuick, says the product is everywhere.“Gummies, edibles, we’ve got bath bombs, salts, topical lotions," Easwar says. "You name it, there’s CBD in it.”But while some CBD shops like LeafyQuick only sell products that have been tested, there are no laws requiring that. “We don’t obviously accept every brand that knocks on our door, and we go through a very stringent due-diligence process,” says Easwar.And because CBD products are considered supplements rather than drugs, they remain largely unregulated. Since 2015 the Food and Drug Administration has issued more than four dozen warning letters to firms marketing unapproved drugs allegedly containing CBD. Many did not contain the levels of the cannabis derivative they claimed to.It’s that uncertainty about what’s in the products that prompted Illinois state representative Bob Morgan to act. “These are products coming in from other states more often than not are not being tested,” says Morgan. “We don't know if they have heavy metals pesticides contaminants synthetic THC or something way worse.”Morgan is pushing a bill that would require all CBD products sold in the state to pass minimum testing standards. “We should have these high expectations, especially since people were consuming this product,” says Morgan. “These are things people are ingesting and we have to make sure they’re safe.”If they’re not safe, the proposed law would require untested products to be pulled from shelves and online. Sellers violating the law could face stiff fines.It’s something retailers like Rahul Easwar say is essential to the CBD business' long-term success.“Especially retailers, more so the consumers need to demand such regulations and more stringent regulations in my opinion.”For now, there are still no national standards for CBD testing.
