BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) - China is still likely to meet its full-year inflation target this year despite the August inflation rate quickening to a 22-month high of 3.5 percent year on year, officials from the country' s top economic planer said Wednesday.In August, the consumer price index (CPI) rose mainly by increased prices of food products like pork and eggs, as the coming Mid-Autumn festival in China had boosted the consumption of food items, according to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).Further, the price rise of vegetables due to seasonal reasons contributed to the August CPI increase, said the NDRC authorities.The upcoming autumn harvest, which accounts for about 70 percent of China's annual grain output, is expected to stabilize food prices, which have a one-third weighting in the calculation of the CPI, said the NDRC.The NDRC also revealed that China would place central pork reserves on the market, which means pork prices cannot rise higher.Further, the industrial consumer prices are remaining stable with a slight decline, and this is not conducive to inflation, according to the NDRC.These elements are assisting in the drop of the CPI through the rest of the year, and is helpful for China to attain its full year inflation target, it added.China has targeted a 3 percent rise in consumer prices this year.

TIANJIN, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China has become Volvo's third largest market, with more of its car models to go on sale in the world's largest auto market this year, Chief Executive Office (CEO) of Volvo Cars China said in Tianjin.Dr. Alexander Klose, CEO of Volvo Cars China, told Xinhua at the Ninth Tianjin International Automobile Trade Show, being held from Friday to Wednesday.Klose said Volvo Cars had entered a new era of fast development, adding that its sales in China roared in 2010.As of the end of September, Volvo's global sales volume was up 12.5 percent year on year, compared with 52 percent year-on-year rise in China, he said.Volvo also aggressively expanded its dealer network to 98 outlets in 81 Chinese cities this year.Two new Volvo sales centers opened in Beijing within merely one week in early October, about two months after east China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. acquired the Swedish brand from the U.S. auto giant Ford for 1.5 billion U.S. dollars in early August.Dr. Klose said he was confident of seeing tremendous growth in China's auto market in the next five years."As the Chinese government has increased the tax rate for large displacement cars already, we now have a lot of cars below three liters, and I think we'll stick to that strategy, as you can see now the XC60 which was introduced today is just two liters," he said."As the technology advances, we'll probably even see 1.6 liter engines or 1.5 liter engines in the future," he added.Volvo Cars is not the only automaker hoping to take advantage of China's rapidly growing auto market.Bentley, the famous British luxury carmaker, will open a new sales center in China at Tianjin next Thursday, which is the 11th one in China, according to a press release by Shanghai-based Zenith Integrated Communications Corp. BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- One of China's top banking regulators has called upon the nation's commercial lenders to improve their balance sheets and reduce excessive reliance on lending for profits.Wang Zhaoxing, deputy chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission(CBRC), said banks should not seek excessive profits from a rapid increase in loans and a widening gap between lending and deposit rates, which is unsustainable.Chinese banks went on a lending spree in 2009 in response to the urging of the government as part of the 4-trillion-yuan (601 billion U.S. dollars) stimulus package to ward off the effects of the global financial crisis.Also, nearly 9.6 trillion yuan in new loans last year fuelled fears of banks distributing bad loans.Many banks continue to depend upon issuing credit to government-backed projects to secure profits, Wang said at an industry meeting Thursday. However, those projects often lack adequate risk management.Further, Wang urged lenders to improve balance sheets and the quality of assets, as well as the ability to manage risk aversion.Chinese banking and financial institutions reported net profits of 668.4 billion yuan last year, of which a lion's share came from the gap between deposit and lending rates, investment proceeds and fees, according to the report on China's banking industry issued by the CBRC in July.The report noted that the average capital adequacy ratio stood at 11.4 percent at the end of last year, above the international safety line, while the non-performing loan (NPL) ratio fell to 1.58 percent, down 0.84 percentage points from the level at the beginning of 2009.Despite the improved data, CBRC chairman Liu Mingkang has repeated warnings that an NPL rebound could bring with it risks from lending to local government financing platforms and the property sector which has accumulated asset bubbles.At the meeting, Wang said the CBRC would enhance oversight to assure unscrupulous and unhealthy financial institutions are phased out of the market.Also, China will gradually move towards a market-driven interest rate mechanism, which would ultimately squeeze bank profits.

BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Thursday called for the country's citizens to actively participate in and cooperate with the sixth national census that starts on Nov.1.Li made the remarks in a pep talk through national TV and radio broadcast for the census on Thursday, saying that the upcoming census was a major event as the Chinese population and its structure and flow had greatly changed since 2000 when the fifth census was conducted.China, the world's most populous country, conducts national census every ten years to collect basic information for making economic and social policies.Every citizen has the obligation to participate in the national census and cooperate with the enumerators coming to their homes to make the statistics more accurate, Li said, adding that personal information collected in the census will be kept as confidential data.
