SHENZHEN, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Chen Yunlin, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) said Saturday that the ARATS will offer more support to help Taiwan businessmen weather through the financial crisis.     Chen said this at a symposium here Saturday on the development of Taiwan companies amid the financial crisis.     According to the Taipei World Trade Center, the second purchase delegation from the mainland had shown intention to purchase more than 600 million U.S. dollars worth of goods from Taiwan companies in the coming 12 months during a weeklong visit to the island, mainly involving food, drinks, garments and daily necessities.     "Under the current circumstances, we should positively seek more cooperation opportunities to overcome the hardships," said Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).     The mainland will send the third procurement delegation to the island in August, focusing on the island's chemical industry, electronic products and automobiles.     More than 50 representatives from the mainland-based Association of Taiwan Investment Enterprises, the Taiwan-based "Chinese National Federation of Industries" and other organizations attended the symposium, which was jointly held by the ARATS and the SEF.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan met with visiting chairman of the U.S. Economic Recovery Advisory Board Paul Volcker here Wednesday when they saw eye-to-eye on stepping up dialogue and cooperation.     During the meeting, they agreed to make concerted efforts to develop the Sino-American "positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship for the 21st century", which Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama agreed to build during their meeting in London in April. DAMASCUS, April 26 (Xinhua) -- During his Middle East tour, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Sunday put out a five-point proposal to push forward the Middle East peace process and common development.     Yang, who has visited Egypt, the Palestinian territories, Israel and Syria, said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua that China has been closely following the situation in the Middle East and he has made in-depth exchanges of views with concerned parties on various issues of the region during his Middle East visit. Under such circumstances, Yang put the five-point proposal, which includes:     First, the concerned parties should adhere to the peace talks, and firmly promote the peace process on the basis of relevant UN resolutions, the "land for peace" principle, the "Road Map" plan, and the Arab peace initiative, Yang said.     Second, the parties should take positive measures to restore stability and accumulate mutual trust, so as to create conditions for the development of peace process.     Third, China believes the two-state solution should be maintained and calls for an early establishment of an independent Palestinian state and the two countries of Palestine and Israeli live in harmony.     "This is the ultimate way out for the Palestinian issue, which can give guarantee to the Middle East peace and security," Yang said.     Fourth, the international community should continue to pay due attention to the Middle East issue, and deliver its supports to the peace talks, the inner-Palestinian unity and economic growth.     Fifth, the peace negotiations between Palestine and Israel, Syria and Israel, Lebanon and Israel should advance in a coordinated way in order to achieve comprehensive peace across the Middle East region, Yang said.     "As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will continue to maintain close communication and coordination with parties concerned to play a constructive role in pushing for a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Middle East issue," Yang added.     He said he has enunciated China's position on current Middle East issues during the trip. He hoped relevant parties could stick to the peaceful negotiation and accumulate mutual trust in a bid to advance the Middle East peace process.     He said he believes his visits to the four Middle East nations will contribute to the peace process.     Yang left the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday after meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mualem. 

BEIJING, June 8 (Xinhua) -- The new alliance between Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton Ltd. might lead to a monopoly operation and China should be prepared for anti-monopoly measures, warned an expert.     Mei Xinyu, an economist with the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), told Xinhua Monday that China should closely watch the joint venture process of the two mining giants and be ready to work with other countries to curb market manipulation when necessary, with the help of the anti-monopoly law.     Rio Tinto scrapped the proposed 19.5 billion U.S. dollars of investment by Aluminum Corp. of China, or Chinalco, on Friday.     The company announced a cooperative venture with BHP Billiton, which would pay Rio Tinto 5.8 billion U.S. dollars to set up a joint venture to run the iron ore resources of both companies in west Australia.     It was "something other than economic concern", said Zhang Yansheng, director of the Institute of Foreign Trade of the National Development and Reform Commission.     Almost half of China's iron ore needed to be imported, more than half of which was imported from Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton, according to Shan of CISA.     Colin Barnett, premier of Western Australia, told Australian media last Friday China was not on the list of approvals that the two companies needed to obtain.     Internationally they would need the approval of the European Union and possibly the U.S. Justice Department, apart from investigations at nation and state level, he said.     Also, Zhang Junsheng, director of the WTO Research Institute at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, said China might not have a say on the issue, as neither Rio Tintoor BHP Billiton had an affiliated company in China.
