CAMPO, Calif. — Campo Elementary School students were forced off a school bus after a man stormed onto the bus armed with two knives.Matthew Barker, 37, of Campo, was arrested by the San Diego Sheriff's Department after he boarded the bus packed with students at an apartment complex on Friday around 8:30 a.m., according to Mountain Empire Unified School District superintendent Kathy Granger.Officials said Barker entered the bus and was immediately told by the driver to leave. Barker ignored the driver and continued up the stairs and toward students before the driver got in front of him.As Barker tried to push past the driver, a grandmother of one of the students saw what was happening and got onto the bus to help the driver, officials said. That's when Barker reportedly pulled out a knife and swung at the driver.As the driver and grandmother struggled with Barker, an older student ushered students to the back exit of the school bus and called to nearby parents for help. The students were able to exit out of the bus unharmed.Another good Samaritan then got on the bus, at which point Barker turned the knife on himself, according to the Sheriff's Department. The Samaritan pried the knife away from Barker and pulled him off the bus as deputies arrived.Barker has been charged with felony assault. Authorities are investigating the incident and believes drugs were a factor in the attack.The bus driver and Samaritans were not injured."We take safety very seriously and want to assure you our buses remain a safe form of transportation for getting children to and from school," Granger said in a statement. 1669

NASA's Perseverance blasted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, atop an Atlas V rocket Thursday morning. It's the first step in an ambitious project to bring the first Martian rock samples back to Earth to be analyzed for evidence of ancient life. He applauds orchestras that have found innovative ways to keep the notes floating off the page from streamed performances and outdoor recitals to film projects."They’ve moved the artists into film studios using very safe protocols and distancing," Scorca said. "But rather than doing a streamed live performance which would necessarily have a lot of the artists congregate in person with one another, they brought them to a film studio so that people could be recorded separately and distanced and then drawn together into a film iteration.”For now, Trottman-Huiet says he’ll continue writing songs and plans to eventually be back onstage with his beloved tuba.“I mean there’s certain things that happen onstage with a large group of people that’s just magic," Trottman-Huiet said. "And I’m sure I can get some feelings playing guitar and singing my own songs, but I don’t know I would be fulfilled doing one or the other. Either way I definitely want to have both in my life.”Whether it’s through tuba or folk songs, Trottman-Huiet plans to continue decorating time with music.“I thought for sure my first album would be on the tuba, and not a whole bunch of country folkish songs I’ve written over the last few months, but it’s been very enjoyable.” 3936

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - “Right now, it’s worse than I’ve ever seen it in my life. I see a new face come through here every day,” says Gregory Parada of Carlsbad. He has been homeless for several years.The City of Carlsbad reports there’s a growing number of homeless people in the community. A team of specially-trained police officers have been doing homeless outreach for the last eight months. As of last week, the City Council approved a 5,000 contract with Interfaith Community Services which will provide two full time socials workers to assist with outreach in the field. On Saturday, 10News was granted permission to ride along with law enforcement during “compassion enforcement”, as the city calls it. “That's as simple as connecting them to a family member [or they] might have hygiene needs and we have hygiene kits that we got from a bunch of nonprofits," says Sgt. Bryan Hargett. These officers are working to get the homeless population the items and services they need. The city of San Diego still has a much bigger homeless population than Carlsbad. According to San Diego County’s WeAllCount report, there are 4,912 homeless people in the City of San Diego. There are only 210 homeless people in the City of Carlsbad, but that’s up from 160 homeless people in Carlsbad last year.Davye Sauermilch tells us she’s considering getting help after her interactions with the officers. "My boyfriend's now in rehab because of these guys,” she adds.“I guess they protect me. I feel fine about them,” says Parada. Sgt. Hargett explains, “If they don't trust us, we're not going to be able to work together.” He adds, “One of the things we're learning about being out here is consistency. It could take us 30 contacts [with a person] and on the 31st they're like, ‘Hey, I want help now.’”Outreach coordinators will report back to the City Council on the progress of the initiative later this year. 1927
