The holiday season is upon us and that means Black Friday is less than a month away. While many retail experts are saying Black Friday is dead, we found that might not ring true for most shoppers.Janice Lieberman is a retail expert for Deal News and she says, “even though you will start seeing deals now they will get even lower.”Retailers are excited to get you in the holiday spirit and have you shopping in stores, not online.  Lieberman says, “they want those door busters. They want the fever. They want you to enjoy shopping, seeing other people and touching merchandise which is becoming so foreign.”However, this year a number of retailers including Home Depot, Ikea and Office Depot will remain closed on Nov. 24 and REI is even closing its stores on Black Friday. But, for the thousands of stores that will be keeping their doors open, Lieberman says, we need to get prepared before the big shopping day.“You need to get onto social media. You need to sign up with all the stores you enjoy shopping at because they will give their loyal members added deals or select deals.”If you are not about social media or even couponing, try signing up online at places like Deal News. You click on the items you want and they will send you an alert letting you know who has the lowest price.Lieberman says, “I really think if you can hold off now I know it’s not so easy but if you can hold off to Thanksgiving weekend, the day before, the day after, even Cyber Monday that’s when you’re going to see the lowest prices.”Thanksgiving Day will have the best deals for any item. Black Friday is the day to shop for electronics, toys and clothing. Cyber Monday you’ll find the lowest prices on computers, kitchenware and shoes. If you really want to save big on Black Friday, Lieberman suggests you create a list of all the items you plan to buy. If not, expect to pay more by simply purchasing items that you didn’t need. 1955

The novel coronavirus pandemic is impacting normal routine, and that includes elections.By now, both presidential campaigns would traditionally be crisscrossing the country, holding rallies for thousands in various swing state cities. But that's not the case.TRUMP'S STRATEGY VS BIDEN'S STRATEGYPresident Donald Trump has stopped rallies following his appearance in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where crowds did not meet expectations. However, the president is using the power of the office to still travel to swing states and hold official White House events. In the last three weeks, President Trump has held official White House events in Texas, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Ohio. Meanwhile, the Democratic nominee, Joe Biden, has suspended virtually all swing-state travel. Biden has made several speeches in Pennsylvania, but that is a quick drive from his home in Delaware. Instead, Biden has campaigned virtually, holding online streaming events, while granting interviews to several local television stations in swing states. IS BIDEN'S STRATEGY WORKING? President Trump has attacked Biden's strategy, saying the former vice president "won't get out of his basement." The Biden campaign believes it is has energized supporters. "We are campaigning in a way that we can keep our supporters, our staff safe, but we are still getting the vice president’s message out," TJ Ducklo, press secretary for the Biden campaign, said. When asked if Biden supporters may get tired of virtual events by the November election, Ducklo said, "We are seeing an incredible amount of support throughout the country."WHAT OUR REPORTERS ARE SAYINGTo get insight into whether the Biden strategy is working, we asked Scripps' political reporters in Detroit and Cleveland to ask their sources."I don’t know if the virtual events are mobilizing voters beyond those that are already mobilized," said John Kosich, political reporter with WEWS in Cleveland."I think the novelty of politics as a whole has worn off," weighed in Brian Abel, a political reporter with WXYZ in Detroit. "People are ready to cast their votes." 2104

The next few weeks mark the beginning of serious financial uncertainty for millions of people, because a slew of debt, from income tax payments to several months of rent, are going to be due at the same time. “It is going to be a perfect storm of financial difficulty for many, many people,” said Andrea Bopp Stark, an attorney at the National Consumer Law Center (NCLC).The center recommends three steps for anyone that finds themselves in a financially difficult situation regarding debt.Step one: create a list of priority bills and debt to pay off. “People are going to be barraged with debt collectors calling and trying to get them to pay on a medical debt or a credit card debt, but those debts are less important,” said Stark. “Pay debts that if you didn’t pay them it would cause immediate harm to your family.”Those are things like your rent and a car payment, especially if you need your car to go to work.“If you have a judgment against you, a court judgment against you for a debt, it is important to try and make a payment plan to pay that because creditor could issue a garnishment against your wages,” Stark added. Step two: contact your lender to make a payment plan on those priority debts.“We are seeing data come in that there are people who are delinquent and don’t have a forbearance agreement when they could very easily be in a forbearance agreement,” Stark added. “I know wait times on the phone are horrible right now, but you have to be persistent and get through and find out what help is available.”Data collected by the U.S. Census shows that delinquency rates are higher in communities of color.“It is mostly Black and Latinx borrowers who are not getting these forbearance agreements,” said Stark. “Whether they don’t know about it or nobody is reaching out to them to let them know this is available, we don’t know why but that is a population that is going to be disparately impacted and has already been disparately impacted by this whole crisis.”Step three: find a way to stick to your prioritized debt list. “It may sound obvious but if you have it on paper and you have created a budget, stick that to the refrigerator or wherever, then you know these are the priority spending items,” said Stark. “If your son or daughter say, ‘Oh, I want this or that,' ‘no, look at the fridge these are our priority spending items, sorry.’” Because every situation may not be solved in three steps, the NCLC has now made its in-depth guide to Surviving Debt available for free. It has template letters to send to debt collectors and hundreds of pages of help to get you through this tough time. 2626

The IRS announced this week it has extended the deadline for those who did not file a tax return the last two years to request a ,200 stimulus check. The deadline, which was previously slated for October 15, will now be on November 21.The economic stimulus checks, which millions of Americans received during the spring and early summer, is for most American adults earning less than ,000 a year. The IRS paid the checks out to those who either file an annual tax return or receive government benefits. American adults who are not considered a dependent, such as young adults living at home, and do not file a tax return are required to submit a form to the IRS. The form is available on the IRS’ website."We took this step to provide more time for those who have not yet received a payment to register to get their money, including those in low-income and underserved communities," said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. "The IRS is deeply involved in processing and programming that overlaps filing seasons. Any further extension beyond November would adversely impact our work on the 2020 and 2021 filing seasons. The Non-Filers portal has been available since the spring and has been used successfully by many millions of Americans."As a reminder, here is who is eligible for a stimulus check:,400 – Couples earning less than 0,000 a year (couples earning 0,000 - 8,000 will receive a prorated check).,200 – Individuals earning less than ,000 a year (individuals earning ,000 - ,000 will receive a prorated check).,200 – Heads of households earning less than 2,500 (heads of households earning 2,500 - 6,000 will receive a prorated check).0 - Each dependent child age 16 or under as of Dec. 31, 2019 (for qualifying individuals and couples). 1791
