NANNING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- Two environmental inspectors went on trial in south China on Tuesday over case of serious river pollution that had threatened the drinking water source of a city with 1.5 million people.
Ensuing rainfall reportedly washed some of the chemicals into local water supplies, causing the deaths of 77 heads of cattle. No human deaths have been attributed to chromium pollution in the case, but at least 14 local residents have been diagnosed with cancer since 2002 and many suspect their diseases were caused by contaminated drinking water.

Yao Gang, vice chairman of China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), made the remarks at a seminar here on the country's capital market.
"These days are hard times for us 'north drifters,' who had hoped to pursue our dreams in Beijing but found the new life here difficult due to surging housing prices, high living costs and severe pollution," Yang said.
Shao Xuexian, an 81-year-old asthmatic, was the only person there with a protective mask. He said he believes kicking the shuttlecock around is good for his health, so he does it even on smoggy days.
