GOA, India, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday urged the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries to cement confidence as a "complicated, severe external environment" poses challenges to the emerging-market bloc.
Work on the nearly 1.2-billion-yuan (180 million U.S. dollars) project started in 2011, 17 years after it was proposed by Chinese astronomers.
"Coming soon after the G20 meet in Hangzhou, which gave a great brainstorming opportunity to BRICS leaders, the Goa summit should be able to rejuvenate the spirit of BRICS with several new initiatives and announcements in various sectors," Singh said.
Zuma said South Africa highly appreciates the achievements of the Hangzhou Summit, especially the great attention paid to the development issues as well as the cooperation between the G20 and developing countries.
"China shall fully participate in the work of the UN's human rights mechanisms, and promote the United Nations Human Rights Council and other mechanisms to attach equal importance to economic, social and cultural rights as well as civil and political rights, and function in a fair, objective and non-selective manner," it read.
