SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The White House insisted Thursday that the CDC and the public will continue to have access to hospital data related to the COVID-19 pandemic, trying to quell concerns after the Trump administration directed a private technology firm to collect hospital data instead of the nation’s premier public health agency.Since March, the CDC has been collecting data from hospitals on bed space, COVID tests and other key metrics, like the availability of personal protective equipment, ventilators, and certain drugs.White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Thursday the CDC-run system, the National Healthcare Safety Network, was only capturing 81 percent of the nation’s hospitals. She said the new system, run by TeleTracking Technologies, will provide a more complete picture with faster reporting to the White House Coronavirus Task Force. Hospitals began sending data to the new database on Wednesday.“The intent of this is we need to make sure there is daily data given to Dr. [Deborah] Birx and others running point on Remdesivir and identifying hotspots,” McEnany said. The change comes at a time when President Trump has sparred with the CDC over school reopening guidelines, but CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said he supported the move. However, critics see the move as the latest effort by the president to politicize science. Four former CDC directors wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post this week raising concerns about the president's efforts to "undermine" the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.“I see this as a big red flag. CDC has been sidelined throughout the response,” said Dr. Richard Besser, the former acting director under President Barack Obama.Dr. Besser told ABC News the hospital data should be kept with the nation’s premier health scientists, although he acknowledged the CDC database had limitations.“The data systems have to be improved. They've been underfunded, but why set up a system that bypasses the nation's public health agency? It doesn't make sense and it concerns me about the influence of politics on what should be good public health science,” he said.McEnany said the CDC would still have access to the data along with the public, although the last update posted to the CDC website is from July 14.Hospitals report data to the federal government in different ways. In some cases, hospitals manually input information to the federal database. In other cases, hospitals report data to the state or another intermediary, which passes the information along.Scripps Health said it reports COVID-related information through an intermediary, the California Health Association, so the federal database change hasn’t affected its hospitals.Sharp Healthcare and Palomar Health said the transition to the new system has been smooth on their end.“We haven’t had any problems uploading our data,” said Palomar Health spokesman Derryl Acosta. 2914

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Superior Court is having a hard time getting potential jurors to show up for jury duty. Jury trials started again last week after a seven month break because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The lack of potential jurors reporting to the court house forced the continuation of a criminal case this week. For two weeks in a row, only about 40 people showed up for their jury duty. ABC 10News learned 900 jurors were summoned both times. ABC 10News spoke to the court's presiding judge, Lorna Alksne, who explained the court is taking all safety measures, like temperature checks, mask use at all times, Plexiglass barriers and social distancing. Alskne explains there are consequences for not showing up, like sanctions and fees, but the court isn't taking those measures yet. The judge says about 300 people did respond this week delaying their service, but the hundreds of others did not respond. Jurors are able to delay their service if they have COVID-19 safety concerns, but court officials say otherwise, people need to show up. Local defense attorney Jan Ronis says the court is doing the best they can, but he worries a smaller selection of potential jurors could impact the diversity of the jury pool. Alskne says the court will summon 2,400 people next week, instead of 1,800, in hopes of getting enough jurors for two upcoming cases. 1379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is joining the effort to make more affordable housing. The MTS Board of Directors recently greenlit a new 410-unit housing development at the Grantville trolley station. 156 of the units will be affordable and 254 will be market rate ‘student-oriented’ apartments. MTS is partnering with developers Affirmed Housing and Greystar on the project. It is estimated the total population housed on the planned trolley station property will be 1,049 people. The development would be built on top of the current parking lot. The developers will be making their own parking spaces on the site and MTS will be adding 96 replacement parking spots, according to transit officials. In a statement on the prospective parking concerns MTS wrote, “we average about 80 to 120 commuters per weekday that use the park and ride, so we are in the wheelhouse of demand.” MTS says it is currently looking into developing four more of its stations into similar housing in downtown, El Cajon and Chula Vista. Construction is set to begin June 2020 and finish by June 2022. 1116

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Valley Fire has scorched more than 17,000 acres forcing families and animals out of their homes, but during all the chaos, the Children's Nature Retreat in Alpine was able to find safe homes for most of its 143 animals. It's been a tough last few days says Executive Director Agnes Barrelet, who spotted the fire and a hillside, the minute it sparked."You can't panic. You have to worry, but you have to remain cool. If you panic, your animals are going to sense it, and it's going to be worse," said Barrelet. In all, the nature retreat had to evacuate 118 of their animal which wasn't easy."We evacuated the most fragile animals first, and then the one's that may panic. I evacuated all the horses, then the mini horses mini donkeys," Barrelet says.A majority of the animals were taken by Good Samaritan's and given places to stay at various locations in East County."They were calling us and we were determining what space they had, and how much space. We also needed to know the height of the fences," Barrelet said. "That gave us an indication of who would take which animals where."It's been a tough year for the Children's Nature Retreat, as they were forced to close earlier this year due to COVID-19, and now the fires have temporarily shut them down."The fire of course forced us to close down again. If we are closed down, we have no revenues at all," Barrelet added. 1409

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council voted 6-3 Monday on an option for regulating marijuana use in San Diego, now that it is legal.Council members chose between two options. The first would have allowed testing of marijuana and marijuana products in labs in industrial and commercial zones that prohibit residential use.The second option, which passed, will allow testing plus cultivation, distribution and production of marijuana with a permit.  The activities will be allowed in light and heavy industrial zones.San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman urged the council to enforce option one with the strictest of controls.  The Chief cited the 11 current dispensaries as a public safety concern."We've fielded 273 radio calls from those establishments so far this year, everything from violent robberies to a shooting and those calls will increase," Zimmerman said. 911
