SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Chronic pain, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety are just some of the conditions veterans carry with them long after serving our country. Now many are finding relief at a free acupuncture clinic offered at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM)."I had patients who would come to me and say, no you don't understand, I got off all my pain medication," said Christine Cronin, a full-time faculty member at PCOM.A Marine Corps veteran herself, Cronin started the Veterans Clinic in 2013."I focused my doctoral research on the treatment of combat stress-induced insomnia, and I had a lot of research that supported that we were going to have a lot of service members who were going to have a series of comorbid conditions, they were going to have a lot of different things that they were going to be working through. And they were all things acupuncture was good at," said Cronin. Students who've received over 2,000 hours of training help treat veterans at the clinic. Acupuncture helps regulates the body, promoting a natural self-healing process."Really listen to your patient and really figure out what is at stake for them, and what is going to help them lead the kind of life they want to lead," said Cronin. The clinic is open to past and present service members, as well as their family members.Veterans Clinic:Wednesday nights, 5:30 - 9:30 (veterans asked to arrive before 8 p.m.)7445 Mission Valley Rd, San Diego, CA 92108Bring military ID or proof of service affiliation 1526

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California public health officials said Friday that the state's ICU capacity dropped dangerously low, prompting warnings to take the latest regional stay-at-home order seriously. The Office of the Governor announced on social media that, "there is less than 10% ICU capacity remaining statewide. We are at a critical moment. Calling all Californians - stay home & wear a mask to save lives. All hands on deck with our health & emergency teams as we address the capacity crisis."The state also broke a single-day record for new COVID-19 cases with 35,468 cases on Friday, and reached a new high in hospitalizations, with 12,013 patients, and ICU cases, at 2,669, Los Angeles ABC affiliate KABC said.RELATED: San Diego hospitals lay out plans to distribute vaccines to staffFriday, the state's COVID-19 data showed California's ICU capacity at 9% and a seven-day average 8.4% positivity rate. The Southern California region, which includes San Diego County, currently sits at 6.2% ICU capacity. The figures, however, don't necessarily give a real-time picture of staffed beds available since the state adjusts the percentage based on the ratio of COVID-19 positive and non-coronavirus patients.California's regional stay-at-home orders covered 36 counties, or about 77% of the state, as of Friday.Friday, FDA officials are expected to approve Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine for distribution. According to the CDC, front line medical workers are among the first set to receive the vaccination. 1522

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As schools reopen with distance learning, a local nonprofit is working to bridge the digital divide during a critical time.Tammy Hershfield co-founded Computers 2 San Diego Kids 17 years ago, providing refurbished computers to low-income children. She says the local digital divide remains a big one."One in four children in San Diego don't have computer in their home, and 50 percent of those are low income families," said Hershfield. The digital divide is now even more concerning because of COVID-19, as students begin the school year with distance learning."These kids were already at a disadvantage. They were having to do their learning just in the classroom. Not they don't even have that, so we need to get them these computers," said Hershfield.Since the pandemic started, the nonprofit has refurbished and distributed nearly 18,000 computers to local kids. Dozens of volunteers and staff are working on the computers every day."We hired 14 additional staff. We're open six days a week, working 10 hours a day to get things done," said Hershfield.Families receiving the computers pick up the computers at the nonprofit's warehouse in the Miramar area. Hershfield remembers one family, a furloughed single mother of 4 with a 17-year-old daughter applying for college and loans on a phone. That family received two computers."Mom cried, and I cried. The digital disparity is real, and COVID-19 has put a on shining light on it. We can band together and help the people that need the help," said Hershfield.Hershfield says they have about 6,000 computers being worked on and need more donated computers. The nonprofit has partnered with Cox Communications to include free internet access for up to four months. 1742
