BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 200,000 local residents and tourists visited parks in Beijing on Monday as a series of celebrations were hosted to mark the first day of the Chinese lunar New Year, the city's park administration said.Festive activities kicked off at Beijing's famous parks, including the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, and the Beihai Park, on Monday to welcome the Year of the Dragon, said Chen Zhiqiang, spokesman for the Beijing Municipal Administration Center of Parks. At the Temple of Heaven, 320 costumed performers on Monday staged a show presenting the royal heaven worship ceremony in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).In the one-hour ceremony, thousands of visitors watched as the royal parade marched toward the altar where the "emperor" held a ritual to pray for peace and good harvest in the coming year.At the Summer Palace, the ancient royal garden, a traditional fair opened to public with old-fashioned shops and stands selling items and snacks popular in the old days. The Chinese New Year, which begins on Monday this year, is an important occasion for family dinners, fireworks, and a trip to temple fairs. To cope with the increase in visitors, authorities in Beijing said they have deployed seven police choppers and 910,000 order-maintaining personnel across the city to prevent the breakout of fires and stampedes.

WELLINGTON, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- Parents wanting to help their children avoid asthma and other allergies are being told to give their toys a frosty reception by sticking them in the freezer.Medical scientists in New Zealand and Taiwan have discovered that freezing children's soft toys can kill almost all house dust mites (HDMs), the microscopic bugs associated with a range of allergies, including asthma.Other effective remedies for killing HDMs, commonly found in children's soft toys, were tumble drying and washing with eucalyptus oil and detergent, the scientists from New Zealand's University of Otago and Taiwan's Changhua Christian Hospital found.HDMs were strongly associated with the development of asthma in children, and the severity of asthma was in proportion to the number of house dust mites a child was exposed to when sleeping with soft toys, said a statement from the university Monday."Children frequently sleep with their favorite toys close to their airways and this may be important for HDM-sensitized asthmatic children," said University of Otago Associate Professor Rob Siebers. The scientists tested the three different cleaning methods on 36 toys divided into three groups of 12.Freezing toys for at least 16 hours at minus 15 degrees centigrade resulted in a 95-percent reduction of HDMs, as did soaking in an emulsion of eucalyptus oil and liquid detergent for one hour before rinsing and drying.Hot tumble drying for one hour reduced mites by 89 percent, the study found."Washing and soaking with eucalyptus oil and detergent is very effective in not only reducing live mites, but also reducing house dust mite allergens, compared to freezing and tumble drying," said Siebers.Ten of the 12 toys cleaned this way showed no live mites at all.Siebers said all three methods were more effective than just washing toys, because water needed to be above 55 degrees centigrade to kill HDMs, but this usually damaged the toys."My advice for parents is to either tumble dry for one hour, or freeze the soft toy overnight, and then wash it in a cold wash to remove any allergens."Siebers said the thickness of the material used in making the toys could alter the effectiveness of the three methods. The scientists would conduct further research to determine how quickly HDMs recolonized soft toys and how often toys should be treated. The study has been published in the European journal, Paediatric Allergy and Immunology.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Supervised exercise was shown to be more effective than stenting or medication for improved walking ability in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD), according to a U.S. study reported Wednesday at the 2011 American Heart Association Scientific Sessions meeting. The research group reported that of 111 patients studied in the randomized trial, the most effective treatment proved to be supervised exercise based on the results of a treadmill test taken at baseline and again at six months. Patients who were in the supervised exercise group improved by a mean of 4.6 minutes in the treadmill test, while the group who received stents improved by a mean of 2.5 minutes. However, researchers found that self-reported quality of life measurements proved to be higher in the group that received stents, even though their ability to walk did not improve as greatly as the group that received supervised exercise rehabilitation. The findings were published in the November issue of the journal Circulation. The researchers believe that more studies are necessary, although supervised exercise may be an effective treatment recommended for PAD patients with claudication.PAD is a condition in which plaque builds up in the arteries and affects blood flow, especially to the legs. It is estimated that between 10 and 12 million people suffer from PAD in the United States. One symptom of PAD is known as claudication, a painful cramping of the leg muscles that limits the patient's ability to walk. It affects nearly 2 million people who suffer from PAD, and results in a sedentary lifestyle and poor quality of life.Current U.S. guidelines for the treatment of claudication include pharmacotherapy, supervised exercise rehabilitation and lower extremity revascularization using stents.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Facebook is close to a settlement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over the charges that the world's largest social network misled users about its use of their personal information, the U.S. media reported Friday. The proposed settlement would require Facebook to get users' consent before making "material retroactive changes" to its privacy policies, said a report from The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the talks. The agreement with the FTC is also expected to ripple much farther in the tech industry as more companies are developing programs to observe people's online behavior and profiting from the personal information, such as the target advertisements. With a current 800-million-user base worldwide, Facebook changed its user policy in late 2009 to disclose more of users' personal information without adequate notice, leading to a federal investigation along with mounting complaints online. On Thursday, two U.S. representatives asked the Palo Alto, California-based company to explain a February patent application, saying that it raises alarm bells about how the company tracks users on other websites.Outside the U.S., Facebook is also drawing criticism on its privacy policies in countries with strict privacy laws, such as Germany. On Thursday, German authorities said they are considering suing Facebook over its use of facial recognition technology. In a PBS interview aired earlier this week, Facebook's founder and chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg and chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg said the company is focused on privacy, addressing that it gives users the ability to protect their privacy.Zuckerberg said Facebook users volunteer all of their personal information on the social network, unlike other Internet giants and advertising networks that compile information "behind your back."
