SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Metropolitan Transit System trolley in San Ysidro, police said Friday.The crash happened shortly before 11:40 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Beyer Boulevard and Smythe Avenue, San Diego police Sgt. Michael Stirk said. The intersection is just northeast of the Beyer Boulevard Trolley Station.The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, Stirk said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man's body was pulled out of the water near a yacht club on Shelter Island Saturday, the San Diego Harbor Patrol said.At about 7:30 a.m. Saturday, a passerby near the Silvergate Yacht Club spotted a body floating in the water and called the harbor patrol.San Diego police were alerted and a diver removed the body of an older adult male from the water. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Masked intruders threatened a couple with guns and slashed the male victim with a knife today during a daybreak residential robbery in a Corridor-area neighborhood.The 27-year-old man and 20-year-old woman awoke at their residence in the 3200 block of Bramson Place about 6:30 a.m. to find the thieves next to their bed, pointing guns at them and demanding valuables, according to San Diego police. One of the intruders held a knife to the man's throat, Officer Robert Heims said.During the robbery, the male victim suffered several cuts, Heims said.Details on the severity of the wounds were not released.The thieves stole an unknown amount and type of items from the couple before fleeing, according to police. 738

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego woman who falsely claimed to have two employees on the payroll of her marketing company in order to obtain a CARES Act loan pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Wednesday.Nikole L. Edwards, 40, the founder of Social Savvy Marketing, admitted to submitting fake tax records and payroll information to receive a loan through the Paycheck Protection Program.The U.S. Attorney's Office said that in April and May, she applied for "tens of thousands of dollars of PPP loans" with three financial institutions, claiming in applications that Social Savvy Marketing had two employees who earned annual salaries of ,000 and ,000, when the company actually had no employees.Edwards provided fake addresses, Social Security numbers and W-2 forms for the nonexistent employees, according to prosecutors, who said that upon being rejected for a loan, she claimed, "This is a lifeline for my employees and my business and we won't survive without it."She was able to obtain a ,583 PPP loan, but will have to repay the entire amount as part of the plea agreement.Edwards entered her plea Tuesday in San Diego federal court and is slated to be sentenced Nov. 18. The charge of making false statements to the Small Business Administration carries a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment and a ,000 fine, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office."The PPP is designed to help struggling businesses meet legitimate payroll obligations, not to enrich sole proprietors engaging in outright fraud," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A local meal delivery nonprofit began sales Monday for its 15th annual Mama's Pies Thanksgiving Bake Sale, which raises funds to combat hunger among residents with illnesses like cancer and HIV. During the sale, which runs through Nov. 24, residents can order pumpkin, apple, pecan and Dutch apple pies to be delivered Nov. 27, the day before Thanksgiving. Nearly 20 local bakeries and caterers are expected to bake pies for the annual fundraiser and more pie bakers are needed, according to the organization. ``Our annual bake sale is a time-honored tradition that gives community members from around the region an opportunity to give back to our neighbors in need,'' said Mama's Kitchen Executive Director Alberto Cortes. ``Whether you're purchasing a pie, making a donation or volunteering for pie delivery, every hand up counts.'' Mama's Kitchen met its goal of 0,000 raised during last year's bake sale and aims to raise at least 0,000 during this year's six-week sale, which the organization says will fund the delivery of some 51,000 meals for residents with critical illnesses. All proceeds from the sale will directly benefit the organization's services that combat hunger.
