SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A five-vehicle pileup at a College Area intersection left two young women severely injured and sent four others drivers to the hospital, police said Thursday.The crash was reported around 9:10 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 70th Street and El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.A 63-year-old man driving a 2016 Mercedes E400 eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard suffered an unknown medical issue and slammed into the back of a 2015 Ford Fusion sitting in the northbound turn lane to 70th Street, Buttle said.The impact pushed both vehicles into the westbound lanes, where they were both struck by three vehicles -- a Nissan Rogue SUV, a BMW and a Honda Civic, the officer said. At that point, the Ford caught fire, leaving two 22-year-old women trapped inside before witnesses pulled them from the car.Both women suffered second- and third-degree burns over 70% of their bodies, along with uncontrolled internal bleeding, Buttle said. They were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries, which were considered life-threatening.The Mercedes driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, Officer Tony Martinez said.The Nissan driver, a 20-year-old woman, the BMW driver, a 63-year-old man, and the Honda driver were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, Buttle said.No details about the Honda driver were immediately available. 1427

SAN DIEGO — Three teenagers were taken into custody in three separate attempts to smuggle fentanyl across the U.S.-Mexico border, according to federal officials.U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said the incidents occurred on March 30 and 31 at the San Ysidro Port of Entry near San Diego, California.On Friday, CBP agents stopped a 17-year-old Mexican citizen. After noticing an "anomaly" on the teen's back, agents conducted a pat down and found two packages strapped to his back. The packages contained four pounds of fentanyl — a street value of 1,000.The next day, CBP agents stopped two more male teens within 10 minutes of each other: a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old. Both were found to have packages of fentanyl strapped to their backs. The two combined were carrying about nine pounds of drugs, a street value of more than 6,000.The teens in each case were arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations. The all drugs were seized by CBP officers.According to Pete Flores, the director of Field Operations for Customs and Border Protection in San Diego, Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more deadly than heroin."Please understand that no matter what you may be told, there are consequences for engaging in this type of activity, not to mention the dangers of working with transnational criminal organizations,” he said, 1383

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A military judge on Friday refused to dismiss the murder case of a decorated Navy SEAL, but found the prosecution's meddling in defense lawyer emails troubling enough to reduce the maximum penalty he faces.Capt. SAN DIEGO - A 13-year-old Tierrasanta, California boy is battling for his life after family members say he was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.A week ago Sunday, Grant Eyles started throwing up while his mother drove him and his siblings back from Los Angeles.  He quickly developed a fever, but didn't get worse until Thursday, when he lost mobility on his right side and became confused.His mother said a battery of tests pointed to bacterial meningitis, where membranes around the brain and spinal cord become inflamed, and it started with a common ailment."It was a complication essentially from a sinus infection. The infection breached the sinus cavity and went into the brain," said family friend Vanessa Bredehoft.Over the weekend, seizures forced doctors to place Grant in a medically induced coma.  Grant remains in critical condition.County health officials say many strains of bacterial meningitis do not require an alert for person-to-person prevention, and this appears to be one of those cases.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help with the family's expenses. 1107

Saguache County, Colorado is larger than the states of Delaware and Rhode Island combined.It is a valley surrounded by mountain peaks that draws people who are looking for the secluded lifestyle that rural America can offer.“Everybody knows everybody,” said Doug Peeples, who owns a grocery market in the county seat of Saguache.The town of Saguache is small, having never boasted more than 700 full-time residents in the last 30 years. The county is even more dispersed as the population density is less than two people per square mile.Then, in 2014, all of that changed once Colorado became the first state in the country to legalize recreational marijuana.“I would venture to guess we saw 2,000 to 3,000 people in overnight,” said Saguache County Sheriff Dan Warwick.“All of a sudden we had an influx of people that were out-of-towners,” added Peeples.Located in the southern part of Colorado, the county became a destination for people from neighboring states who wanted to use the weed recreationally, but particularly those who wanted to start grow operations before returning the product back to their home state-- something that is illegal.“With only six deputies, how do you try and catch these bad actors?” said Warwick. “You just hope to come across it.”The influx led to squalor and crime as sheds laid abandoned after people would use them for growing marijuana before skipping town once they harvested.“You’d see people come in and they would grow on a piece of property that they leased for a short period of time,” said Warwick. “They would leave all their trash and junk everywhere and then just pack up and leave.”It became a divisive issue in the county as full-time residents would be left to deal with the mess.“For a while, this place was the Wild Wild West,” said county commissioner Jason Anderson.Anderson, along with the rest of the county commissioners, worked to find a solution by passing an excise tax in 2016 that would give them 5 percent of the profits when legal growers would sell to retailers.In theory, the legislation would allow the county to benefit from something that had caused so much turbulence as the commissioners allocated money to go towards schools, enforcement, and other areas that needed improvement, but it started off slow.“The first year [of the tax] we only saw ,000, again, because the legal operations weren’t up and running yet,” said Anderson.Gradually, however, that tax money started to increase.
