ADRIAN, Mich. -- Police are investigating after an 85-year-old man was stabbed to death at a Meijer store in Michigan Wednesday afternoon. The suspect was arrested after a person with a concealed pistol license (CPL) intervened and held him at gunpoint until police arrived.The deadly incident happened around 12:30 p.m. Much of the details surrounding the incident are still being investigated.However, police say the victim was stabbed multiple times in the head and neck, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) announced that they agreed with United Airlines not to furlough any of its pilots.In a press statement, the ALPA said the agreement keeps all 13,000 pilots employed and cancels the 2,850 previously announced layoffs.The planned layoffs were to take place Thursday when the CARES Act pandemic payroll support expired, USA reported.The Cares Act provided a billion bailout to keep US airlines afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic.Lawmakers are looking to extend the program by introducing a new bill to protect workers' jobs until March 31.Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) introduced the Air Carrier Worker Support Extension Act of 2020 last week."The CARES Act successfully saved thousands of jobs that support the airline industry and provided these businesses with some breathing space after the drastic drop in air travel caused by the COVID-19 pandemic," said Wicker in a press release. "However, the market has not turned around as much as we had hoped, and additional relief is needed to prevent more than 60,000 aviation sector employees from losing their jobs beginning October 1. This legislation would extend the critical Payroll Support Program to provide support for passenger air carriers, cargo air carriers, and aviation contractors. It would also preserve our nationwide service by requiring airlines to maintain routes as a condition for receiving assistance. Maintaining a strong national air transportation system is critical for today's economy and the continued recovery."The ALPA says the deal also offers pilots over the age of 50 with 10 years of experience second round of first separation options. Airports are finding new ways to make traveling safe for passengers during the COVID-19 pandemic. From mask requirements to high-tech cleaning solutions and physical distancing campaigns, they want travelers to feel safe the next time they fly. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is testing technology that could detect the virus long before a person boards their plane. They're running a 12-week pilot program with three thermal imaging cameras aimed at detecting elevated temperatures in passengers. Justin Erbacci is the CEO of Los Angeles World Airport (LAWA), the governing body for LAX and Van Nuys Airports. He says LAX is the first airport to test this kind of technology at a terminal entrance. "Certainly, as we ramp up, we have to have a process that allows passengers just to flow in," said Erbacci. Erbacci says the aviation industry has never experienced a crisis of this magnitude."The closest that I experienced was 9/11, of course. And that was a terrible, terrible time. But it was a much shorter period, and the impacts were not as severe. Now, we are in a situation where the impacts are significantly greater and the duration is much longer," said Erbacci. Medical staff monitors the thermal imaging cameras, looking for passengers with a fever of 100.4 or higher. If an elevated temperature is detected, the passenger is asked to take a voluntary second screening with a thermometer, to validate the accuracy of the thermal cameras. If a passenger is confirmed to have a fever, they're given information about the risk but are not turned away. However, they could face another screening by their airline, which has the final say on whether they fly.Medical assistant Genevie Guillen says passengers have so far been fully cooperative."Everyone is a bit scared, so I think they'd rather take precautions than take the chance of flying," said Guillen. Only deployed for a week, the screenings have not yet detected anyone with a fever, but there have been a few false positives. The airport is hoping more time and data will provide a clearer picture of the camera's accuracy. Critics of the technology say even if it's accurate, it can't spot asymptomatic passengers. And some people who show other symptoms never get a fever at all. From February 24 to April 21, the CDC screened approximately 268,000 returning travelers, discovering only 14 COVID-19 cases."These temperature checks are not meant to be the single solution that it is going to make everybody safe. It's just one layer of protection, in addition to many others," said Erbacci.The cameras being tested at LAX are on loan at no charge, but outfitting the entire airport with them would cost in the millions; it's an investment LAX hopes the government will help fund.Apart from giving every passenger a COVID test, Erbacci says it's the best way to detect the virus. But to be truly effective, he says it must be done nationwide to ensure arriving passengers have also been screened."If we can remove, even if it's only one-third or two-thirds of the people that actually have the virus, you're still stopping those people from coming in," said Erbacci. 3153

(KGTV) - The Alpine Union School District has become one of the first local school districts to begin mandatory testing for all staff members.In partnership with Cal Fire, the pre-K to 8 school district rolled out drive-thru COVID-19 testing on Wednesday."The number that came out was beyond what we expected. It was a steady flow of staff all day long," said District Superintendent Rich Newman.So far, 65% of all staff -- about 130 employees -- have gotten a test, with results due back within two to five days."We’ve gone one step beyond most districts," said Newman.Newman says while the state requires districts test half their staff every month during in-person learning, his school district expects to test all of its staff every month. The drive-thru testing events will be held every two weeks."We want to make sure we can stay open for our students," said Newman.The testing is one component of a detailed in-school learning plan, which includes plexiglass dividers on every student desk and a thorough cleaning regimen."I had a meeting with the principals and it was very emotional, because they felt all the hard work paid off," said Newman.As for the testing, Newman says the response from parents and staff has been positive."The number one response from staff has been 'Thank you for setting this up quickly,'" said Newman.Newman hopes the testing track down asymptomatic cases and provide some peace of mind."If our staff feels safe, healthy, and taken care of, they can focus on teaching and learning with our students," said Newman.Newman says each class has assigned restrooms and outdoor spaces that will help officials with tracing if an outbreak should develop. 1706
