NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police in National City have arrested two suspects following a deadly 2015 shooting. According to the National City Police Department, Roger Hernandez, 30, and Luis Karam-Solis, 29, were arrested for the murder of Juan Munoz. The shooting happened in October of 2015. According to police, 18-year-old Munoz and his 17-year-old passenger drove to the 1600 block of Prospect Street after being followed by two men in a silver Nissan Altima. After the victims stopped, a Hispanic man approached their vehicle and fired several rounds. Munoz died on his way to the hospital and the 17-year-old passenger was shot in his thigh. NATIONAL CITY (CNS) -  A pedestrian was struck by multiple vehicles and killed while attempting to cross an Interstate 5 off-ramp in National City, authorities said Friday.The crash happened shortly before 8:25 p.m. Thursday on the Civic Center Drive off-ramp from southbound Interstate 5, California Highway Patrol Officer Jake Sanchez said.A man was attempting to cross the off-ramp from an unknown direction when he walked directly into the path of a Toyota Rav4 driven by a 33-year-old woman, Sanchez said. The man was then struck by two other vehicles, he said.The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene, Sanchez said. 652

Moderna announced Thursday they have started giving teenagers their COVID-19 vaccine as part of their study on how the vaccine works in those under 18.Pfizer, the other vaccine maker with an emergency use request for their COVID-19 vaccine in adults before the FDA, started including teens in their trial in October.In the Moderna’s press release, they say the Phase 2/3 study of the mRNA vaccine is now underway and is being conducted on children between the ages of 12 and 18.“We are pleased to begin this Phase 2/3 study of mRNA-1273 in healthy adolescents in the U.S. Our goal is to generate data in the spring of 2021 that will support the use of mRNA-1273 in adolescents in advance of the 2021 school year,” said Stéphane Bancel, Chief Executive Officer of Moderna in a company statement. “We hope we will be able to provide a safe vaccine to provide protection to adolescents so they can return to school in a normal setting.”The Phase 2/3 study from Moderna is being done to test the safety and immunogenicity of the two-dose vaccine they submitted to the FDA for emergency use approval last month.They plan to enroll about 3,000 teenagers in the U.S. in the trial, with each receiving either a placebo or the vaccine in two doses, 28 days apart. 1262

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A National City road was drenched Sunday morning after police say a woman slammed into a fire hydrant, sending water spewing into the air. The crash happened on the 200 block of Palm Avenue around 3 a.m. According to police, the woman lost control of her car and crashed into the hydrant. She was later taken away in handcuffs, but it’s unclear at this time if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. 446

MIRAMAR, Calif. (KGTV) - A Marine was honored Thursday after disarming a gunman in the Chesterton neighborhood the week prior.Sgt. Jake McClung received the Navy Commendation Medal at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. According to the Navy and Marines Awards Manual, "It may be awarded to any service member who distinguishes themselves by heroic or meritorious achievement."San Diego Police got a call at 6:18 p.m. on June 4 of a man armed with a rifle, pointing it at families and hitting cars with the gun near Linda Vista Rd. and Wheatley St.McClung was driving through his neighborhood when he saw the man, identified as a Navy sailor in the police report, holding a rifle and threw a firecracker at his vehicle.Sgt. McClung said he parked in his driveway and watched the man walk into the street and point his rifle at cars. McClung said the man's wife and toddler came out to try and talk with him and were crying. McClung said the man pointed the rifle at his family and that's when McClung stepped between the gunman and the family to try and de-escalate the situation.He said the man was acting erratically and that gave the man's wife and child a chance to get inside. McClung said he teamed up with the neighborhood security guard and walked up to the man, trying to calm him.McClung said when he saw an opening he reached for the rifle and was able to disarm him, but he took a couple punches to the face, breaking his nose. McClung said he and the security guard wrestled the sailor to the ground and handcuffed him before police arrived."I don't know if he had PTSD of not, but if he was suicidal I also wanted to protect him, because he had a gun, he was in the middle of the street. The security guard later told me he was about to shoot him, so if that would have happened, it would have cost his life too. Even though he was obviously in the wrong, we have to take care of our own and sometimes taking care of our own means protecting them from themselves," McClung said.The man was arrested on several felony charges, including felony vandalism, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of an illegal assault weapon, possession of a large capacity magazine. He has since bailed out, according to police.The struggle between McClung and the man happened steps away from a childcare facility and an elementary school that were set to open the next day. 2378
