Walking down the halls of Mt. Jordan Middle School in Sandy, Utah, Dr. Matt Watts is everything you would expect a junior high school principal to be.Watts is a bit light-hearted.“Hey dude, how was the birthday?” Watts asked a passing student.However, he is always thinking of the well-being of his students.“Whoa guys, please be careful,” he said as he passed a couple of boys roughhousing in the halls.This year, the safety of students all over the country looks different than past school years.“If you walk around the school, you’ll see we’ve got arrows on the floors, signs up everything and even a maximum occupancy in bathrooms,” Watts said.Of course, there is also the mandatory school staple: masks.“That was probably one of the biggest things I was worried about, but the kids have done a fantastic job.”Mt. Jordan Middle school is one of the few schools in the country operating on a normal schedule of five days a week and in-person learning. However, it comes with its challenges.“One of the challenging things has been for teachers to find the balance with physical distancing and still taking care of the kids and kid’s social emotional needs,” Watts said.Teachers like Lindsay Maxfield are being tasked with the delicate balance of keeping their kids on track educationally, while being sensitive to the uncertainty of it all.“The (students) have been able to have a lot of really good discussion, which at the beginning of the year with their masks they were a lot quieter,” teacher Lindsay Maxfield said. “I’ve noticed they’re getting more comfortable speaking out with their masks. That has been a really cool thing to see.”Maxfield knows that at any moment, the teaching model could change and move to an online curriculum.“I didn’t think through all the online different tech issues that sometimes you need to teach the students,” Maxfield said. “Sometimes, we assume that they know how to do everything because they’re so techy and that kind of thing.”As the temperatures start to drop, the possibility of more cases hangs in the air.“A concern now is that it’s getting cold,” Watts said. “We’ve been letting kids eat outside so they can be distant and have that fresh air and now, but the cold is making us rethink what the cafeteria is going to look like.”For now, the school is beating the odds with very few cases of COVID-19.“When we have had to send some kids home, that gets tough because they want to be here,” Watts said.Lifelong educators dealing with a once-in-a-ifetime test, committed to keeping their doors open for as long as possible. 2580

As they add new music programs, the goal is to get an instrument in the hand of every student. Weirather said.North Coast Church heard about the instrument drive and asked their worshipers to help, and they delivered.“They filled an entire room. WARREN, Michigan — Police are looking for thieves who stole nine brand new Dodge Ram pickup trucks in a Michigan town.The vehicles were stolen just before 4 a.m. local time Thursday. They were taken from the storage lot at the truck plant in Warren.Police say the trucks were fresh off the assembly line and had not been titled yet.The trucks are worth more than ,000 each. Authorities have not said whether there are suspects or if they have an idea of where the trucks may be.  505

VISTA (CNS) - A 24-year-old man was behind bars today for reportedly crashing his car into a freeway work zone in the far northern reaches of San Diego County while drunk, injuring himself along with two construction crew members.Ross Rodgers, 24, was headed south on Interstate 15 near Mission Road in the unincorporated Rainbow community about 10:50 p.m.Sunday when his 2008 Toyota Prius veered over traffic cones and entered the closure area, where it hit the back end of a stationary 2008 Ford F-250, according to the California Highway Patrol.A worker behind the wheel of the pickup truck and a second one on foot nearby suffered apparently minor injuries in the wreck.Medics took the two men, ages 30 and 36, to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido for evaluations, CHP Officer Kevin Smale said. Rodgers was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and transported to the same hospital for treatment of a broken bone in his right foot.Upon his release from medical care, the San Diego resident was booked into the county jail in Vista on suspicion of felony DUI.The crash led to intermittent closures of parts of the freeway in the area until about 5 a.m., Smale said. 1186

WASHINGTON — The government’s cybersecurity agency is expressing increased alarm about a hack of computer systems in the U.S. and around the globe that officials suspect was carried out by Russia.The cybersecurity unit of the Department of Homeland Security says the hack “poses a grave risk” to the U.S. government and state and local governments as well as critical infrastructure and private business.The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency announced the SolarWinds Orion vulnerability that was disclosed this week as the compromised piece of software, was not the only way that hackers were able to get into government agencies, private companies and critical infrastructures over the last several months."CISA has determined that this threat poses a grave risk to the Federal Government and state, local, tribal, and territorial governments as well as critical infrastructure entities and other private sector organizations," the alert issued by the agency said. "CISA expects that removing this threat actor from compromised environments will be highly complex and challenging for organizations."The U.S. Energy Department is the latest government unit to announce they had systems compromised in the hack.The department says the impact of the hack appears to be “isolated to business networks” and "has not impacted the mission essential national security functions of the Department, including the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)," which manages the country’s stockpile of nuclear weapons.It’s not just government agencies, Microsoft is reporting in a blog post more than 40 customers around the world appear to have been targeted in the hack.The hack creates a fresh foreign policy problem for President Donald Trump in his final days in office.President Trump has not made public comments regarding the hack, or the government’s response to Russia or whoever may be responsible.
