Ten-year-old D'Mya Newton was ecstatic when she found out she'd be able to play basketball this summer."She was in the garage all day just putting up shots," said Brittney English, D'Mya's mom.However, after playing several games in mid-June in a suburb of Kansas City, she began to feel sick."Once we took her to the hospital, they gave her an IV of saline solution and Motrin," English said.Her mom said Newton has some health issues, and wanted to take her to the hospital as her fever rose.Days later, doctors told English her daughter tested positive for COVID-19.41 Action News spoke with English over Zoom as the family is in quarantine. She said she believes her daughter got the virus from the KC Premiere Basketball tournament."She was feeling fine before we attended the basketball game on Sunday," English said. "She is the one that is always cleaning her hands, washing her hands and using the hand sanitizer."The Platte County Health Department said it alerted families that had close contact with the player who tested positive. The department also said it worked with the tournament director to conduct contact tracing.The director said four teams were alerted within hours of knowing about the positive COVID-19 case.Doctors said it is dangerous when parents send their kids back to the court."They are absolutely putting their kids at risk. You have to weigh the risk versus the benefit. The benefit is up to the parent and up to the kid," said Dr. Simon Clark, an emergency physician at Overland Park Regional. "Of course they want to get back to action and sports. The risk is definitely there."A question many parents have is if they should let their kids play or keep them at home."I can't really advise whether or not it's a good idea. I think the risk is there. I kind of have to defer to the local health department's experts. I can just say the risk is there," Clark said.D'Mya's mom wants parents to take extra precautions when letting kids go back to playing their favorite sport."Just looking at the signs when they come home. If they are tired, if they are fatigued or anything like that, just be aware," English said.D'Mya lives in Wyandotte County, Kansas. Supporters of President Donald Trump flooded roadways Sunday in New York and New Jersey, shutting down traffic on expressways and bridges.With just days to go before the election, caravans of cars flying Trump flags caused a traffic jam on the Garden State Parkway around Cheesequake and Lakewood. Police said the demonstration caused a 5-mile backup on the highway.In New York, videoes showed parked vehicles filled with Trump supporters on the Mario Cuomo Bridge. The battle over the sale of the Confederate flag at the Lorain County Fair reached yet another peak after a vandal posted a Confederate flag on a billboard protesting its sale.The billboard is one of three purchased by the Fair Minded Coalition of Lorain County which urges residents to "say no" to the sale of the Confederate flag at the fair. Coalition member Jeanine Donaldson said she believes someone posting the flag on a coalition billboard is further proof of how it divides a community."To my family and other African-Americans it symbolizes hate, torture and terror," Donaldson said. "It's a right and wrong situation in the year 2018.""No less than Governor John Kasich was the one who recommended that the flag come down for the state fair, and he did it because it was the right thing to do," she saidLorain City Councilman Angel Arroyo said the Lorain County Fair Board needs to finally ban the sale of the Confederate flag because it doesn't represent Ohio or his community."It's a sign of ignorance and hatred of people in our community," Arroyo said."It's frustrating putting this flag on the billboard.  It's a sign of disrespect and truly shows the true colors of racism and hatred."But Lorain County Fair Board President Kim Meyers says the Confederate flag has been sold at the fair for 30 years. Currently, it's being sold by one vendor who is selling the flag as part of a wide variety of Civil War memorabilia.Meyers said to restrict the sale of the flag would be a violation of First Amendment rights."Here at the fair, probably 99 percent of the feedback that we received has been in favor of the fair allowing for the sale," Meyers said."The Ohio Fair Managers conference back in 2016 voted unanimously, there were 88 counties and seven independent fairs, that voted to allow the sale of that."Still, Donaldson said her group will continue to protest, and said more efforts to stop the sale of the Confederate flag at the fair will be unveiled in the coming months."We're not going away," Donaldson said."This is not about politics, it's just the right thing to do."    2159
