SALT LAKE CITY — A pair of best friends who met while studying at Utah Valley University are taking a long, unique journey to deliver a message of peace.James Alan Thompson of Sandy and his friend Paul T. Chavez are walking across the United States.Their journey began on June 24 in San Francisco. They hope to complete the 3,000-mile journey in Washington, D.C., by December.They were inspired to make the trek after seeing civil unrest and protests erupt across the country.“What is it we can do to make an impact, instead of just complaining about what’s going on,” Thompson said. “Talk to people in person and talk to them about how they have received kindness in their lives."The friends hope that by connecting with individuals from all walks of life and from all over the country, they can show there is much more that unites people than divides.“It’s touching one life at a time, one day at a time,” Chavez said. “We are opening up a space for this conversation about peace.”“There are good people in this country. This country is not as divided as some think it is,” Thompson said.Thompson and Chavez are walking about 20 miles per day. They expect to pass through Utah sometime in August.“Once we reach Salt Lake City we will do a day of kindness where we bring people together. SAN DIEGO — Some parents are keeping their children out of school Tuesday to protest the San Diego Unified School District’s sex education curriculum.A group of parents say the district’s Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP) is too graphic and not age-appropriate for their students, and they are urging district officials to eliminate the program.The parents have taken their concerns to the district’s School Board, but they said board members refuse to replace the curriculum.District officials said students can opt out of the course, but parents want the images they consider graphic gone.Ashley Bever, a substitute teacher who is organizing the one-day protest, said she was surprised to see all of the materials student had access to.“I thought a 6th grade teacher did not write this. Where it did come from? Why is it so explicit? SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 28-year-old man who appeared to suffer some type of medical emergency and passed out after fighting with deputies arresting him at a North County convenience store last week died at a hospital, authorities reported Wednesday.Marco Napoles Rosales of El Monte was pronounced brain-dead Tuesday, six days after his violent encounter with law enforcement personnel, according to sheriff's officials. A ruling on his cause of death remains on hold pending an autopsy.The events that led to Rosales' confrontation with law enforcement personnel began about 4:30 a.m. last Thursday, when a 911 caller reported that he had been acting strangely in a Circle K market on state Route 76 in Fallbrook, seemed to be "under the influence of drugs" and was refusing to leave the business, Lt. Rich Williams said.RELATED: San Diego deputy, suspect hospitalized after violent confrontationEight deputies arrived a short time later, contacted the Los Angeles-area resident and tried to evaluate him, at which point he allegedly became belligerent.During an ensuing struggle, the patrol personnel shocked Rosales with an electric stun gun, and he bit one of them on the hand, Williams said.The deputies were able to get Rosales into restraints after two men who saw what was happening while driving by hurried over and helped subdue him.A short time later, while being taken to a hospital for an examination, the suspect experienced apparent medical distress and lost consciousness.When informed that Rosales was beyond recovery, his family decided to keep him on life support for organ-donation purposes, the lieutenant said. 1636

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 17-year-old girl was shot Tuesday morning during an argument inside a Rolando apartment, San Diego police said.Shortly after 12:35 a.m., a security guard reported hearing an argument followed by a gunshot inside of an apartment in the 4700 block of Seminole Drive, near Stanley Avenue off 63rd Street and El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims said.The security guard also reported seeing people run away after the shooting, Heims said. Officers responded to the scene and found that a 17-year-old girl had been shot in the left neck/jaw area.The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of her injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, the officer said.A detailed suspect description was not immediately available. 782

SAN DIEGO - A crash into a fire hydrant sent a geyser of water 50 feet in the air and flooded homes in Chollas Creek Sunday afternoon, witnesses said.The accident happened around 2 p.m. when witnesses said a U-Haul backed into a fire hydrant near the 5000 block of University Avenue. The hydrant broke, sending water shooting into the air.A home, several cars and some apartments nearby were flooded. The water was shut off about 45 minutes after it started, witnesses said.There is no damage estimate at this time. 523
