BEIJING, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Some 600,000 people visited graveyards in the suburbs of Chinese capital Beijing on Friday, about triple last year's figure of 189,000, according to official statistics.     On Dec. 16, the State Council (cabinet) revised the nation's official holiday schedule to add three traditional festivals -- Qingming, Duanwu and Zhongqiu -- in response to public calls. The Memorial Hall of the Nanjing Massacre received numerous domestic visitors -- and many from Japan.     "We, from the aggressor side of the war, want to show regret to the victims on this special day," said one of the Japanese visitors.     In December 1937, invading Japanese troops slaughtered 300,000 Chinese soldiers and civilians in the city, which was then the national capital. Many of the bodies were never properly interred, and many of the Chinese visiting the memorial on Friday have no graves to visit.     Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province in east China, unveiled a monument ln honor of the thousands of firefighters died on duty since 1949. It is the first such monument in the country.

He or she should be fair-minded and above all, love this country, said Wen during his visit to the China University of Political Science and Law on China's Youth Day.     During his trip, Wen first went to the first floor of the university's library, which boasts the country's largest collection of modern law books. Here Wen met senior experts and professors and talked with them about the law history.     "We will better implement the policy of 'administration according to Law'", said Wen, when receiving a collection of law history books from professor Zhang Jinfan, who spent 19 years with some 10 professors to compile these books.     Wen then stepped into the second floor of the library, where he joined the students in the reading room and exchanged views on legal system building.     When asked by Wang Tuo, a PhD candidate majoring in Criminal Law, about his expectations for the concept of "Ruling the Country by Law", Wen said the concept served as a basis for developing economy and maintaining social harmony     To promote democracy, improve the legal system, and rule the country by law is not only a national strategy, but also serves to safeguard the personal rights and freedom of every citizen, he said. BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping called for a high-level Beijing Olympics by providing a secure environment, good media services and strict anti-doping work for the Games.     The preparatory work for next month's Olympics were effective, and the preparation for security, media services and doping inspection had achieved a first-class level worldwide, Xi said here on Monday when touring the Games' command center and several of the venues.     Xi, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, thought highly of the Beijing security work, saying the capital had laid a good foundation for the safety work.     He praised the human-orientated facilities and equipment in the media village. HAIKOU, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Higos, the 17th tropical storm of the year, landed in China's southernmost Hainan Province Friday evening, local observatory said.     Higos landed at 10:15 p.m. in Longlou Town, Wenchang City, 19.6 degrees north latitude and 111.0 degrees east longitude. The wind speed at the eye of the storm was 18 meters per second, according to the Hainan Provincial Meteorological Observatory.     It was forecast to weaken and move northwest towards the coastal areas of western Guangdong Province. Delayed trucks are parked at the Xiuying port in Haikou, capital of south China's Hainan Province Oct. 3, 2008, due to the suspension of ferry service.In total, 24,115 fishing boats in the province had returned to port and coastal fisheries staff had gone home. All recreational sporting activities on the air or sea were also suspended on Friday, said Lin Mingzhong, Hainan Provincial Office for Flood, Wind and Drought Control deputy director.     He predicted Higos would have minor impact on the island as the rainfall was expected to be around 100 mm. It was likely to affect some small reservoirs as their current water level was high.     Higos was formed on Tuesday in the Pacific Ocean, coming on the heels of tropical storms Jangmi and Hagupit, which combined had killed about 20 people in China.
