VISTA (CNS) - A man who fired a BB gun at an Oceanside business that had put up a sign supporting the Black Lives Matter movement pleaded guilty today to charges of violating civil rights by damaging property and vandalism.Steve Soto, 23, of Carlsbad, is slated to be sentenced Sept. 28 to one year in county jail stemming from the June 4 shooting that shattered a window at Bliss Tea & Treats.Oceanside police Sgt. John McKean said Soto drove by the business, then fired a BB gun out the window of his vehicle.The business had a sign in the window at the time that read: "Black owned, we stand with you," McKean said.The sergeant said surveillance video helped detectives identify the vehicle used in the crime, leading to Soto's arrest on July 15.He also pleaded guilty to an assault charge related to a May 28 incident involving a male victim and a misdemeanor vandalism count related to an unspecified July 4 incident.He was facing a hate crime allegation stemming from the Bliss Tea & Treats shooting and other misdemeanor charges of discharging a BB gun in a grossly negligent manner stemming from unspecified incidents occurring in June and July, but those counts were dismissed as part of the plea agreement. 1232

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she is ordering the removal from the Capitol of portraits honoring four previous House speakers who served in the Confederacy.In a letter Thursday to the House clerk, Pelosi directed the immediate removal of portraits depicting these former speakers: Robert Hunter of Virginia, James Orr of South Carolina, and Howell Cobb and Charles Crisp, both of Georgia.Pelosi says the House was unaware of the portraits until an inventory was taken of the chamber’s statues.“We didn't know about this until we were taking inventory of the statues,” she said. “And the curator told us that there were four paintings of speakers in that and the Capitol of the United States four speakers who had served in the Confederacy.”Pelosi says that "there is no room in the hallowed halls of Congress or in any place of honor for memorializing men who embody the violent bigotry and grotesque racism of the Confederacy.″Pelosi says the portraits will be taken down in observance of Juneteenth, a June 19 holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S. 1094

"We made major headway toward hammering out a targeted pandemic relief package that would be able to pass both chambers with bipartisan majorities."The Senate majority leader said money is needed not only for the American people suffering from the economic fallout caused by the pandemic, but to help re-up the Payment Protection Program and for vaccine distribution.“Congressional leaders on both sides are going to keep working until we get it done,” McConnell said.The Washington Post and Politico report the package would amount to nearly 0 billion in relief and may include a new round of stimulus checks, though the dollar amount for the possible direct payments isn’t yet known.The package would reportedly exclude aid for state and local governments, as well as leave out liability protections. While it appears Pelosi and the eSalon may have violated the city’s order on Monday, a spokesperson for Pelosi claimed that the speaker did not violate the city’s mandate.In the video, Pelosi is seen without a mask over her mouth or nose while inside the salon.“The Speaker always wears a mask and complies with local COVID requirements. This business offered for the Speaker to come in on Monday and told her they were allowed by the city to have one customer at a time in the business.
