SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The chief executive of a California technology company has resigned after the release of a video showing him using vulgar and racist language toward an Asian family at a restaurant. KPIX-TV reports Solid8 CEO Michael Lofthouse resigned from the San Francisco Bay Area tech startup Saturday. Lofthouse issued a statement announcing his departure from Solid8 in which he apologizes and says he plans to enroll in an anti-racist program. SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in Northern California say a 70-year-old man has died in one of the three giant wildfires burning around the San Francisco Bay Area. The man had been reported missing and authorities used a helicopter to reach the location where they found him in the rural community of Last Chance in Santa Cruz County. The area was under an evacuation order and Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Chris Clark said it was a stark reminder of the need for residents to leave the area. The fatality was the seventh fire death in the state in the last week that has seen 650 wildfires across California, many of them sparked by lightning strikes. 693

SEATTLE, Washington — Calling all Harry Potter fans: Seattle, Washington’s coolest dad has created a wizarding world and we got a look inside this real-life version of Diagon Alley before it began its journey to a new home to help children.Johnathan Chambers said his kids always wanted him to create something special for Halloween."I posed a question to my girls, 'What can we do for Halloween or Christmas?' It was in the summer, to like go big. And one of them said, 'Diagon Alley'," he said.Chambers was fully committed to making this the best Diagon Alley fans had ever seen, but he had to leave his job to accomplish this project.  He decided to create the real-life Diagon Alley in his driveway. Chambers has been a creative director for more than 20 years and focusing on the details was his forte.At this Diagon Alley, muggles are allowed in. They walk into a magical filled with an assortment of shops and items on Hogwarts'  supply list. There is Olivander’s Wand Shop, Eyelops' Owl Emporium, Madam Malkin’s Robes for all Occasions and Flourish and Blotts where students buy their school books.Once word got out about the Diagon Alley Project, fans from around the world flocked to see this wizarding world in Washington.“They walk in the door and some of them have burst into tears. It’s been incredible," Chambers said.From overzealous screams, hysterical cries and a few marriage proposals, the Diagon Alley Project became a bigger success than Chambers ever imagined.As thousands of muggles roamed through their fantastical getaway, Chambers and his family realized they had an opportunity to make an even bigger difference. They decided to collect donations from visitors to raise money for cancer research. SANA DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - NOAA has issued a La Nina Watch, which means a dry winter and longer fire season are possible this year for Southern California.This stems from colder water along the equator in the Pacific which has a domino effect on other parts of the world, including an increased risk of hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean due to weaker winds and also higher chances for a dry winter over Southern California because of a lack of moisture. A lack of winter rain means the fire season could be longer than usual.“So that means we enter the fall critically dry and then when you add a La Nina on top of that, it adds concern because we could likely go longer into the winter without seeing significant or beneficial rain,” said meteorologist Alex Tardy from the National Weather Service’s San Diego office.He said it’s not quite black and white though. According to the NOAA, there's about a 50% to 55% chance of a La Nina occurring this year, which will be monitored as the winter season approaches. Also, in the past 10-15 years, La Nina years and El Nino years have proven to be not as extreme as previously thought. He said while the watch has been issues and a dry winter is possible, it’s still being monitored.“It’s not time to panic but it is time to think and bring it back on your radar that fire weather is a major concern in Southern California,” he said. 1387

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) – Authorities have identified the victim and suspect after a man and a woman were found dead in a San Marcos home Monday. The Medical Examiner identified the victim as Michelle Johnson, 43, as the victim and Tiko Leal, 49, as the suspect. Deputies were called to the home on the 1000 block of Lanza Court early Monday morning after receiving reports of unknown trouble. Neighbors told deputies that two children, ages 10 and 11, were inside the home and afraid to come out. After entering the home, Johnson and Leal were found unresponsive with trauma to their bodies, according to the department.
