BEIJING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has called for efforts to promote development in the country's western regions while transforming the economic growth pattern.Li made the remarks during his visit to southwestern Yunnan Province from May 31 to June 2, where he met villagers, entrepreneurs and local officials. He said the western regions must seize the opportunity of economic structural adjustment at home and abroad, innovate in development, and promote sound and fast economic and social development while accelerating transformation of the economic growth pattern. The western regions should exert their comparative advantages in resources to encourage industrial upgrading and boost economic development with local characteristics, Li said.Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (2nd, L) talks with villagers of Luhai New Village, in Xishan District of Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, June 1, 2010.He said the western regions should further open up to the outside world and adapt to the trend of industrial transfer.Great importance should be attached to guarantee people's basic livelihoods, and help meet people's needs in education, employment, health care, housing and the environment, he said.Li also stressed efforts to promote technology progress, social harmony, poverty alleviation and drought control.

BEIJING, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Growth in China's consumer price index (CPI) is likely to see a reverse "V" shape this year and the possibility of a serious inflation is easing, said Ha Jiming, chief economist at the China International Capital Corp. (CICC).Speaking at an investor education activity in Beijing Saturday, Ha expected China's CPI to increase 3.2 percent in May from a year earlier, and said the CPI annual growth rate would even peak at 4 percent in June and July. The country's CPI rose 2.4 percent year on year in March and the growth for April accelerated to 2.8 percent, according to statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics. The pick-up in CPI growth was a result of lower comparison base last year and the risk for a serious inflation in short term was defusing because both the global commodity prices and domestic meat and vegetable prices were falling, he said.In China, food prices accounted for one third of the CPI weight. The CICC has cut its estimate for China's economic growth this year to 9.5 percent from 10.5 percent, he said.Interest rate hikes would be unlikely this year as growth in consumer prices was expected to fall in the second half, he said.

HONG KONG, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong's leading charity donor, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said Sunday it had donated another 16.3 million HK dollars (2.1 million U.S. dollars) for earthquake-hit area in northwestern China's Qinghai province to help disaster relief work.Together with the emergency donation of 2 million HK dollars made earlier, the Jockey Club contributed over 18.3 million HK dollars to support relief work for victims of the 7.1-magnitude earthquake, which hit the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in Qinghai on April 14.In a press release, the Jockey club said it achieved a net operating surplus of 15.36 million HK dollars on April 21 at the Happy Valley race meeting. All money had been passed to the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs for earthquake relief work.Chairman of the Jockey club, John C C Chan, said horse racing in Hong Kong not only is a form of entertainment, but is also a charitable undertaking which serves the people of Hong Kong and has a far-reaching significance to the community."We felt that by going ahead with our race meeting on April 21 and donating the net operating surplus to help Qinghai earthquake victims, we would be able to give strong support to the relief efforts at the same time as maintaining a stable contribution to the public purse," he said.In addition, the Jockey Club launched a public fund-raising drive between April 21 and 25. This likewise attracted a huge response, raising a total of 943,284 HK dollars, according to the statement.Chan said he hoped the earthquake victims could overcome their hard times soon and be able to rebuild their homeland with blessings and support from all over the country.Following the Yushu earthquake, the HK Jockey Club made an immediate donation of 2 million HK dollars to support relief work in the stricken area, passing the donation to the Red Cross Society of China via the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong. The Yushu earthquake killed at least 2,200 people and left more than 100,000 homeless.Founded in 1884, the HK Jockey Club has become one of Hong Kong 's best known organizations, providing sporting entertainment as well as being the city's major non-government community benefactor. Now it donates more than 1 billion HK dollars a year to charitable and community projects. (one U.S. dollar equals to 7.755 HK dollars)

BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- China's recent measures to cool the red-hot property market had curbed excessive home price rises in some cities, a senior government official said Friday during an online discussion with Chinese netizens.Qi Ji, vice minister of housing and urban-rural development, said the reaction to the tightening measures was positive -- after local governments implemented the measures in line with the central government's policy. In April, the Chinese government introduced a raft of tough measures to rein in soaring home prices which grew a record 11.7 percent from a year earlier in March. The measures included more restrictive down-payment requirements, higher loan rates, a ban on lending for third home purchases and tighter scrutiny of developers' financing. He said rapid price growth in some cities was mainly because of a shortage of supply as well as "unreasonable demand.""If not curbed, the excessive gains in prices could spread to more regions, affecting people's living standards and threatening financial safety and even social stability," he added. He said the government would increase crackdowns on illegal practices by property developers, including hoarding of land and delaying sales to exaggerate profits. The government would also strengthen checks on developers' land purchases and fund-raising, he said.He said that the government would seek to increase supply of low-income housing and that a plan regarding construction of such housing for the period to 2012 would be unveiled before the end of July this year, he said.
