As many people started decorating early, it's likely 2020 is a "boom" year for Christmas tree sales. Some even bought a "real" tree for the first time.In July, Bob Schaefer had a feeling it was going to be a big year for Christmas tree sales. The general manager of Oregon-based Noble Mountain Tree Farm says his company looks at the big holidays leading up to the Christmas season to get an idea of what the market will be like.“The next thing we watch is pumpkins - again, off the charts, early,” Schaefer said.Noble Mountain is a large tree producer, and it has been in the Christmas business since 1969. It now sells about half a million trees a year. Schaefer says it developed helicopter harvesting and can have your tree cut and shipped in 24 hours.“This year, we shipped to Dubai, Hong Kong, Canada, Mexico and of course the US,” Schaefer said.Christmas trees are a 10-year crop and once a farm has harvested those trees that are mature and ready, that's it for the tree.“Our sales were off the charts and we did sell out,” Schaefer said. “We’re wholesalers, we don’t sell to individual customers, but our wholesale sales were done by the first of October. Our trees were committed for sale."Schaefer said people started decorating the weekend after Halloween, leading to thriving initial sales.“If it turns out that COVID has people staying home and they have in their hearts the need for a lot of Christmas cheer, then we can provide that with a real tree,” Doug Hundley, spokesman for the National Christmas Tree Association, said.He said if you don't have your tree yet, don't worry. They won't sell out."We’ve never had a shortage. What we have now is a nice balanced, tight market between supply and demand,” Hundley said. It's no easy feat to predict the market, in fact, it's next to impossible, he said.“When we have a boom year like we may be having right now, we kind of suspected it, but we didn’t anticipate it and we can’t produce a real tree overnight,” Hundley said. “So, we have to provide what we have and hope it’ll work out.”He said if lots are empty, it's because the major tree weekends have passed.Ninety percent of people have already gotten their tree this year. Hundley says what's left will suffice for those who still need one. He hopes they all sell. If they don't, they're rendered useless.“The beauty of real trees over fake is we have a highly biodegradable product, it’s grown naturally, part of nature, benefits the environment supports the American economy and when we’re done, we can grind them so easily and chip them into mulch,” Hundley said. “They literally become soil in a couple of years, put back in the ground.”If you are purchasing a natural Christmas tree, experts recommend not adding additives. All your tree needs is plain water at any temperature. 2813

At a small store off a two-lane road in rural South Carolina, "lightning struck," the excited mayor of Simpsonville said Wednesday.Mayor Janice Curtis said she found out from a reporter that the winning ticket in the .537 billion Mega Millions drawing had been sold in her town.According to the mayor, the journalist asked, "How do you feel about this happening in little ol' Simpsonville?' And I about fell out. I had no idea. Can you believe it? One ticket! Here!"Simpsonville is the kind of town where farm fields are giving way to housing developers. The city grew from 18,000 to 22,000 people as the Greenville suburbs encroached over the past seven years. 671

ATLANTA — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is suing Atlanta to block the city from enforcing its mandate to wear a mask in public and other rules related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Kemp and Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, in a state court suit filed late Thursday, argued that Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has overstepped her authority and must obey Kemp’s executive orders under state law. The suit comes a day after Kemp clarified his executive orders to expressly block Atlanta and at least 14 other local governments from requiring people to wear face coverings. Kemp’s order was met with defiance Thursday by Bottoms and other mayors, who said they would continue enforcing their mandates and were prepared to go to court.Kemp has maintained a policy of voluntary use of masks throughout the state. Georgia has seen a significant increase in COVID-19 cases in the past week. In recent days, the state is averaging about 3,000 new cases a day — by far the highest totals since the pandemic began. The CDC recommends that everyone wear a mask in public, particularly during situations where social distancing is difficult. 1133

As start dates for school inch closer, educators and health officials are unveiling plans to go back to school safely. One focus: face masks.“It’s important for people to understand germs,” Laura-Anne Cleveland, an associate nursing officer at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, said. Cleveland says everything starts with education. “Trying to get them to understand that air and breath from us can have germs in it," she said.Cleveland said the best way to do that with younger kids is through a little science experiment.“Putting a container of water, putting pepper in it and putting soap on their finger and putting your finger in. The pepper disperses, and so showing that the pepper is the germs and soap and things like that are really good to be able to use,” she explained. As schools finalize plans for reopening--whether that be online, in person, or a combination of the two--masks have become one of the biggest talking points.“I have never dealt with anything like this,” Marty Gutierrez, an 8th-grade math teacher, said. Gutierrez has been teaching for 26 years.“So much is up in the air and we start back to school in three weeks,” he explained. “And we don’t have guidelines or they are changing every day or even two, three times a day.”One of those guidelines is whether masks will be recommended or required.“Like anything recommended or required with middle school kids, it’s that year where you push boundaries,” Gutierrez said. “I get parents and their ideals and values and what they want their freedoms to be. Just getting kids to wear masks is going to be difficult enough, and we know we’re going to have some kids that ‘You know what? My parents don’t want me wearing a mask.'”If schools recommend masks instead of requiring them, there are fears this could open up doors for bullying.“I’m sure that there will be some kids that are harassing kids for not wearing a mask, or kids that have a different mask,” he said.Or conversations about fairness.“If you have a sibling that has to wear a mask but you don't have to, it’s going to not feel fair,” Cleveland said.Masks have become controversial, but to Gutierrez, it’s just an extra layer of safety for everyone in the building, including those who may be at high-risk for getting COVID-19.“People are scared. I have friends that have children that are recovering from cancer, or I have friends that take care of elderly parents that are immunocompromised,” he said.Cleveland and Gutierrez, both parents, themselves, want to keep kids in school and make sure kids remember the why.“Why are we wearing masks? Why are we wearing face shields? Things like that, and getting the children to understand that,” Cleveland explained.“This is the best we can do right now, and if we don't follow these guidelines, you're not going to be seeing these friends again, we’re going to go back to that situation where you’re only going to see them online. So, I think it’s expressing that trade-off,” Gutierrez said. 2991
