Juan Rodriguez's 1-year-old twins died after being left in a hot car for eight hours. INDIANAPOLIS — More than 300 air traffic controllers work in Indianapolis and they are beginning to feel the pain of the partial government shutdown. The jets continue to fly and the controllers continue to make sure that there is no chaos in the skies — but there is a price. Air traffic controllers are trying to keep your flight safe, even as they do it without pay because of the government shutdown."We are working 6 days a week. Some are working 10 hours a day, that's across the country," said Marc Schneider, National Air Traffic Controllers Association president. "We are at a 30 year low in staffing for air traffic controllers nationwide. The school in Oklahoma City is shut down."According to Schneider, controllers were recently trained on new technology that allows them to text message pilots in the cockpit. This was supposed to roll out Friday and now isn't happening because of the shutdown.If it is not implemented by January 15, all the controllers will have to be retrained — at a high cost. "It's a stressful job to begin with. These are people's lives we are dealing with," Schneider said. "Everyone just got done paying for Christmas and now there is no money coming in. Those are things we have to worry about."Also at the airport, folks who work for the Transportation Security Administration are on the job, and not getting paid. They are represented by the American Federation of Government Employees, who handle 30,000 workers in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. That body is filing a lawsuit against the federal government."We're saying it's against the law to work employees without paying them. These are not slaves. It's against the law," said Arnold Scott of the American Federation of Government Employees. "The fair labor standards require federal employees be paid for the work that they perform."The hope is that the lawsuit will never get a hearing because the government will reopen. 1934

  

Jeff Marquise is taking small steps in distance, but he's making huge strides for science.Eight years ago, Marquise was paralyzed from a mountain biking accident.“It was a gap jump and I sort of just rolled over it and went over the handlebars on the other side of the jump and came down right on my head,” he recalls. “I sustained a C5 and C6 burst fracture.” Those injuries left Marquise unable to walk. Now, with the help of new technology and old-school physical training, he is leaving his wheelchair and walking again. “No one thought I could stand up on my own or step on my own,” he says. “So, being able to do it with the implant has brought some hope back to the equation.” The implant is an epidural stimulator that’s embedded near the spinal cord. Electricity then triggers the nervous system which can help restore brain-to-spine connectivity. Researchers at the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center at the University of Louisville are calling this a scientific breakthrough.“It gives us hope that we know now that the spinal cord has this capability,” says Claudia Angeli, Ph.D., of the University of Louisville. “So, it’s a matter of being able to tap into that.”While Angeli is not calling this a quick fix for paralysis, she is finding excellent results.“You can actually see that activation of the muscles,” she says. “It’s the spinal cord responding to information. So, the more activity the more responsive or the more excitable the spinal cord is.”That excitement can be felt across the country.A recent study by the Christopher and Dana Reeve foundation discovered that there are nearly 1 in 50 people living with paralysis in the United States.That breaks down to about 5.4 million people, or the combined populations of Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington, DC.“It is life changing,” Marquise says. “But I’m always careful not to oversell it. It’s not walking around the house doing chores.”While being brutally honest, Marquise says he’s also very happy to get back on his feet again. “When you first get hurt, a lot of people are told that they are not going to be able to walk again,” he says. “So, being able to do it in this setting has brought a ray a hope for me and other people.” 2235

  

John Sherer is the organist and director of music at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, Illinois. “Being a musician is a true calling, because through music you can touch people, you can heal people, you can connect to people in a much, much deeper way, than just through words,” he says. Sherer believes music has a way of binding people together. “Hearing a pipe organ connects you to the universe in a primal way, in a very profound way,” he says.People who walk into the church as he’s playing, say the impact is immediate.“I feel like it’s amazing and magnificent," says a child walking into the church. "I feel like God is right here and is right next to me."Sherer discovered his calling to be a musician early in life, and he’s a big reason why a very special organ in Chicago exists today.“This is the largest pipe organ in Chicago, with well over 8,000 pipes,” Sherer explains. “You’ve heard the phrase ‘pulling out all the stops’, well this is where it really comes from. You pull out all the stops, you’re going all the way, you’re going to get a big, big sound.” The creation of pipe organ took 10 years. Designed by John Michael Quimby, a consultant from New York, the instrument was completed in 2016.“It’s really like having a whole orchestra right under your fingertips," he says. "You’ve got English horn and French horn and flutes and strings and trumpets and trombones, and no two organs are alike.”It takes your entire body to play the instrument, and the intricate details are what make each organ one-of-a-kind. It also provides a full spectrum of sound. “Mozart himself said it was the king of instruments.”The organ is capable of the lowest frequencies any instrument can make, and the highest frequencies any human ear can hear.“The smaller the pipe, the higher the sound. That is the highest note in the organ, so that pipe’s about the sound of my little finger,” he says.To appreciate the instrumental wonder, you have to go inside.“The organ starts in the basement where the blower is located," Sherer says. "The air from the blower goes through massive tubes up to the pipes, and the pipes go all the way up to the ceiling. It’s like being in a tree house at this point, because you’re surrounded by so many different sections of the organ.”Sherer says the pipes are located in the front of the church, in the back of the church and on the sides of the church. The whole building becomes part of the instrument from basement to ceiling, front to back and side to side.The pipes in the back help create a surround sound so everyone can feel connected to the music. The finished product is a beautiful amalgamation of sight and sound.“When people walk into Fourth Presbyterian Church, their eyes make them go ‘ahhhh’ and when they hear the organ, their ears make them go ‘ooooh.’”Sherer explains it as an out-of-body experience as you’re aware of the whole space around you. “I hope that when people hear this organ, they feel comfort and healing, and that they are inspired and lifted up," he says. "And I hope that when they experience the sound of this organ, they realize that there’s something in the universe that’s larger than them.” 3184
