ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 17-year-old was killed early Saturday morning following a hit-and-run in unincorporated Escondido. According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened on Mesa Rock Road near Mesa Ranch Drive around 12:30 a.m. CHP says the 17-year-old female was standing outside a vehicle parked on the right shoulder having a conversation with four friends. Three of the individuals, including the teen, crossed the road from east to west. As they crossed, CHP says either a white Toyota SUV or a pickup truck speeding northbound struck the teen."The California Highway Patrol Oceanside Area is asking the public for assistance in locating a 2008 to 2012 model year range second generation, Toyota Highlander, pearl white in color. The vehicle will have damage to the right front headlight area and right-side mirror," said CHP Ofc. Mark Latulippe. 877

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - A brush fire broke out in Escondido’s Kit Carson Park Friday, sending a plume of smoke above the area. The flames started just before noon in a riverbed of the park at 3333 Bear Valley Parkway near Westfield North County mall, Escondido Fire reported. At least 10 engines and a firefighting helicopter responded to the scene to put out the fire in brush and trees. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - An embattled property in Escondido is entering a new chapter. Demolition of the Escondido Country Clubhouse began Thursday. It’s expected to take several days to clear the structure that caught fire last year that was site for criminal activity according to those who live near it.“I’m very excited it’s coming down,” said Kelly Richardson, who lives nearby. New Urban West plans on building 380 homes on the 109-acre property.“I feel like property values will go back up to where they were,” added Richardson, “I just like the idea of something here that's going to bring something together instead of separate them which is what I feel like has been happening for the last five years.”RELATED COVERAGE: 743

European scientists say they have caught a rare fish they describe as a "living fossil."According to the BBC, scientists for the European Union's Institute for Sea and Atmosphere captured a 5-foot long frilled shark in the waters off the coast of southern Portugal.Frilled sharks are rarely seen by humans, and typically live thousands of feet below the ocean's surface. This particular shark was caught at a depth of 2,300 feet.According to Fox News, there have only been three recorded sightings of frilled sharks in the past 10 years. The fish was spotted twice near the coast of Japan in 2007 and 2017, and in Australia in 2014.  671

Facebook said Thursday that it would add a new feature in order to give new context around news stories.According to a press release, Facebook will push a notification when a user attempts to share a news article that is more than 90 days old.According to the press release, Facebook conducted research that indicated news organizations "expressed concerns about older stories being shared on social media as current news.""To ensure people have the context they need to make informed decisions about what to share on Facebook, the notification screen will appear when people click the share button on articles older than 90 days, but will allow people to continue sharing if they decide an article is still relevant," Facebook said in a statement.Facbeook's announcement came the day before a 2016 article by Scripps station WTVF in Nashville about the removal of a Billy Graham statue went viral on the platform, nearly four years after its publish date. Users have likely continued to share the 2016 story by conflating it with the removal of monuments dedicated to Confederate generals and slave owners in the wake of weekslong protests against systemic racism that began following the death of George Floyd in May.Facebook says it began rolling out the feature to some users on Tuesday.Facebook added that it's considering adding a similar notification screen to posts regarding COVID-19 that would link users to the site's COVID-19 Information Center for more information 1485
