SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University’s oldest known alumnus passed away just 17 days after celebrating his 107th birthday, the campus reported.According to school officials, William “Bill” Vogt is among the first students to set foot on the campus at Campanile Drive in 1931."It was during the Great Depression at a time when Edward L. Hardy, whom Vogt once recalled as “very low key,” was the school’s second president," the school said.SDSU said Vogt completed his "business degree course work in late 1934 when San Diego State had no official commencement ceremony for mid-year degree completion. Although he said he requested a diploma, he could not recall having ever received one."In 2018, SDSU President Adela de la Torre honored his request and presented Vogt with a diploma 83 years later during a ceremony.The school said that Vogt was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War and retired in 1970 with the rank of commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve."A notice of his death issued by the Navy said he enlisted in the Reserve with a rank of Yeoman First Class in 1940 and was called up Dec. 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He served as an intelligence officer at several locations, including California and Washington, D.C. While living in Seattle, he was called back to active duty upon the outbreak of the Korean War," the school said.Vogt's son described his father as a role model, best friend, and hero, but also as a loyal Aztecs basketball fan.“He saw 90 years of SDSU basketball and this was the best team in 90 years,” Bob Vogt said. “The team meant a lot to him." 1641

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several major streets around San Diego are closed to cars to make way for more bicycles Sunday. The San Diego Bike Coalition hopes the event, called CicloSDias, will encourage people to ride their bikes instead of using their vehicles. Streets like Adams Avenue in Normal Heights and El Cajon Boulevard in City Heights will be closed. The event starts at 10 a.m. and lasts until 5 p.m. The event will also host a free concert with food and activities on El Cajon Boulevard between Fairmont and 44th Street. Amid the rollout of coronavirus shots, their focus is now to prevent people from buying vaccines advertised as the real thing.Dr. Timothy Mackey, an associate professor of Anesthesiology and Global Public Health at UC San Diego, said scammers are taking advantage of consumers seeking COVID-19 vaccines because there's a need, but not enough supply."We first saw herbal and nutritional supplements because people were trying to avoid the disease, then a bunch of testing kits we saw when people didn't have access to testing kits,” said Mackey.And now, he said people browsing the web will see advertisements promoting fake COVID-19 vaccines."You cannot get any vaccine on the internet. If you're seeing a post that says you can buy it right away, it's not the real vaccine,” said Mackey.He said falling into a trap could cause serious harm to yourself and others."Middle ground you get sterilized water, and it doesn't work. Then, you go out and risk transmission to others,” Mackey said.Secondly, he said you'd get ripped off and risk having your credit card information and identity stolen. And third, "You get a product that's spoiled or a needle not sterile, and you get another disease or something that's toxic for your body."Mackey said the bottom line is the vaccine will not be available online anytime soon."The vaccine will only be available in registered healthcare facilities and only a few that are specifically validated to distribute the vaccine. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University students were outraged with the football home opener tailgate at SDCCU Stadium Saturday.This comes after an email was sent last October by the university declaring new rules for tailgates. It reads "students and recognized student organizations with more than 25 people in attendance are required to register for tailgating.""People are bummed but I haven’t heard that many people upset about it," SDSU Freshman Caitlin said.The new form requires organizations to acknowledge kegs, glassware, and underage drinking is prohibited.
