BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- In response to the government's call to build a greener economy, China's transport authorities have taken a slew of measures to promote energy saving and emission reductions in the sector.Under the sector's funding policy unveiled earlier this year, 122 emission-cutting projects in the industry have received financial support totalling 250 million yuan (39.3 million U.S. dollars). Encouraged by the special funds, another 8.06 billion yuan in investment went to the projects, according to He Jianzhong, spokesman for the Ministry of Transport (MOT).The projects were estimated to be able to save 315,000 metric tons of coal equivalent, replace 224,000 metric tons of fuel oil and reduce carbon dioxide emission by 1.14 million metric tons, He said.Meanwhile, the MOT has launched nationwide programs to promote low-carbon traffic. It has carried out 80 pilot projects on emission control and designated 10 cities as pilot areas to study and promote green transport system, including Tianjin, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Guiyang, Baoding and Wuhan.He said the ministry will continue to intensify efforts to regulate emissions in the sector to meet the industry's control target during the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015).In efforts to build a more environmental-friendly society, the government pledged that it will reduce the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of economic output in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent compared with the level of 2005.

BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- The United States Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will discuss economic ties and exchange views with Chinese officials on the global economic situation during his trip to China, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said on Monday.Liu said at a regular press briefing that Geithner will visit China from Jan. 10 to 11 as the U.S. President's special representative. Premier Wen Jiabao, Vice President Xi Jinping, Vice Premier Li Keqiang and Vice Premier Wang Qishan will meet with him during the visit.Liu said China and the U.S. have agreed to build a partnership of cooperation based on mutual respect and mutual benefit."The global economic and financial situation is facing severe challenges. BANGKOK, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of Bangkok residents gathered in the city centre on Thursday, making ten thousand micro-organism balls to help clean the polluted water in flooded areas.Organized by local volunteer groups, the activity aimed to make 10,000 Effective Micro-organism balls (EM Ball), which are proven to be efficient in cleaning contaminated floodwater.According to Danal Chanchaochai, the organizer of the event, people in flooded areas were facing critical conditions as germs may spread in polluted water and threat their health. Mainly consist of soil, rice bran and micro-organisms, a tennis-sized EM Ball is capable to clean up 10 liter of water and can last for as long as one month, which making it a perfect water sanitizer.Another main objective of the event was to educate citizens on the simple steps of making EM Balls, in case of more flood in the city, he said.The organization had generated buzz on social media sites like facebook and twitter, calling everyone to help.Held at Amarin Plaza, one shopping mall at city centre, the activity attracted groups of volunteers, including office workers, local students and even foreign visitors.Volunteers were lining up to get the raw materials from the collection point and gave back completed EM Balls to the distribution centre in boxes. Residents needed to present their identity cards in order to retrieve the donated water cleaners.Volunteer Kulawan Ayura Chai said that, although her house hadn' t been affected by water yet, she understood the difficult situation faced by the victims and felt responsible to help.Lasted for three days from Thursday to Saturday, the activity aimed to make 100,000 EM Balls, adding to the 30,000 balls made earlier, to distribute to the flood victims in Bangkok and other regions in Thailand.

SEOUL, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- LG Electronics, the world's No.2 TV maker, said Friday that it will showcase a smart TV that runs Google TV during next week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.The LG-made Google TV powered by Google's Android operating system (OS) will be unveiled next Monday at the U.S. consumer electronics fair in Las Vegas, according to an e-mailed statement by LG.The Internet TV will offer its Android-based user interface, enabling consumers to enjoy web browsing and social networking, LG said.
