Health officials nationwide – and in the Kansas City metro – are warning about heart condition in recovering COVID-19 patients that could have more of an effect on athletes.Myocarditis, which inflames the heart muscle, is being called the "breaking news" of coronavirus."[Myocarditis] can lead to a thinning and distension of the heart and a lack of function in the heart," said Dr. Steve Stites, chief medical officer at the University of Kansas Health System, "And even to heart failure and the need for a heart transplant and bad heart rhythms that can lead to death."The condition could be exacerbated by the type of exercise athletes are used to."In college athletics, we don't know the outcome of myocarditis," Stites said. "We don't know that a high impact sport could worsen the damage to the heart. We don't know what high-intensity exercise might be doing to a heart that's already slightly inflamed. All of those are leading to questions about the safety of returning to high-performance sports."The hospital and health professionals around the U.S. are screening athletes to better understand how myocarditis affects the organs."Our fear is that we could be missing a lot of diseases that we can't see and we can't test for," Stites said, "and that can include very small blood vessel clots inside the heart that lead to more heart damage."Doctors at KU plan to make an assessment of how this will affect college and high school sports in the coming weeks.A study in Germany that looked at 100 patients recovering from COVID-19 found that 60% of them had myocarditis independent of preexisting conditions.Doctors at KU said the condition hasn't been studied as much in the U.SThis story was originally reported by Sarah Plake at KSHB. 1754
Here's what's making headlines in the political world on Saturday, November 24 2018:Trump administration asks SCOTUS to hear transgender ban- In yet another aggressive attempt to bypass federal appeals courts, the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Friday to hear a challenge to President Donald Trump's policy that bars most transgender individuals from military service.The policy, first announced by the President in July 2017 via Twitter and later officially released by Secretary of Defense James Mattis, blocks individuals who suffer from a condition known as gender dysphoria from serving with limited exceptions. It also specifies that individuals without the condition can serve but only if they do so according to the sex they were assigned at birth.District courts across the country have so far blocked the policy from going into effect. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in one challenge earlier this fall and the DC Circuit will hear arguments in early December. Read more 1022

Home listings in more cities will no longer use the word "master" to describe large bedrooms and bathrooms.In June, the Houston Association of Realtors decided to instead use the word “primary” to describe the largest bedroom or bathroom in a home listing.The association, HAR for short, updated listings on the website through mid-June. In a statement, the organization said the change has been “raised and considered for many years” and was one of nine requests submitted from HAR members for discussion at recent meetings about updating MLS listings. Other requests included things like electric vehicle charging stations and balcony details.“The overarching message was that some members were concerned about how the terms might be perceived by some other agents and consumers. Based on the discussion that took place, more members viewed the terms as sexist than racist, although some did view them as racist,” the statement said. “The origin of the terms is debated, and we are not saying they are rooted in slavery.”The word “master” is not banned within the organization and members, only in their online listings. Realtors may choose to use “master” on their own materials selling a home.HAR told members the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development has already advised that use of the term “master bedroom” or “master bathroom” is not discriminatory and does not violate Fair Housing laws.Some builders have already dropped the term years ago, HAR said. According to the Houston Chronicle, at least one builder in Texas now calls a home's primary bedroom an "owner's retreat." High school seniors who plan on taking a gap year this fall to wait out the pandemic could be paying for it for the rest of their lives.While a one-year wait might seem like the right decision for students who don’t want to study online or risk COVID-19 exposure, graduating a year later could cost ,000 in lifetime earnings. A new study from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York details how taking a gap year could put students behind their peers financially and create an insurmountable earnings gap.According to the study, a 22-year-old college graduate earns ,000 on average the first year out of college, and can expect to make ,000 the year they turn 25. By contrast, if a student takes a gap year and delays graduation, they can expect to earn ,000 by age 25 — ,000 less. That gap will perpetuate and compound for late graduates throughout their careers.“Being a year behind, these differences add up each and every year, so that those graduating later never catch up to those who graduated earlier,” researchers Jaison Abel and Richard Deitz write in the report. “Together, these costs add up to more than ,000 over one’s working life, which erodes the value of a college degree.”College might cost even moreCollege typically gets more expensive every year, but this year might be an exception. A few colleges are freezing tuition or offering discounts, and students might see their living expenses decrease. Federal student loan interest rates are at historic lows as well.But experts don’t expect those trends to continue past the health crisis. And missing school this fall means you don’t get to take advantage of lower college expenses.Irma Becerra, president of Marymount University in Virginia, says colleges have had to make major investments to prepare for instruction this fall. Her school plans a hybrid-flex model that will allow students to blend in-person and remote learning based on their needs and comfort level.“Every university that I know has had to incur significant expense to deal with safely reopening or keeping staff and faculty on payroll,” Becerra says.She adds that while colleges are sensitive to the ripple effects of the economic downturn, she expects them to raise tuition in the future unless the government increases investments in higher education. “I can only imagine that [colleges] will have to raise tuition because we’ve all had significant expenses.”Students who opt for a gap year may also have to face higher tuition with less aid. He says that students who are experiencing anxiety about the fall may be best served by taking off a semester or two — despite potential wage loss.“The worst thing that could happen is you start college, you don’t finish and you have all this debt,” Van Der Werf says when talking about the potential for some students to be unsuccessful with remote learning. “Then you don’t have a degree to pay off that debt.”He advises students to keep their options open and pay attention to their school’s reopening plans. “There are colleges who announced that they were coming back but are going online.
