SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local company is combining old and new technology to try and help the military cope with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is a disorder that some develop after experiencing a shocking or dangerous event, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. San Diego-based Baslyne partnered with medical technology company WAVi to measure the strength and quickness of the brain’s response in members of the military. Together, the companies are using an electroencephalogram (EEG) to measure brain activity, combined with a specialized test to measure response to various tones.While this technology has been used to understand concussions in young athletes, Baslyne's CEO Tom Kinder said they are now using it to understand PTSD in our military.“It’s probably the most important thing we’re doing,” said Kinder. “We’re looking at brain wave indicators that are showing [or] have symptoms of certain aspects of PTSD.”The test can be as quick as four minutes. It gathers real-time information about your brain performance.“We collect brain voltage information [and] evoke potentials where we give the brain a signal and see how quick it responds,” said WAVi CEO Dr. David Oakley. Oakley said the goal is to do the test on members of the military pre-deployment and track them through their life to find indicators of PTSD.“[It’s] a game changer. If we have enough data, we’d be able to tell if they’re the same as when they were when they deployed,” Oakley said.Kinder said they have worked with a couple hundred veterans so far, mostly with private doctors.Army veteran Steven Padilla served in Iraq. In 2009, he was tasked with looking for roadside bombs. During one mission, he saw a friend get blown up by an IED.“I was supposed to be in the truck,” he said. Padilla said he got switched to a different one 15 minutes prior to the blast. “With my therapist, we found that was kind of my triggering point for PTSD,” Padilla said.According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, up to 20 percent of those who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have PTSD in a given year. He went through the WAVi test using the EEG during a demonstration at Cal State San Marcos. “His brain voltage was a little on the low side,” Oakley said after the test. “His brain speed was a little on the slow side.” Neither of those things surprised Padilla because of his past experiences. He sees a benefit to using the technology on members of the military.“I also think it would [have been] beneficial for my PAs and the doctors that were seeing me to possibly help me before I hit that wall,” Padilla said. He believes the test would also help in the long run with treatments and filing disabilities.The FDA has cleared the technology. The cost of the test can range between to 0, depending if you’re an individual or in a group. It is not always covered by insurance.“If we can track 500 people over three to four years of deployment, then that’s the data set we’re looking for,” Oakley said. “I really think it’s important for you to have a stable and successful career, you need to be at your best. If this is one way to do that, I think it’s a good decision,” Padilla said. 3263

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Carlos family is hoping surveillance video will help track down the man recorded making himself comfortable in their home.Along Wallsey Drive, the Meduna family got a heart-sinking scare the day before Halloween.Around 8:30 a.m, Megan Meduna and her husband both got a notification that their garage door was open.  Inside the home, a camera was recording an intruder. Meduna says the man had pried open a window screen in the front and forced open a window.  A sound heard in the video is the burglar opening the door to the garage, before he's seen shutting the window he just climbed through. As he puts on his gloves, he walks up to the camera and flips it over."It's just creepy, creepy to see someone in my house sneaking around," said Meduna.By the time police arrived, the man was gone. He got away with only a little bit of cash, but the impact was felt across a neighborhood.  Surveillance video showed him casing the area.  Minutes before the break-in, a neighbor reported seeing the man knocking at her door, then pretending to need directions when she answered the door.  At another home, a ripped screen was found near a side window and an out-of-place brick was discovered outside another window.Neighbors are now wondering if the same man could be linked to other burglaries. A few weeks ago and blocks away, 10News reported on a break-in with a similar MO that left a newlywed couple missing wedding gifts and family heirlooms.  A month ago, there was a another burglary at Meduna's home, in which electronics and jewelry were taken."Feel violated and angry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man united families across the United States after digging into a military training crash that happened 50 years ago at MCAS El Toro.Johnathan Keene often visited his cousin's grave at Arlington National Cemetery, "I go up to visit him twice a year, typically Memorial Day and Veteran's Day." On January 15, 2019, he was in the neighborhood, stopped by and it was that day that he noticed Maj. Walter Zytkewicz grave next to his cousin's grave.Maj. Zytkewicz was in the Marines, like his cousin, and died the day before his cousin. He said that 'grabbed' him.Up until that day he knew his cousin, Capt. Robert Walls, died in a military crash, but it wasn't spoken of at the dinner table.He knew there must be a connection to the two men, so he started digging. He found four other Marines were on the same training flight July 30th, 1970. "Major Zytkewicz was 2 months away from retiring," Keene said he was studying to become a realtor.Staff Sergeant Kenneth Davis, 1st Lieutenant Mullins and Corporal Kenneth Metzdorf. Keene said Metzdorf wasn't supporsed to be on the flight, "called his best friend and said hey could you go on this flight for me today? So they switched and that cost him [his life]."Keene tracked down the redacted incident report and filled in the gaps with interviews from witnesses and Marines who knew the men on board."Witnesses say they waited too late to pull the plane out of the angle of attack and the plane hit, bounced, flipped upside down, hit again, bounced in the air, the left wing fell off, all four props fell off. The plane landed right in the middle of the air field. Flames and fuel streamed down the runway, they said it was basically a long stream of fuel and fire," he said.Flames Keene was amazed to learn his cousin and Metzdorf walked through, "the report listed 80%-90% coverage of third degree burns. I can't even imagine how he walked out," he said shocked.Mullins was killed on impact, found 50 yards from the plane with a broken leg. Walls, Zytkewicz and Metzdorf died days later from their injuries.Keene said Walls died from burns in his lungs.SSgt. Davis passed in 2013.The exact cause was redacted in the report. Keene believes the Marine Corps wants to preserve the honor of the pilot and protect his family."After the crash, the material that made up Marine Corps and Navy flight suits was changed. They thought it was a flame retardant material, unfortunately it burned and melted to their skin," he said.Keene hopes these difficult discoveries will fuel Marines' admiration. To keep their memories alive, Keene created a plaque with the team's names that will be presented at MCAS Miramar, where the squadron now resides."Every other Marine that goes through that squadron will see that plaque and realize there's five men that in some way or another touched their lives from either a safety stand-point or history and lineology of VMGR-352," Keene said. 2946

According to WalletHub, San Diego takes the 47th spot on the list among 257 other cities throughout California. America’s Finest City ranked 51st for quality of life, 139th for health care and 4th in the activities ranking. San Diego did take the top spot in California in several categories. According to WalletHub, San Diego has the most museums and fishing facilities per capita when compared with other California cities. San Diego did, however, rank quite a bit lower when it comes to adjusted cost of living and percentage of population aged 65 and older, placing 149th and 145th respectively. According to the WalletHub ranking, the best cities in California for retirement are Los Gatos, Los Altos and Walnut Creek. The lowest-ranking cities are Modesto, San Bernardino and Stockton. To compile the list WalletHub compared more than 250 cities across 28 key metrics. 997

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new monolith was supposed to be unveiled at a Scripps Ranch shopping center on Wednesday, but it was found destroyed hours before the introduction ceremony.Several weeks ago, a mysterious monolith appeared at the Scripps Ranch Marketplace, attracting crowds and raising questions like where it came from and who put it there.However, several days later, the monolith was removed by a group of teenagers.The theft of the monolith was disappointing for many, including Nutmeg Bakery & Café co-owner Drew Hoffus. He told ABC 10News that his business not only had a first-class view of the monolith, but it helped bring in customers.“This year has been a challenge for everyone … The landmarks helped us out a lot.
