(KGTV) - Border officials highlighted their accomplishments Friday, saying the past year has hit some benchmarks."The past year has taken a tremendous toll on our agency, our agents and their families," Kathleen Scudder, Acting Chief Patrol Agent for the San Diego Sector said, referring to the thousands of migrants who traveled to the U.S.-Mexico Border in San Diego County.While a nearly 14-mile stretch of new bollard fencing was completed in August, from the beach to Otay Mountain, officials said their agents faced more attacks compared to the previous fiscal year."There were a total of 156 assaults on agents while performing their duties, agents endured 72 assaults the prior fiscal year," Scudder said.While arrests at the border have been down the last six months, drug smuggling has shifted to the water, Scudder said. Agents seized 3,273 pounds of marijuana, 1,284 pounds of cocaine, 3,918 pounds of methamphetamine, 288 pounds of heroin and 108 pounds of fentanyl "that could provide a fatal dose to 24 million people."Customs and Border Protection Agents shifted their role over the past year, providing much needed humanitarian aid for migrants from caravans. While agents faced national scrutiny for their treatment of migrants, Scudder described a show of kindness."Our agents persevered, often bringing items from their homes to care for small children and babies in their custody," she said.She described an act of heroism where an agent found two boys who were lost near Chula Vista. He found one of the boys unconscious, suffering from hypothermia. He wrapped the boy in his coat and hugged him, to provide body warmth until help arrived. The boy recovered and went home six weeks later.Scudder said she expects the downward trend in illegal border crossings to continue, thanks to the wall, agreements with agencies and Mexico, and Migrant Protection Protocol in place. (KGTV) - A SWAT team was called to a San Marcos apartment complex Tuesday morning after a man suspected in a stabbing incident barricaded himself in an apartment unit.San Diego County Sheriff’s Department officials said deputies were called to an apartment complex in the 200 block of Knoll Road shortly before 2:30 a.m. in response to an argument that escalated into a stabbing.According to sheriff’s officials, deputies arrived to find a 49-year-old man with multiple stab wounds. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.Officials did not immediately release additional details on the altercation.Responding deputies spotted a man believed to have been involved in the stabbing and attempted to make contact with him, but he ran into an apartment unit and barricaded himself.A SWAT unit surrounded the complex after the man refused to come out.At around 8:30 a.m., sheriff's officials said the man surrendered without incident and was taken into custody. Scratch and sniff stickers have gone high tech, becoming another way to test for coronavirus.Researchers at the University of Colorado and Yale University have developed a “u-Smell-it” test that works with an app.Essentially, users will use a high-tech scratch and sniff to detect whether they've lost their sense of smell.“There's five windows and they have different odors on each of them. Basically, all you have to do is take an app on your phone, and you basically scan the card. It has a QR code, and it recognizes the unique combination of odors. This is really important because you want the test to be different every time,” said Derek Toomre, professor at the Yale University School of Medicine.The user will choose the corresponding odors. And after, they're done. The app will give them a score on how well they did or didn't do.This test isn't meant to replace the PCR test or antibody tests that are approved by the FDA.“This would be a supplement. This would not be to replace. This would be a supplement so that, if you failed to smell, then you would know to go in for an antigen or PCR test, but you're more likely to be positive on those tests, so it would actually be really, really helpful. (KGTV) — Cameras caught a thief wreaking havoc at an East County business park, culminating in several destructive acts after he realized he was locked in.Scott Trafton has seen the video countless times, but his emotions have yet to lessen."Aggravating and makes me angry," said Trafton, who owns XP Builders.Just before midnight last Thursday night, a truck is seen driving into a business park on Wheatlands Court. The truck, believed to be a Chevy Silverado, is parked in the dark for more than four hours, before a man emerges and heads toward Trafton's general contractor business. In the video, the man grabs items from the truck bed, before prying open a toolbox in the back. A knife at this side, the man would get away with more than a thousand dollars with of Trafton's tools. "It hurts being a small business. Every penny counts," said Trafton.Trafton is not the only victim. The thief left behind a trail of shattered truck windows and missing items."Basically took whatever wasn't bolted down," said Trafton.When the man went to leave, he was met by a gate, locked by someone who had left earlier.
