Thousands of Americans descended upon Washington D.C. Friday for a "March on Washington." The event was organized following the death of George Floyd earlier this year. "It's just too much injustice," Beth Wagner, who traveled from New Jersey to participate in the march, said. Wagner has two black sons. "I am always in fear they could be at the wrong place at the wrong time," Wagner added. Andre Miller traveled from Portland, Oregon, with his 14-year-old son. Miller showed the scars he received after being recently shot by police with a tear gas canister. Miller came to D.C. for his son, who has been called the N-Word in school. "If my kids get called the N-word, we want a suspension or something," Miller said. Andre Junior says the speakers serve as motivation. Top USA Swimming officials are under fire for what critics say was a culture of sexual abuse that was allowed to persist for decades unchecked.A stunning new investigative report first published in the Orange County Register found that since 1997, more than 250 coaches and officials were either arrested, charged or disciplined by USA Swimming for sexual abuse or misconduct.The paper -- citing, documents, interviews with abuse survivors, former Olympians, USA Swimming officials and others -- claims that there are at least 590 victims. According to the report, the organization's top brass was aware of the problem, but did little, if anything, to stop it.  674

But a recent report made by the Consumer Federation of America says that scary sales tactics and false claims are allowing companies to take your money right from in front of you, and the problem is growing across the country.While burglaries in the country are down by nearly 5 percent, the amount of alarm systems is expected to be up 30 percent by 2020."They're starting to see these alarming practices of companies using scare tactics, other kinds of misrepresentations and also failing to really make clear to consumers how much their services are going to cost," says Susan Grant, director of consumer protection and privacy at Consumer Federation of America.The report found companies tried instilling fear in people in order to get them to purchase their system.Other methods used are a little more subtle, but they can be just as deceiving. The report found that companies were often pressuring consumers into deals that were too good to be true."No deal is too good to pass up,” says Grant. “If the deal is good today, it's going to be good tomorrow."There are ways you can protect yourself. Grant says it's best to do your research; never sign anything on the spot. Also, avoid digital contracts that require you to sign on a phone or tab. You should ask for a copy of what you are signing."You want to shop around and see what the costs are of other companies and compare their reputations as well," suggests Grant.Checking the company’s reviews on the Better Business Bureau is a good place to start when choosing the right company.  1749

There have been 80 confirmed cases of the polio-like illness known as AFM in 25 states this year as of Friday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday.In addition, there are 139 cases under investigation for a total of 219 confirmed and suspected.This is eight more confirmed cases than the agency reported last week and 20 additional patients under investigation.The CDC noted an increase in reports of patients under investigation who began experiencing symptoms in August, September and October. It has not identified the 25 states with confirmed illnesses, nor has it said how many states are reporting cases under investigation.AFM, or acute flaccid myelitis, is a rare illness that affects the nervous system, especially the gray matter in the spinal cord, and can cause muscle weakness and sudden onset of paralysis. Last month, the CDC said that 90% of patients since 2014 have been children under the age of 4, although adults can also develop AFM.Other symptoms include drooping of the face or eyelids, difficult eye movement, trouble swallowing or slurred speech.Research is underway to determine the cause of AFM, although there is a focus on enteroviruses, which can cause respiratory illness and West Nile virus, and other viruses in that family.According to the CDC, there have been 404 confirmed cases in the United States since August 2014. The number of cases may be higher, but the condition is not subject to mandatory reporting, so not all cases are reported to state health departments and therefore may not be counted by the CDC."Even with an increase in cases since 2014, AFM remains a very rare condition. Less than one in a million people in the United States get AFM each year," the CDC says.AFM peaks every other year seasonally in late summer and fall.
